MP3 - General / Re: Resurrecting/Preserving the Helix MP3 encoder

I took the liberty of writing something regarding the -TX parameter over at https://wiki.hydrogenaud.io/index.php?title=Helix_MP3_Encoder#Magical_Mystery_Switch_-TX

Thank you, @maikmerten.

a) Wiki says that -TX6 is used by default, but -H screen is missing the word default next to TX6 and -EC screen shows ec->test1 = 0 instead of 6 when no number is specified and -1 instead of 6 when -TX is not used at all. I believe the word should be added, but what do to with the number?

b) The last TX setting (eighth in a row) has no specific number on -H screen, it just says “v5.1  2005.08.09 (see CVS log for details)”. Have you found anything interesting there?

c) When Helix is called with -TX# -EC, we see “ec->test1 = #”. It accepts 0, positive and negative integers with no validation. Since we'll probably never know the essence of the experiments of the previous team associated with this flag and the default setting (-TX6) is recommended, maybe it makes sense to put it at the bottom of -H screen within a separate section like “--- Mysterious legacy (Read wiki for details) ---” to avoid potential questions from users?

Also, I noticed that you told the user which Helix settings (-V115 -HF2 -F19000) might resemble LAME -V2. Let me clarify, which transition band does Helix use in this case? For LAME 3.99.5o and 3.101 beta 3, it is 18000 Hz - 18581 Hz.

Thank you for this component, it fits my setup perfectly and the level of customisation is incredible.
I wanted to point some things out about the artwork colour feature; I think there are a couple simple issues with it that could be improved with great results.

1) The calculator comes up with colors that don't actually exist in the artwork.

2) The calculator selects 9 colors every time, even though, per changelog, "between 2 and 256 colors can be selected".

I would suggest adding a stepped number selector to the UI ranging from 2 to 256 so one can tweak this value.

3) The colours are totally out of order in terms of brightness (which ruins the idea of an amplitude-based gradient).

4) additionally (not pictured), the artwork colours often fail to load (or have a long delay in loading), defaulting to black and white.

On this last point, as has been suggested before, it would be great to have control over those defaults; i.e in the config, under 'Styles', in the list beginning with 'Graph Background', add the options 'Fallback Gradient' and 'Fallback Dominant' or something of the sort where one might pick what colours should be used in case of no album art.

To illustrate what I mean with the points above, where the left side is the current behaviour of the artwork colour picker - I should ideally be able to restrict the number of colours to e.g 3 and get something like on the right side, correctly ordered by luminosity.

Thank you very much for your continued work on the project.

@john33 Sorry to see that you don't notice your own nagging manner, which I've been tolerating for a long time. In particular, you reproached me for sharing the test results, and another developer had to explain to you that these results were acceptable. Then you stated that I had not checked Github before commenting and there were no quality-related commits in the last build, after which I had to post a screenshot of the very commit, and the same developer had to explain that it was serious, although tested. And now that BS word as an assessment. So who is patronizing here? You are not involved in development, testing, writing documentation, or thinking about the future of the project, so why are you so nervous about someone who does? Rewind a few pages and look at the respectful interaction between me and @Case, then ask yourself why it didn't work out between us, because I did my best, starting with a list of your merits.

Do you genuinely have no idea how arrogant and patronising your manner is? It's actually quite breathtaking. You seem to think that it is OK to behave that way and at the same time insult in a quite creepy manner. Why say what needs to be said in a few words when you can take several paragraphs and spew BS along the way? "nitpicking and assertive pushbacks" you say. I found it quite offensive, to be honest.

I, for one, have had enough of you and will not again respond to any further comment that you post on this forum.

The solution is not very elegant. Close fb2k and browse your profile folder.

You can either delete the entire js_smooth_cache folder and this means all thumbnails will be generated again from scratch.

OR

Browse inside the folder and enable the extra large icons view in Explorer. Find and delete the offending files manually.

Support - (fb2k) / Different DSD sample rates for same file on 2 devices
Last post by HornetMaX -
Hi all,

I have fb2k (2.1.3 x64) running on my PC, with 2 headphone amps copnnected via USB to the PC, a FiiO K7 and an SMSL DO400, each amp has its own ASIO driver. I play a DSD64 file that has a sample rate (from file details) of 2,822,400 Hz.

When I play it to the FiiO K7, the bottom line of the fb2k window shows: DSD64 | xxxx kbps | 2822400 Hz | stereo | ....

When I play it to the DO400, the bottom line of the fb2k window shows: DSD64 | xxxx kbps | 44100 Hz | stereo | .... and, on top, de DO400 display doesn't show the DSD tag, it shows PCM.

Normally the DO400 is capable of playing DSD64 at 2.822MHz and when I play the same file from a tablet connected to the DO400 vis USB using USB Audio Player Pro, the DO400 correctly shows the DSD tag on its display.

It seems the fb2k, for some reason, is converting to PCM when outputting to the DO400 (while it works fine with the FiiO, as FiiO volume know turns green to indicate it's receiving DSD).

Anything I need to configure ?

@Markuza97 People gather for a variety of reasons: from weddings and funerals to hobby groups like reenactors and submissives. To understand why, in the 21st century, against the backdrop of so-called progress, someone builds a castle without the use of modern tools or voluntarily surrenders to the will of a dominant partner, it is more far-sighted to show the humility of an indigenous researcher and unobtrusively ask questions, rather than heating up the situation with frantic cries like “who needs these remnants of the past when the world is on the verge of exploring Mars”. The latter reveals elementary communication skills, close to those of a spoiled child, who considers his limited horizons to be certain and the incomprehensible to be ridiculous and outrageous. By regularly pouring arrogance out of the cup of consciousness, you are more likely to fill the vacated space with the idea that life is a symphony of diverse forces. In particular, what we have here is not and will not be a hierarchy with profanum vulgus (mob) that begs Prometheus (developers) to share the fire (updates), but a horizontal exchange of opinions between mature enthusiasts with different priorities, which sometimes includes nitpicking and assertive pushbacks (as in the case of me and John), but ultimately it makes Helix MP3 encoder better. Focus on that, and you will feel better as well.

Vinyl / Re: Article: Vinyl records outsell CDs for the second year running
Last post by 2tec -
Oddly enough, it's not the older crowd I see at the record stores, It's younger people and more on the fringe. We have several record stores and the busiest one, Sloth Records, caters mostly to the alternative crowd. I think there's a point in life when people are all excited about collecting the music they like. Of course, all the labels rushed to reissue their collections in vinyl too. However, it seems to me that people aren't buying much mainstream vinyl but there's a lot of vinyl being sold that's coming from smaller labels. As well, there's a very large amount of vinyl resales going on at Discogs and eBay. Used record stores are doing ok too. Vinyl seems to have become a small sustainable niche for both artists and audience.

Me, I don't care, I rip and listen to anything, I'm not fussy. ;~)
