Serious error - moved -cfg from XP to Vista, now it doesn't play

Ok, so here's the thing: Foobar worked wonderfully in XP just a few hours ago. Columns_UI, Navigator, lots of custom scripts for everything. Then, I decided to upgrade to Vista. I made a copy of everything in the appdata folder as well as the main foobar folder. I installed Vista, installed foobar and copied the components and the appdata folder back. The problem is, now it doesn't play anything at all. Sure, it all looks exactly the same as before, but when I try to play a file, it freezes at the very beginning (the progress bar appears, but doesn't move, no sound can be heard). I can still use foobar though, so the whole application doesn't freeze. When I try to play another song, it crashes.

Does anyone have any idea of what is wrong? Sorry if this was badly worded, I'm fairly tired and just want this thing to work. Thanks a LOT in advance for any answers.

Have you select the right output device after the move?

Also make sure you have latest sound driver.

THANK YOU!!!

My God, I was about (no wait, I actually started) to take screenshots of every preference and save every tiny bit of script as .txt files to be able to rebuild the whole thing from scratch. Did you just save me a lot of work there. Thanks a lot.

(It was the output device.)

Edit: Oh snap, it only solved part of the problem. Sure, the music plays back now, but when the song changes, foobar crashes. I'll restart without windows defender and UAC, perhaps that'll help.

Edit2: Bah, it didn't. I can still hear the second song playing, and even control foobar fully behind the error message (Windows error message, not foobar), but when the song changes to a third one, I can only hear the sound, and not change anything. After that, foobar still plays back songs, but I get another error message. Does anyone know what's wrong?

Good it was solved =)

Try disable any DSP you may have enabled.
Some components may need an update, to be more Vista compatible.

P.S. You should still do that list, it's great to have a human readable backup. I've copied everything into a text file, just in case something happens.

Only problem is, it's very time consuming.

I'll try updating plugins. It wasn't any DSPs.

I have X-Fi, and it worked like a chap just hours ago in XP (same driver version).

Here's the error. Any help is, needless to say, greatly appreciated.

If you install a clean version, does it crash then too?

You can try to see if the Event Viewer has something about the crash, maybe something Peter can get something out of.

The Event Viewer says there's something wrong with foo_ui_columns.dll. I'm using the latest version. I found out I was missing libpng and zlib, and downloaded and installed them. However, the problem persists. Perhaps it has something to do with the other .dll, the comctl32.dll? I have version 6.16.6000.16386, residing in C:\Windows\winsxs\x86_microsoft.windows.common-controls_6595b64144ccf1df_6.0.6000.16386_none_5d07289e07e1d100. That doesn't sound too normal for a .dll file.

(Retiring now, back after a few hours of sleep. Thanks for all help 'till now, thanks in advance for the rest.  )

Hmm, I have 0.1.3 beta 1v7. Tried upgrading to 1v8, didn't work. Perhaps I could update the libpng.dll. Latest version 1.2.16, I have 1.2.8. Where can I get a compiled one? Can't find anywhere...

Serious error - moved -cfg from XP to Vista, now it doesn't play

I recently upgraded to vista, had a lot of similar problems, but now it seems to work fine. What I did was disable as many of the plugins as I dared, and add them back in one (or two) at a time, to find which one crashed it. Can't remember off the top of my head which one it was, but the advice I was given was start by testing all the older ones (pre mid 2006), as they're most likely to fail. Time consuming, but it worked!
If at first you don't succeed, so much for hang-gliding

Nevermind, I found the error. It was foo_uie_lyrics_panel.dll. I'm using version 0.34.1. Are there any new versions? I can't find any, only the foo_uie_lyrics...

Edit: Coincidentally, I did exactly the same as you.

