Title: MP3 re-encode question
Post by: KlAudio on 2009-05-15 15:16:44
Hi,

I have encoded several albums with LAME 3.98.2 -V 2 but I have now switched over to -V 3.

I was wondering, if I'd have a WAVE file that I encoded with -V 3, would it be the (exactly) same result as if I'd re-encode a V2-mp3 to V3.
I know this doesn't work if I use different encoders but I'm talking about the same encoder.

I'm not sure how LAME exactly works, so maybe somebody could give me some insight.
This would be much appreciated, btw.

Cheers!

The two are not equivalent. Regardless of the encoder, lossy-to-lossy reencoding results in a loss in quality.

Okay, thanks. That's what I thought/feared.
