Help - itunes 6 sound is crap!

Hi,

Wondering if anyone knows of this, or can suggest a fix:

I just upgraded to itunes 6 (having previously had no problems with itunes whatsoever) and the sound is horrible. There is a definite crackling and hiss over the top of the tune that is playing. I went to itunes troubleshooting, and their suggestion (to change to wavout) is -- I think -- for itunes 5. Because this is a default setting in the newest version of quicktime. But it doesn't matter whether I have it in safe mode or not, itunes still sounds shite. I've tried googling the problem, but no joy.

Anyone have any suggestions?
