DACs?

I have a n00b question... =p

What is a DAC?  And what would I use one for?
Sounds like "Digital to Analog Converter" to me, but I really have no clue.

I've heard of DACs as seperate units in an audio system, though.  What's the use of adding one in, when a CD player already converts from the digital CD to analog speaker output?

In the audiophile world, they are supposed to have a better sound than a DAC included into a CD player or an ampli.
CD players are sold as drive+DAC, like amplis are sold as preamp+power amp.

In the professional world, I suppose that they are needed because many devices (mixers, effects) are digital, and the DA Conversion might be needed as standalone in order to monitor any of these digital sources.
