Title: Losing CDDB info when converting to mp3
Post by: banger on 2003-07-13 14:50:25
Ok, I ripped all of my CD's using EAC. Whan I ripped I used
the CDDB option so that all of the albums song titles
where automatically labeled during the ripping process.
This is very easy. Now I have everything converted to
Wav's with the correct filenames for the songs....artist;album;
track#;etc.

Now I am compressing the wav files to mp3. The problem is
that the CDDB info is not making it to the mp3 tag information.

In other words, I can compress, but get no mp3 tags!

If I rip and compress at the same time, then I get the mp3 tags
on the resulting compressed mp3.

Is there a utility that will take the CDDB info from the wav files
and port this info to the mp3 files that I created from the previously ripped wav's? Or one that will get the CDDB info
while it runs the compression and create the mp3 tags during
compression??

Thanks.

You can try Tagger (http://www.tagger.boereck.de/tagger_2.0beta.exe). It's a frontend for a commandline application called Tag (http://www.saunalahti.fi/cse/files/Tag.zip) and together these can get the CDDB info after the files are encoded and tag your mp3s after that.

Other programs that can do the same are Tag & Rename (http://www.softpointer.com/tr.htm) and The GodFather (http://users.otenet.gr/~jtcliper/tgf/).

WAV-files does not support tags. It's that easy.
Rip directly to the desired format instead.

If you create your MP3 files from wav files, you'll have to use an MP3 tagger, such as Tag & Rename or Case's Tag or others. They'll do the thing with no problem.

If you use foobar2000: another possibility would be to put all the tag informations you want to keep on the wav files' names, i.e. name you wav files like that: "artist - tracknumber - album - title ... . wav". After conversion you'll have such mp3 files:"artist - tracknumber - album - title ... . mp3". Then use the masstagger and "guess values from filename". Additionaly you can rename your mp3 files after that.

Yeah I was afraid that the wav's did not support the CDDB info.

I will try the Tagger program after I use lame to encode all of the files.

Thanks for the fast reply's!!

For what it's worth, I think you can add tags to a wav file, at least id3v1 tags. I wasn't aware of this until my mp3 player added support for it. I've certainly never come across a tagged wav to my knowledge.
