Title: Sound Forge and WAVES questions...
Post by: 5point1 on 2006-09-09 17:31:07
Quick question regarding Sound Forge and their "RMS Normalizing" function.

First, how are you supposed to know how the Compressor/Limiter is working or what it's setting are?  If you choose the "Apply Dynamic Compression" from the drop down menu for how to deal with any samples that go above 0 db, how is the Compressor working?  There's no option, no Attack Time, no Release Time, no nothing.  The manual just says that it will "apply a time varrying compressor" etc.  What does this mean?

Secondly, if you want to RMS Normalize to -6dB's, and the current average is, for example, -13.8dB's using the "Equal Loudness Contour", is Sound Forge simply just amplifying everything by 7.8dB's and then Limiting everything to 0dB's?

Because I figure it is best to use Sound Forge to find the current RMS Average with "Equal Loudness" but then just use the WAVES L2 to Compress/Limit it to -6dB's (or whatever).

I just wish Sound Forge would actually explain EXACTLY what is happening once you click "OK" rather than just saying a compressor/limiter is used for peaks that go beyond 0dB!

hi 5point1,
i can turn it worse ....lol,but it's true.
with sound forge after you hit scan give "x" average rms and the same sources in audition(wave group normalize) after hit scan give "y" average rms.

what is right,"x" or "y"?

i'm sure that,lol...i really don't know comparing the results from this programs..

i can host pictures from the programs if you want to see details or i can do tests for you.
