Title: Windows 7 Beta and Foobar2000
Post by: front243 on 2009-01-13 07:09:16
Wondering if anybody else is testing out Windows 7.

Foobar seems to work except for one thing. The right click context menu is often missing in explorer and I am not sure what is causing this.

Has anybody found a solution to that problem?

One tester here.

No such problems here at all, installed my foobar as a standard installation. did have some tough time installing because of the restriction for the file and folder usage (used only XP before where everything is allowed always for everyone from the beginning )

I noticed that sometimes the windows 7 itself messes the context menu on other programs, happened twice (but the programs affected are officially only for XP, not even for Vista)

Only problems I've encountered so with the Windows 7 beta 1 is that online armor's firewall crashed the system and punkbuster which informs me about some unknown windows api.

From arstechnica.com:

"While windows 7 doesn't undo these architectural changes—they were essential for the long-term health of the platform—it equally hasn't made any more. Any hardware or software that works with Windows Vista should also work correctly with Windows 7, so unlike the transition from XP to Vista, the transition from Vista to 7 won't show any regressions; nothing that used to work will stop working."

foobar is running beautifully on windows 7 x64.

Now all that left is customized jump list and put cover art/ vis / playback control in thumbnail like how windows media player did, and then it would be perfect

foobar works like a charm with Windows 7 Beta. I´m using ASIO, this still works, DS works also, WASAPI doesn´t (don´t know why, but neither did Kernel Streaming under WinXP) with E-MU 0202 USB. I think I fell in love with Windows 7, has anyone noticed how fast it is? It´s even faster than my WinXP (which is kept in a finely tuned status by me).

I will by this immediately when it will be official.

I don't want to install a beta OS over my Server 2008 x64, which makes Vista Ultimate x64 look like a steaming pile of turd in comparison.  (I still await user reports that Windows 7 actually improves Server 2008 performance... though most likely, "Windows 7 Server" aka Server 2008 R2 will be better).  However, regarding explorer/menu issues, there is an issue with foobar2000 and Vista/kernal 6.0 OS's that has persisted to this day.

If I open a properties dialog box, or allow the track box to open up after foobar finishes converting files, sometimes the Exit buttons on those windows will be completely useless; they will click in but won't exit until you do some funky changing focus by switching through Windows Explorer or changing focus within foobar itself.  It also affects the Lyrics Show Panel for columns_ui in that sometimes the Search button does nothing until you change focus by typing new text or whatnot.  This never happened in XP with the same components installed.

duno, but they refuse to load (in win7 x64)

foo_burninate
foo_dsp_vlevel
foo_dsp_xover
foo_input_alac
foo_input_dts
foo_input_tta
foo_msnalt
foo_winamp_spam

That said, i'm using this alongside my winXP sp3 machine, so it might be that these also don't work under Vista and I just never knew it before.

foo_burninate
foo_input_alac

Redownload from the official download site (http://foobar2000.org/?page=Download). As these components aren't bundled with the player, they won't be updated as you download newer versions.

foo_input_tta
foo_msnalt

Download updates for these here (http://www.saunalahti.fi/~cse/foobar2000/).

foo_input_dts

And this one here (http://kode54.foobar2000.org/).

I found these plugins to be incompatible:

foo_dsp_src9.dll
foo_g15lcd.dll
foo_input_tak.dll
foo_vis_channelusage.dll

Also, when I used foo_scheduler to shut down my computer, it blue screened, and when I start a visualization with foo_vis_shpeck, I'm informed that the "Plugin DLL could not be loaded".

I've had a couple other random glitches, but nothing really significant.

Edit: I'm using the x64 version.

foo_dsp_src9.dll

I think it's unlikely that the author (Erik de Castro Lopo) will update it.

foo_input_tak.dll

Really? Latest version is foo_input_tak-0.4.2-20080408, and it should work.

Yeah. Not unless we pay him.

I believe that's the version I'm using. I copied the dll from my month XP partition, so it was working fine before, and the date on the file is 4/8/2008. Anyway, foobar gives me this message:
Code: [Select]
Failed to load DLL: foo_input_tak.dll
Reason: This component is missing a required dependency, or was made for different version of foobar2000.

The imperative part is "missing a required dependency" here. It needs an additional DLL with the decoder itself from TAK distribution. (At least so I think after reading this post (http://www.hydrogenaudio.org/forums/index.php?s=&showtopic=68454&view=findpost&p=608743) the other day.)

Exactly, put tak_deco_lib.dll in foobar2000 folder.

Also put tak.ico to icons folder.  And, since TAK 1.1.0 was released recently, it's better to use tak_deco_lib.dll from this archive: http://www.hydrogenaudio.org/forums/index....st&p=607828 (http://www.hydrogenaudio.org/forums/index.php?s=&showtopic=68456&view=findpost&p=607828)

I actually have some strange bug in Windows 7. My album art panel and dynamic info in track_info_mod don't update until you do something like save settings or try to resize the panel.

For example, when song starts track info says "0:00 / 6:41" and it stays that way until I do something. And when foobar starts, nothing shows on these 2 panels. Still, if you do something, they miraculously appear.

