Ogg Vorbis for my Audi A4

Hi folks,
I have an Audi A4 which has the ability to play MP3, AAC and WMA files via an SD card. Being a fan of open source software, I'd love to be able to play Ogg Vorbis files via the SD card.

Does anyone know if it is possible to upgrade the Audi multimedia software to enable Ogg Vorbis playback? I asked my local Audi dealer and they had no idea.

This question may belong on a car forum but since it is specific to audio codecs I thought I'd ask the question here.

Has anyone had any success enabling or adding the Ogg Vorbis codec on their car multimedia system?

Thanks.

Someone in this Audi-oriented community's unrelated thread posted, back in 2009, something along the lines "I wish it played ogg and FLAC".
So I guess nothing's changed in that department ever since.

The most practical (or least impractical) method is probably to use an external device through an aux input or bluetooth, if it has that.

Or else, assuming you have the same audio available in any lossless format, convert it to MP3 or AAC instead.

Just avoid transcoding from lossy to lossy as the plague, since in practical terms, well-encoded lossy files (and in such mature formats) are, come to think of it, just horses for courses.

Thanks folks.

I have all my music archived as FLAC, so it is no hassle to convert to MP3 or AAC. I was just hoping to break away from proprietary tracks (I use Vorbis for my Sansa clip and Samsung A3 phone). I'll probably go with LAME MP3. From an audio quality point of view, the actual codec does not matter too much as a car is a relatively noisy environment.

It is a real pity car manufacturers in recent years have not enabled open source codecs on their systems, especially where SD cards are used. It would be nice to have the choice of open source codecs and it would not cost the car manufacturer anything. From searching on Google I sense this is changing for various manufacturers though as FLAC and Vorbis slowly but surely become more widely known.

Djme.

@djme

I think I heard Audi A8 had Ogg Vorbis support. So, you might consider upgrading.

At this point wouldn't it be more appropriate to go to opus (or both)?
