transparent album art?

Is this possible?

I use overlays with my album art, but I have to display the album art using the $image function for those overlays to be visible over the album art. It would be nice to just use the album art panel that can be set transparent instead of just manually displaying the images of the cover art, but i don't think this is possible with the latest version of the album art component.