Quite weird...

I haven't had any problems, other than global hotkeys not working when the focus is in a privileged application, but I think that comes from Vista. Running foo with privileges stops the problem, as most Vista users are probably aware.

There seemed to be lots of artifacts when using DS output for me, related to CPU usage it seems. WASAPI doesn't work here either, but I'm using KS without any problems.

OMG so i was right about this... is there any way this can be fixed foobar-side or is it purely OS-side?

I have UAC turned off in vista but i left it on in win7 so I was not sure the global hotkey problem comes from UAC... everything else works perfectly fine so far, but i'm not using many plugins anyway

I too would love the  usage of Jump Lists for playlists, along with other thigns i've thaught about trying to add to my own applications. You may have noticed that progress bar information is also displayed on the superbar, this could be used to display current track progress. You can also overlay icons ontop of the program icon (seen in WLM to display current status) that could be used to show the current playback status. I don't think there's a managed API yet, but there is alot of information here:

http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/dd378460(VS.85).aspx (http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/dd378460(VS.85).aspx)

I'm a C# coder myself, and I'm assuming that is aimed at people using C++ only, so i'm at a loss as to how to implement any of it. I've tried the usual p/invoke methods, but I keep getting errors thrown stating that the method was not found... I'm sure someone out there would be able to make a simple plugin that would make best use of these features though, without too much effort. I'd glady help where possible, but as iv'e stated, i'm a C# programmer...

The only issue I've had is a rendering issue with the album/artist lists for Facets. Sometimes when scrolling, items overlap each other. Doing a select all on the list or minimizing and restoring the window will usually fix it. This bug seems to appear after moving/resizing or, especially, docking the window.

I've found soemthing which may just make greater Windows 7 intergration a reality for Foobar. I've spent alot of time looking for this, and i've finally found it here:

http://www.neowin.net/forum/index.php?show...amp;p=590434472 (http://www.neowin.net/forum/index.php?showtopic=716968&view=findpost&p=590434472)

It's basically a .NET compatable dll which simply needs to be referenced to unlock it's capabilities. I know that Foobar is not written in .NET, but i'm sure the dll can sill be quite simply used to great effect.

I've messed with it in a new C# project and it's a sinch to intergrate and use. I hope that someone in the Foobabar development team will make a small plugin which could add some additional finctionality, even if it's simply changing the colour of the taskbar entry (by setting the progress value to 100%) to represent playback state or similar.

Hope this proves useful to someone...

Ideally, you should wait for it to be officially added, but simply put ITaskbarList3 is a COM interface exposed by Explorer.

Sounds like a COM interface to me, which has nothing to do with .NET. The post in question just seems to explain how to use it from .NET.

I dunno if you read the entire post, I didn't notice it first time, but there's a download at the bottom of it with a dll in it which you can reference, yes, much like a com interface. It's methods include all of those in the interface depicted in the last post I made...

I have made a very small c# application with a slider and some buttons which allows you to test the taskbar progress thingy, in it's various modes (normal, paused, error, off, indeterminate). If it's remotely useful, either decompile it, or i'll dump the source on my server for you...

http://downloads.brins0.net/Windows7Test.7z (http://downloads.brins0.net/Windows7Test.7z)

I'm not sure exactly how Foobar is written, not beeing in the language I know, I can't investigate and make some plugins myself. But if I can work out how to use the DLL in a couple of minutes, then i'm sure the dev team here with their vast knowledge of Foobar's internal structure will have no problems making a snap-in for it.

Yeah I discovered the same thing in Windows 7.  The context menu works okay when I select 15 or less files (e.g. mp3's).  If more than 15 files are selected then the options to Play in foobar etc. don't appear in the context menu as they should.  I'm using foobar v0.9.5.3

What did the update fix?  I'm using the latest version of Foobar and I still have the problem.

If I select too many FLAC files (> 15) I still don't get the option to play in Foobar at all, yet I have Foobar set as the default player Win7 as well as the Foobar Preferences set to open FLAC files with Foobar.

Also, If I right click even one MP3 file in Windows Explorer I still do not get the context menu at all.  All off the default settings are the same as FLAC.

Windows Vista and 7 require shell extension when dealing with more than 15 files at once in Explorer. New foobar2000 has shell extension but you won't get it unless you run the installer in standard mode.

The same "problem" exists in Vista, which is not Beta, I believe
I was unable to open 16+ .html files into Firefox all at once, by selecting them all in Explorer and hitting Return.

In case you're wondering why the heck I needed to open more than 16 files at once: I was working on a client's website's HTML/CSS, and needed to do a full checkup on all of them, and this would have been the swiftest way. For many other applications, however, simultaneous opening of a fair number of files is a common use case, so I have no idea why this strange and tiny limit is suddenly imposed.

There's not much more to explain. Microsoft changed Windows to hide old style context menus when too many files are selected. This issue was fixed in foobar2000 v0.9.6 beta 1 as the installer now registers shell extension that handles opening files from Explorer.

