FFT and Spectrograms

Can anyone suggest a direction for me to learn the process of using FFT to create 3D spectrograms...?

I will be using raw sample data decoded from PCM WAV files.

From what I know so far, I am thinking that I would need to use FFT to transpose the signal from the time domain to the frequency domain at various frequency intervals. Then that would give me, in a manner of thinking, the "purpendicular slices" that I would have to plot into the Z-axis of the array, and which would represent the amplitude of the signal at each center frequency over time.

Does this make sense?

Anyone got any suggestions and/or web pages for me to learn this kind of thing?