Here's the console info:

Code: [Select]
[09:56:52] Launched Last.fm client.
[09:56:52] Audioscrobbler: Loaded
[09:56:52] Startup time : 0:04.473086
[09:56:53] searching $meta(SYNCED LYRICS)
[09:56:53] searching $meta(UNSYNCED LYRICS)
[09:56:53] searching $replace(%_path%,%_filename_ext%,)
[09:56:53] filename pattern: 07 - Theatre of Tragedy - Starlit.txt
[09:56:53] filename pattern: 07 - Theatre of Tragedy - Starlit.lrc
[09:56:53] filename pattern: 07 - Theatre of Tragedy - Starlit.kra
[09:56:53] D:\My Music\____-Complete Albums-____\Theatre of Tragedy\Theatre of Tragedy - 2002 - Assembly\
[09:56:53] searching %artist% - %title%
[09:56:53] OK
[09:56:56] OK
[09:56:56] searching $meta(SYNCED LYRICS)
[09:56:56] searching $meta(UNSYNCED LYRICS)
[09:56:56] searching $replace(%_path%,%_filename_ext%,)
[09:56:56] OK

The first three lines are connected to the audioscrobbler plugin. Then, the interesting thing starts. Lines 4 through 13 is added when I play the first song - everything's well so far. Then, when the song changes, only line 14 through 17 is added.

Edit: It works perfectly when I play songs that have lyrics. It's only for lyricless songs the problem exists. When the songs have lyrics, I can change song up to 3 times. The third time the song changes, foobar crashes. However, this is a different type of crash. Now, foobar exits immediately, and produces an error log. Again, all is well without foo_uie_lyrics_panel installed.

Edit2: I removed a couple of search strings, and it now works perfectly with everything that does not have lyrics. I removed the lines corresponding to lines 6-11 above (two search strings, I think). Still, most of my songs have lyrics, and this does not help me much.

Maybe it's trying to search all files?

what if you try this, it will only search .lrc files
Code: [Select]
$replace(%_path%,%_filename_ext%,*.lrc)

Currently, it only searches in
Code: [Select]
$meta(SYNCED LYRICS)
$meta(UNSYNCED LYRICS)

As said, I can play songs without lyrics perfectly well, but not the ones with lyrics - I can play some songs (2-6), and then it crashes. Sometimes, I get "Unhandled exception : bad allocation", complete with an error log (faliure_xxxxxxxx.txt), other times without an error log, and sometimes I get the error linked to above (with no error log). Again, everything works fine if I remove foo_uie_lyrics_panel.

I've tried running it as administrator and in compatibility mode for Windows XP SP2, but nothing changes.

In the event viewer, when inspecting the crashes, ntdll.dll is listed. What is this?

I had a similar problem when I used foo_tbar, the one in the notify area.

If it had lyrics in a tag it crashed, I think the tag was too big. Maybe it's same thing with this.
Try have all lyrics in .lrc files, maybe it works better.

I don't think the tag is too big, since the song it crashes when changing to one time, might work perfectly ok the next time.

Wait, perhaps it has something to do with cache? The cache builds up (it doesn't empty itself), and becomes too large? I'll se if I can check that.

No, doesn't seem like it is a connection between the size of the tags and occurence of crashes. Same goes for whether there are synced or unsynced lyrics.

Are there any versions of foo_uie_lyrics_panel newer than 0.34.1? The download is pretty hard to find...

Thanks, but that's foo_uie_lyrics. It's a totally different plugin than foo_uie_lyrics_panel, and does not have the functionality I require (mostly the easy-to-use lyrics synchonizing editor).

That would have me activate/deactivate plugins all the time. It could be done, but it's too tedious. I'd rather live with the problem, for now. However, that won't stop me from looking for other solutions!

I've done a wee bit more research on the lyrics problem now.

Things that did not help:
- turning options on and off
- stopping between tracks before changing to the next one
- removing one of the two tags it searches in ($meta(SYNCED LYRICS) and then $meta(UNSYNCED LYRICS) if it doesn't find anything in the first)
- using tag names without spaces e.g. $meta(UNSYNCEDLYRICS)

Things that helped:
- removing everything in the search box (where I specify where it's going to search for lyrics)

It's clearly connected to the plugin searching the files, then. I'm pretty clueless about what to do next.

Edit, even more research: It seems that foobar crashes when changing from a song with lyrics. I tried this by making a playlist where every other song had synced lyrics (well, actually I switched back and forth between two playlists). I did this five times, and it inevitably crashed when changing from a song with lyrics to a song without lyrics. (Though it also still crashes when changing from a song with lyrics to another song with lyrics, that apparently has got nothing to do with it.)

Delete the audioscrobbler component and try playing again. I had the same problem.
