Volterra filters?

A few papers about car stereo linearisation over at Angelino Farinas website sparked an interest in me for non-linear processing.

Especially the possibility of having the great, simplifying tools available for measuring, analyzing and processing linear systems by means of the convolution would be very interesting if extended into non-linear systems.

Is anything happening in this field?

I magine that this is low-key since the practical processing power needed makes it impractical for all but the simplest systems. But for discussion, having a completely general non-linear framework capable of modelling any complex reality seems tempting.
