Obviously if you're here, you care about the quality of audio and music you are listening to - therefore you have a passion for it.

I was just interested in finding out who here actually writes or performs their own music? It'd be interesting to find out if we have any musicians or vocalists among us.

hm...actually I lied....
I remember now. I actually have been recorded.....playing some drums and a gongon in a piano concert.

Anyway, I play the piano and I can/have been writting arrangements for orchestra.
I don't much anymore though and I'm not really good at it but can set up something.

I used to go to this boarding school (i belive it's called - danish:efterskole) some years ago, and I started playing drums and guitars there. It really caught my interest. I still practice guitar, but my current situation have prevented my from doing any serious drumming/guitar playing. I will be doing some playing in the future though, once I get the oppertunity, because I love music and love playing it too.

I'd like to be a 1337 jazz drummer .

Although I'm not sure if the "music" label will fit. Also be warned that this is about three years old, and that audiophiles will shun the recording method and quality (and probably the music ) I'm moving back to Norway in a month though, so I'll definitely hook up with the other half of the band again to make some new tracks...

Yes, I play guitar, drums and recently started playing around with Propellerheads Reason. Mostly scandinavian metal. I played guitar in a band before we got split up, few recordings worth. I've written quite a few songs, metal and others.

BTW, there's quite nothing like standing in front of double 4x12" speaker cabinets while playing something gruesomely heavy. My liver & other organs just love it .

Drums mostly here. I was surprised to see many drummers above (that is a good thing!) I also play a lot of guitar and still deal with my starting instrument, piano.

Recording started with SB Pro, Casio SK-1 and MODEdit, mostly bad songs and crappy quality. Nowadays I record a lot of songs and they're all good. :-) I'm active with other musicians but still privately write lyrics and record each instrument myself. On that note, I'm looking at another solo project with composing and recording video game scores.

No real drums here.  I play mainly saxophone, although I get asked by a lot of local bands to help get a certian effect digitally... or write rhythms...  I've even made a few nifty ones that were used. =)  To be as modest as possible though, I really tear it up on the sax.

I used to play bass, keyboards, and a little bit of singing in an amateur pop group a few years ago. We recorded several of our songs with a cheap 4-track cassette recorder, but they sounded quite well, I think. I passed them to cd a couple of years ago.

I think I started playing music when I was 8 with a one channel Casio keyboard, which was awful, doing weird bizarre harmonies and stuff along with other music. When I was 11, I started learning drums, but couldnt afford the lessons after grade 1. From then on I did most playing without tuition.

My main bulk of music was done with Fast Tracker 2 (XM/MOD files), doing mainly dance + hardcore tracks.. now I use Fruity Loops but I've been told by a professional musician that it takes an incredible amount of effort to post produce tracker music, so soon when I get a nice MIDI keyboard I'll move onto CuBase or Logic.

Hehe - no I'm not Groovy Carrot. Not by a long way! I'm still waiting for OcUK to authorise my forum account with them. I've seen the buy/sell forums - they are interesting, seeing as I've got far too much old kit lying around, and am desperate to have a silent but blazing fast PC.

My name is pronounced "Rory", but spelt in Irish because I was born there. My mother thought it'd be all cool and unique when really its a pain because everyone forgets how to spell it, let alone pronounce it. At school it was always "Claire?", "Here Sir!", "Mark?", "Here Sir", "erm...rrRrru ... RRrooaaa", "It's Rory sir and yes I'm here...!". Even worse my surname is Fullam which is traditionally spelt Fulham so even more so there is a margin for error. So hence now I am rc55.

Christ, I'm boring arent I? Well, its just 9am and I've fallen into work. Arrrhghrrgh...

P.S. Lets get back on topic! =)

Good idea for a poll

I create my own music, all on PC as I don't really have much talent with real world instruments

I use as many programs as I can (cool edit multitracking, fruityloops, tuareg) so that I don't fall into the niche of making the type of sound each program gears you towards making!

I've got nearly 25 tracks pretty much finished now, which would be a mash up of Boards of Canada & Squarepusher.  I'm gonna send a demo cd to the Warp label and cross my fingers

If anyone wants my first album, it's £5

I sing tenor in a local university choir.  I'm too old to be a university student, but this particular choir is open to members of the community like myself.  We sing a cappella sacred and liturgical music (it's a Catholic university, although I'm not Catholic).  We are currently working on the following pieces, among others:

Laudate Dominum - Mozart.
Ave Maria - Rachmaninoff.
My Soul Doth Magnify The Lord (Magnificat) - John Rutter.

I started playing the guitar and drums at the age of 4, and by the age of 10 keyboards, violin, and singing lessons. I started giving guitar lessons when I turned 18 at a local guitar shop and drum shop.

Now at age 31 I have 27 years of music experience and have recorded (un-professionally) 7 albums, 5 were with various local Death Metal, and Black Metal bands in my area, and 2 were solo efforts - one Death Metal recording, and one Black Metal recording. I have to consider myself more of a studio artist - hence the controlled atmosphere, although playing live from time to time is alright.

I also used the "wide" interpretation of recorded.  My music is recorded mostly on an old Teac 2340 in my house.  I have a couple songs that I've sent to friends or family, but thats about it.

My band:
guitar:  Me on an older Peavey Predator.
Bass: Amiga 500, (occasionally me also, on a cheap no-name bass.)
Drums:  Boss DR-550 drum machine, kept in sync by the Amiga.

My Teac limits me to 4 tracks, which is probably a good thing!

