Listening Tests / Re: Great killer sample, easy to ABX on most codecs
Last post by synclagz -
@shadowking, I tried the settings you suggested for WavPack, up to -b4.55x5s.5, and I still hear that hiss. Aggrrrhh! Since this sample sounds more like regular music than a proof of concept, I have a panic at the thought that other music could be compressed in such a low-quality way. So I suspend the use of the hybrid WavPack and hope that @bryant will be able to fix it.

Hi @Kraeved,

Look at my ABX tests in this thread. I've managed to ABX Wavpack up to -b576x4s0.5
If you want peace of mind with wavpack lossy, 450k range is not enough for this sample.

As @shadowking said, this sample raises suspicion on how it is recorded/mastered so it could be artificialy created.
No one knows... I would say that this sample is good to "calibrate" other lossy encoders and listen how they work on this sample but
it shouldn't be of any concern in real life music IMO.

If you want really strong setting (and peace of mind) for wavpack lossy for this sample you need something like -b550hx4s0.5.
Anything lower is ABX-able (at least for me). for faster encoding you could try -b576hhs0.8 but this high bitrate defeats purpose of economical encoding to save space.
It's up to you which way you want to go.

@Case, I already have a rough idea of the impact of Foobar2000's Hard limiter by looking at the waveform in the audio editor, but the impact of Advanced limiter is still a mystery to me, which is why I even asked the developer about it. I read a dozen threads here and realized one thing: these components clearly lack a more accessible documentation, as people continue to ask the same questions about pros and cons, suitable use cases, and comparison with ReplayGain.

BTW, since I have the version of this component, would the configuration of this component be reset if I upgrade this to the latest version (currently v0.7.2.0) as it might have breaking changes down the line since the old version of this I've have?
I took care to provide upgrade paths and conversion routines along the way. It's not pretty code but it should work.

I think you can inherit the settings and playlists by backing up the ~/Library/foobar2000 folder and also backing up the com.foobar2000.mac.plist file in ~/Library/Preferences.

I believe those projects on sourceforge have their own issue/feature request trackers. You'd have to create an account and ask there. Pretty sure the dev never posts here.

And so far, I'm pretty sure there are no 3rd party mac components. If they exist, people are doing a good job of hiding them, :P

Imagine, there is a song saved in WavPack lossy mode, 44.1 kHz 16 bit.
Its LUFS is -6.94 dB and True peak (upsampled x4 with SoX) is +2.10 dB.

To see Advanced limiter in action, I add this DSP to a conversion chain, set nothing else and choose WAV as an output format. According to my understanding of the ideas floating between threads here, I am about to get a file with True Peak of 0 dB or slightly less. But this is not happening, it stays the same. Why, @Peter?

Perhaps it is about what is considered a limit and “inter-sample peak detection” is not taken into account?
If so, is it possible to add such an option to Advanced limiter to make it even more advanced in the known universe?

Dear @xnor, your Graphic Equalizer mentioned in this post as a tool to change the volume with 0.1 dB step seems to be unavailable for the latest versions of Foobar2000 x64. There is even a dedicated thread, where sound enthusiasts ask you again and again to recompile it. Will you finally give us such a gift on the occasion of spring, which is known as the time for new beginnings? Or perhaps @Case, who has already revived many great plugins, could take up the baton?
