Listening Tests / Re: Personal test – MP3 vs AAC (high rates, VBR)
Last post by Kamedo2 -
I combined the result with the IgorC's past result.

In the results below, the xHE-AAC encoder, exhale, have undergone many improvements and updates since then.
The other codecs, LAME, Apple, Vorbis, Musepack, and Opus are the latest as of 2021 September.
As expected of modern codecs at 192kbps and higher, all of them offer very high fidelity.

CUETools / Re: CUETools DB
Last post by Atsix26 -
It might have been easier to show the differences had you provided the TOCIDs. I'll try a different approach.

http://cue.tools/wiki/CUETools_Database#What_information_does_the_database_contain_per_each_CD.3F
Quote
What information does the database contain per each CD?
CD TOC (Table Of Contents), i.e. length of every track (TOCID). Disc pregap length (HTOA) and/or CD-extra data track length stored separately (if any).
The TOCID is created from the length of each track. Some Titles are manufactured in multiple plants and sometimes under more than one label. The start position of one or more tracks may differ slightly at each plant (Engineer's discretion). A difference by one CD sector will change the TOCID.
As an example I chose Led Zeppelin - Led Zeppelin
MusicBrainz has 18 Disc IDs associated with the 1987 US release
https://musicbrainz.org/release/6166b18d-6055-38e0-886f-b265dd1a980f/discids
That's 18 unique CD TOCs so up to[1]18 unique TOCIDs.

I see, thank you!

Sorry about the TOCIDs, here they are:
- My CD: BPZ_LgmAPqowNhisVg0KJYgCmlQ-
- My friend's CD: UPWcIVmMJ5H5tycwKLGJxFhS58E-

It's the first disc of a 3 disc compilation by Sam Cooke (the other two discs also have different TOCIDs when comparing my friend's CD with mine). I've looked on the CTDB site, and it seems that most of the tracks on my CD are longer than those on my friend's CD - especially the last track, which is seven seconds longer. I've also noticed that my CD has a pregap of 00:00:01, while my friend's CD has no pregap.

Is that common with albums that were manufactured in different plants?
Track 01 pregap (HTOA) and CD-extra data track lengths are stored elsewhere so it is possible to have more than one CD TOC per TOCID

Thanks, you should try right clicking in the library > Show album art. When album art is active right click again and try Change layout to full width.
Also if you have added your biography path ( see update post ) in File > Preferences > Display > Album art and the biography has automatically downloaded
artist images ( if you click on biography ) you can try again right click > Show artists.
Also try the flow mode in Options > Library > Design > Flow mode. There you can also switch fast to artists.

The library is really complex and feature rich, just saying, everybody should carefully read the instructions in the update post to get the full experience and try out the options
in top menu Options > Library =).

Cheers

FLAC / Re: New FLAC compression improvement
Last post by Porcus -
It seems that adding another "-e" still slows it down, so apparently some combinations force the encoder to do the same work twice.

Anyway, I will be putting the build at some overnight work out of curiosity, but avoid the -p and -e.

Question: Does irlspost-p(N) correspond to ffmpeg's lpc_order N in terms of passes, or to N-1 or to N+1 or justforgeteverythingaboutcomparing?

Edit: Oh, and on the Rice: The Open Goldberg Variations album would frequently end up in same files at a number of different -r settings.

@IgorC
This test (and your other multicodec test at 192k) finally shows how much bitrate is needed to achieve very high quality at reasonable bitrate. Excellent work!

Are you familiar with this sample:
https://hydrogenaud.io/index.php?topic=120193.0

Do you think we have to worry about this sample and similar ones for 192-256k which is otherwise more than enough for quality listening which your tests confirm?

Sorry guys,

what a bad start  ::) , I totally forgot to update the config files, thus old SMP properties values were still present,
this also caused to not have the proper biography design. All should be good now. Please download again the master zip HERE.
Old link in the update is the same as this one!

Thank you for the prompt reporting!

IgorC,

Great test! The Apple AAC seems to be a very stable codec at high rates.
:)
Yes, Apple AAC@192kbps crashes everything that MP3 can offer at ~260-320 kbps.

That's +64-128kbps bitrate difference.

Interesting that V0 seems somewhat safer than the CBR320k.
CBR320k has smaller amount of short frames. This explains why it performs worse on transient signals.

A bit different visualization.
Much better.  :)  I was sleepy yesterday and wanted to finish it.

Further more, Mp3 is still competitive @ 192k (V2). People that
don't want other formats can be happy using mp3 at 160.. 224k, and
up to 256..320k
Yes, I will not hesitate to listen to V0. Though Apple AAC still provides a great bitrate reduction and actually handles critical samples better.

FLAC / Re: New FLAC compression improvement

Are there any known decoding problems going above -r 6?
Not that I know of. ffmpeg and CUEtools.Flake use it in some presets by default. For most music it is not worth the trade-off, but for chiptune (Game Boy emulation) I've seen gains of 3 - 4%. There, the high partition order actually switches on low-frequency square wave transitions.

I think the default -9 setting is well chosen. -p is simply to slow for its minimal gains.
Yes, with the irlspost-p I tried to get the gains I saw with using -p but for minimal speed loss. As the irlspost stuff takes the best predictor from the tukey windows and does a few iterations on them, the result from the irls process usually gives the smallest frame.

From the small difference between -9 and -9p you can see that these iterations sometimes give results worse instead of better (because a improvement between -9 and -9p implies that this is from the regular tukey apodizations, and thus that the IRLS process did not improve upon them), it also shows that the process usually works very well.

@Peter, another small question: is it possible to add component in run-time? At least for the purpose of updates and stuff in the components settings section.

Scenario: a C++ component is used as a host/loader/proxy for .NET components (I doubt there will be more than one though xD). Everything SDK related (callback registration and etc) is handled by the host C++ component. But I want users to be able to interact just as usual even with said .NET components (check for updates/add/delete and etc).