If you just copied foobar folder from old installation or installed it in "Portable mode" you do not have working context menus (with Portable mode you would have had to manually associate file types).

To fix file opening in Windows 7 just run the installer. After license page make sure to select "Standard installation" and finish the wizard normally. If files weren't associated properly you will need to go to foobar's Preferences and re-associate everything with 'File Types' -> 'Open "Set Program Associations: foobar2000" control panel'.

Just did a fresh install of foobar (v0.9.6.4) and nothings changed.  The problem still exists.

FLAC lists of over 15 songs have no context menus (http://i42.tinypic.com/eg6dqo.jpg).

MP3 songs have no enqueue option (http://i43.tinypic.com/34dlhec.jpg).

I've verified in Windows that the default player for both is foobar, and I've set the same in foobars preferences > file types.

I see from your screenshots that FLAC association is made by clicking a flac file in Explorer and selecting foobar from "Open With" menu. That is not the correct way. I don't know how mp3 association is made but it definitely doesn't come from shell extension.
This is the screen where you set file handling in Windows Vista and Windows 7:

For the most part, they are have their own dedicated thread. Very easy to find.
There are many samples of skins using CUI in it's own dedicated thread.

FFS, what are you going on about?

Alternatively, I have found a solution.  When highlighting more than 15 tracks, you can either drag them onto the player or hit the 'Open' button near the top of the window.

LordWarlock, thanks for the link but something integrated within foobar; not by a 3rd party plugin

Yeah, and we desperately need native x64 binary. (sarcasm)

No (desperate) need for native implementation unless everyone out there uses windows 7 and/or developer abandons the plugin.

x64 will always be welcome in the future.
Also, when I say implement something by default, it does not mean to kill the 3rd party app.  We can still integrate it with a basic jump list.  As far as I know, the 3rd party plugin can easily change buttons, show album art and stuff but the one that could be implemented should be basic and if people prefer the other, then can switch between foobar's and 3rd party's.

One thing that I think would be neat for fb2k in Windows 7: Certain programs like ImgBurn and a download window in IE8 show a progress bar directly in the taskbar via a green overlay, it'd be cool to implement that to show how far along in the song you are.

No, that's just adding random clutter to the taskbar. Completely unnecessary IMO.

Did anyone managed to use 'Album Art Downloader' via Run Services on Windows 7? (and more specifically x64).
I cannot seem to make it work (although it does work, even with parameters, when I run it from CMD).
Any idea?

I had a problem with this too, and in my case it was so simple that I searched for hours to find the cause. I just had "C:\Program Files\[...]" in the path and in Windows 7 it's "C:\Program Files (x86)\[...]".

Something like this (http://wintense.com/plugins/foo_w7shell)?

This functionality has to be implemented at the core level. But this component will have make do until that happens.

The above component does show a progress bar but not in the same fashion as Windows Media Player. You have to hover over the taskbar button to see it.

Also foobar2000 has to synchronize with the mixer. This is something that definitely has to be implemented at the core level.

seem to have fixed my issues in windows 7 with files not loading after ya either click on them / right click them by running the foobar2000 Shell Associations Updater in the foobar directory

had drag n drop isssues under win7 as well but those seem to be related to me trying to run the program as administrator rather than as a regular user.

I running .9.5.1 on Windows 7 RC and none of the open file dialog boxes will open.  For example going to File>Open the dialog never appears.  Everything else seems to be working.  Any ideas how to fix this.  It worked fine in Vista SP2

Try 0.9.6.9.

OK, I tried .9.6.9 and I still can't open any open file dialogs.  For instance File>Open and nothing happens.  No other apps I run have this problem.  Any ideas?

OK, I got .9.5.1 running again by going thru the compatibility wizard.  I have no idea what it actually did, but it's now running fine in "Vista SP1 compatibility mode".  Still curious why .9.6.9 didn't work either for me though since that's supposed to be supported for Windows 7.

I also have the problem that "Play in foobar2000" and "Enqueue in foobar2000" is sometimes shown and sometimes not.
It is always NOT shown, when the option to playback the folder in Media Player is shown.
Is there a trick to make Windows show the foobar2000 options also on these folders?

Ah yes, I'm running Windows 7 RC and foobar2000 0.9.6.9.

Best regards,
Chris

That would completely piss me off.

However, it would be nice in places where it's actually relevant - i.e. scanning/applying replaygain, performing foo_fileops stuff, etc

I agree with kopf. the w7_shell component has an option to use exactly this feature and it's annoying as hell.
Showing replayGain progress/conversion would definitely be nice.

Btw, no problems with foobar 0.9.6.9  on win7 x64 RTM so far. No crashes, no weirdness.
UAC is disabled now, but there were no critical issues with it on either, except the "cannot access global keys from elevated programs" (e.g. games) one, but that's not a win7 specific problem

I agree, rg and/or converter progress would be more interesting here. After a couple of weeks with Win7 Professional the new task bar features (the hovering over things) turned out to be not very useful for me. I simply do not use them. It's maybe a question of habits and workflow. I tend to press alt+tab to switch tasks, and need no preview.