Its all just for fun.  In fact, I was thinking of calling my first album:
All Three Chords

I play guitar in a few bands now.  I play in two Big Bands and one Wedding/Pub Rock/Everything Band.  The Big Bands play a variety of styles, from Ellignton classics to modern stuff by people like James Morrisson and Maynard Ferguson.  I have recorded a cd with one of the Big Bands, and am going to record another starting July 20.

Give me an old comb and a piece of wax paper and I can really go to town. Plus my sife says I'm the best darn whistler she's ever heard.

Struth through, I do write a fair number of pieces that become songs, whether they started that way or not. In "real life" I am a writer - among other things - so given my own eclectic musical taste it would be more surprising if I failed to turn some of those efforts into songs!

I've been composing music for a long time, but I still have never gotten into PC software and actually produced anything yet.

Mainly because the programs I've tried (Logic and Cubase) have not given me the flexibility I'm used to.

I used to use tracker software, which lets you just type in the notes in real time, which lets you take the music directly from your head and get it into the software without any need for planning. I haven't found any "professional" software that lets you do that so far.

Played bass on three bands: one cover band when I was in high school, a "cumbia" band for weddings and parties and a punk outfit in my early days in college.

I am not that good, but I love to sing (and my friends say that my voice is not entirely unpleasant  )

Yes. Every day.

Former professional guitarist - 12 years on the road as a sideman in rock, blues, country, R&B, bluegrass and folk ensembles. At the risk of seeming a braggart, I am an expert lead guitarist in several pop styles. I have been on many recordings and produced recordings for others. I also do a lot of singing, lead and harmony.

I do not compose much myself, and prefer the role of interpreter. This is helpful as a sideman.

I have actually never used any computer based music creation tools - I am not interested in electronic music per se. I do use notation and recording tools (TablEdit, Goldwave, etc.) but do most home recording on a stand alone HD recorder because it is easy and portable.

I also play some other instruments, though none as well as the guitar:
Mandolin
Steel guitar (lap steel, Hawaiian)
Violin
Banjo

While obtaining my degree in Electrical Engineering I played in local nightclubs for a living, 6 nights per week. Good not-so-clean fun. I stopped relying upon music for my primary source of income in 1994, but still do some shows around town. I have children that otherwise keep me occupied; they are both becoming proficient on piano, bless their hearts!

I've been at music for almost 30 years, I started playing rythmn guitar then went onto lead, from there onto bass and now onto synths/keyboards...Written a lot of material, made recordings onto CD's played live with several bands  ect...Now I just work with NI Instruments and Cubase doing PC music producing and processing...Got tired of the none-paying gigs so this is what I do now...Maybe in the future with the right band's attitude I'll join as a keyboard/synth player

i make experimental electronic music, mainly drones and ambient.

I do this as Orphax and you can check my music (for free) at www.orphax.com (http://www.orphax.com)

I also play in a band named Zonderland, there is am also behind the laptop. This is more post-rock like, though with a big psychedelic influence. Our website is www.zonderland.tk (http://www.zonderland.tk) (if it still exists) but there is not much info there and no music the listen to either, though there is one track on last.fm

I'm an absolute beginner on the keys, know some computer music programms but don't do anything with that yet. Well, I recorded stuff, but it was at a local studio and not my own stuff. I plan to do some stuff, computer/keyboard based for a beginning but I need to get a usable soundcard first.
Well, I need some more good ideas and keyboard skills first anyway.

Hmm, I can't see the poll choices (Firefox 2.0.0.3).

I used to track back in the days with an Amiga 500.

I stopped after a while.

I started making music again in the Windows 95 days (Cubase VST) with my shiny new Terratec Maestro 32/96, combining MIDI with synthesized samples.

Then I stopped again. Maybe I'll pick it up again.

I do record sometimes but mostly I write music. And I agree with you, most musicains are probably audiophiles and vice versa.

PS can anyone else not see the poll questions?

I have recorded in the past but only with a horrible computer microphone.

Once i get my new drum kit, i'll be buying mics and stuff after, when i have a bit more money

EDIT: I cant see the polls either

Well, this thread is a little old but I don't care.  I write music but not lyrics, I also record music.  I have made one techno album but I used a keyboard and bass guitar for some actual recording (not just studio sound byte samples).  I have since made two instrumental industrial albums as well.  I made the techno album back during my freshman year in high school (this was in 1999), I made my first industrial album in 2002 and my second one in 2004.  I continue to make beats and musical hooks about once or twice a month but that is it.  I haven't made a full album.  I hammer out a song every once in a while.  It is strange that my first album was a techno one as I don't listen to techno and don't care for it.  My industrial albums have more of a Nine Inch Nails sound from "The Downward Spiral."  Unfortunately, only a handful of people have heard my music as I only have one copy of each album on CD and lossless backups on my computer.  I haven't distributed my music or anything like that.

I've been playing guitar since I was 10. I'm 20 now. I can play a few chords and scales on the piano. I usually write chord progressions, record them in Cubase LE, and then record a solo as a second audio track. I use a lexicon omega as my interface, which is way more inputs than I need, but oh well. May come in handy one day.

I guess i'll help in digging up this thread. I'm on my second year of A level music, so writing music of some form is compulsory! My deadlines are now just over a week away, so i may be boned. I thnk i have a long weekend coming up.

Outside of sixth form i play bass and a bit of piano - with the piano especially coming in handy for writing. I've never really tried recording anything of my own, with everything being written/submitted as scores in Sibelius. Music tech would've been the course for all that side of things.
