I'm not a person with great insights in firmware and so on. But I have often questioned myself this: wouldn't it be very easy to produce hardware mp3 players with upgradeable firmware or open source, so every one could easily upgrade the player with different compression formats?

Greeting to all!

Good Idea Luckyduck,
in fact, there IS a firmware-upgradeable mp3 player. it is called AVC Soul Player
it has software versions that decodes mp3,wma & aac..

Hi, Luckyduck!

Nearly the same hardware from another brand RioVolt SP100.
Newer and just a little more sophisticated RioVolt SP250.
Attention: The cheaper SP 90 is not firmware upgradeable.

Same thing as RioVolt SP250, but ultra-slim (should be delivered just in these weeks) i-river 350
