So, considering everything in this thread is there any reason why foobar2000 isn't listed in the secure ripping wiki article, especially considering that article's rather stern warning footnote?

First the foobar2000 paranoid log. Checking with Fooaccrip, again tracks 3 and 5 do not verify with the addition of track 7.

With this CD and with this drive, here are my additional conclusions:
1. foobar2000 paranoid is no better and sometimes is worse than standard.
2. EAC does not use C2 reliably, which is why I use T&C when using C2 or no C2 at all.

Neither ignored the error, your drive returned the same bad data twice.

Regarding the speed, you could probably change your configuration to make it go faster.

I see absolutely no basis to draw this conclusion.  Not using C2 pointers during re-reads != not using C2 pointers reliably.  If you used the word "effectively" then I wouldn't have had a problem.

EDIT: The issue with C2 pointers not being reliable is actually a drive-related problem which is capable of causing trouble for dBpoweramp as well as EAC, though with dBpoweramp it's only limited to instances where your drive fails to flag a consistent error.

The EAC rip matched the Dbpoweramp rip for all the tracks where it did not report any errors. Foobar2000 only matched 2 out of 6 tracks.

Previously with another cd, foobar2000 paranoid also failed to match both EAC and Dbpoweramp's rips.

Hopefully more people will submit their own tests. As for me, I'll be sticking with good old EAC.

Thanks for the data.  This is very interesting since dBpoweramp appears not to have a problem with two consecutive burst rips of track 19.  If you run the track again with dBpa, I assume you do get the same CRC?

EAC won't allow you to use C2 when it's configured not to rely upon your drive having the accurate stream feature, just as it won't allow you to uncheck the setting telling EAC that your drive caches.

BTW, you probably already know this but your md5 checksums are only for the "C" part of T&C.

Even though the track was marked as insecure - it is not (as it matched a previous rip when no c2 errors we flagged), the reason it is marked as insecure is there are 34 re-reads, c2 pointers indicate errors on 33 of those, and the remaining one is used, but has to be marked as insecure because the secure ripping part needs 10 matches, even from c2 (which cannot always be trusted). If this disc was in accuraterip, and it verified then the above condition would become 'secure'.

One thing to point out that is just as important as who got the rips right the most. While dbpoweramp did not get track 7 right, it still reported a warning. That's still secure for me. If the program can't get a perfect rip, I expect it to tell me. Same thing for EAC on track 5.

As for foobar2000, while it got the least number of matching rips with my 3 test cds. It was still able to report "minor problems" that turn out to be non-matching rips.

My advice to everyone is to use whichever of the 3 rippers you're comfortable with. Just keep an eye on the logs. dbpoweramp, EAC secure no C2, and foobar2000 standard will give you perfect rips if there are no warnings, suspicious positions or minor errors.

If your ripper of choice, doesn't get a rip without errors, try the other 2.

Nice work, yet again.

It seems to be that foobar2000's minor problem message is the same as EAC giving a track quality of less than 100% (not including the annoying re-reads that occasionally occur at the end of a track for seemingly no good reason).

A couple of points:

Regarding warnings, suspicious positions, etc., their absence is no guarantee that the track is free from errors.  I would refrain from suggesting that they are.  I feel very comfortable in saying that with EAC, a lack of a suspicious position is practically meaningless, especially if you have the error recovery quality set to high.

Consistency between ripping programs may be stronger than consistency with one ripping program, but it's far from a guarantee of accuracy.  Your first example definitely shows that since you get consistency with two CRCs.  For all you know, the correct rip might actually be something else.  You're better off performing a second rip with a drive that uses a significantly different chipset for comparison.

EDIT: You should really calculate a 32-bit CRC for the PCM data instead of an md5 checksum so that you can give the EAC test pass meaning.  Otherwise you should be conducting two separate rips like you are with dbpa and fb2k rather than using test and copy.

Hi everyone. I just downgraded to a netbook. For my ripping needs, I bought an external DVD burner. It's a TSSTcorp - CDDVDW SE-S224Q.

I tested it with the same CDs as before. Complete and more organized test results on the previous drive are here.

Here are the results for the new drive. Rips verified by Accuraterip are in blue. Rips with matches are in green. Rips with no matches but errors detected are in yellow. Logs are here.



I can't believe I was ripping the same CDs. EAC in all 3 modes and Dbpoweramp either had Accuraterip verification or matching MD5s with another rip.

foobar2000 had better results than before but still is inferior to EAC or dbpoweramp.

When I developing R12, I had a huge range of drives to develop with..with good drives (such as PX-230a and its ilk) there was little the ripping program could do to alter the result (note this is not detecting failed rips), but the re-try to recover an error - almost always never did, in that the drive had read as good as it could first go. Needless to say the poor drives were used most to develop with, as these would have errors and recover from errors all the time.

On a brand new CD (no scratch then) is there any reason to use EAC rather than foobar (or foobar rather than EAC  ) ?

I intend on ripping all my CDs and I would like to do it well (and just once).

(Considering I don't have a "warrior burner", it's a slimtype DVD A DS8A3S - offset +6)

Unless you want HTOA (if our drive can extract it), or any non-audio information (non-01 index locations, UPC/ISRC, CD-TEXT or pre-emphasis), then the answer is no.

You cannot trust a scratchless CD to be perfect. I have ripped a few thousand CDs and there are lots of brand new discs with various errors in the pressing. I would make the guess that some instances of a "1" or "0" showing up as a physical ".5" could maybe be better read with one ripper than another. However, AccurateRip results may as well be just a "majority vote" for a particular ripping software.

Also, as greynol hints: you might encounter one of these pesky CDs with pre-emphasis. They must be processed in order to sound right, and in the very least you want them flagged.

This is only just one part of the equation.  If that were all it was then I wouldn't trust it for the life of me.  Thankfully AccurateRip isn't anywhere near as simple as you're characterizing it.

I did a test rip of a known problem CD in foobar2000, EAC and dBpoweramp (v13.5) to see how the programs compared. These are the settings I used:


EAC & dBpoweramp

Burst Mode/Test & Copy & Secure Mode (unlimited speed)


foobar2000

Standard & Paranoid Mode (unlimited speed)


The results? In all programs, the non-secure modes clearly showed tracks on the CD that were okay & with problems. But while EAC and dBpoweramp were able to correct the errors and produce perfect rips of those tracks in their secure modes on the first try, foobar2000 couldn't even come close, even after re-recording the problem tracks over & over again numerous times. So while foobar2000 is pretty good at everything else, I don't think they're even in the same room that EAC and dBpoweramp are in when it comes to ripping tracks off of a CD. I couldn't recommend it to anybody as a secure ripper.
