Hi

When I access my home media server from my laptop via the internet, does foobar2000 on my home computer need to be open?

You're talking about foo_upnp, which is a plugin to foobar, right? Then your answer should be clear from my question. If not you probably run any other software to serve via UPnP over the internet, so it has to run as well.
