Beta 3 vs. Beta 4 sonically

Going from 1.3.12 Beta 3 to Beta 4 presented a completely unexpected result: Beta 4 is noticeably inferior sonically to Beta 3. The latter is far more transparent, livelier and "lighter" in the best of senses. Beta 4 is "thicker," a little darker and also (or so it seems) a little softer, which I adjusted for to be sure. It was immediately obvious, and I went back and forth a few times just to make sure.
