1) Lack of a formal FTP upload mechanism (either dialog based or Drag-N-Drop)

Pardon my ignorance, but which browser can do this? And how? Are there tutorials?
This is important as I am going to be traveling abroad and I want to still be able to upload my webpage.
Thanks.
I'm the one in the picture, sitting on a giant cabbage in Mexico, circa 1978.

Internet Explorer can do this. It just shows the remote FTP server in folder view (normal file manager Explorer view).

FYI: Your almost guaranteed to have Java installation problems with Firebird. Therefore...

1) Install JRE 1.4.2.1 (available here ...click on the install link)
2) Close Firebird and then open Notepad (or any plain text editor)
3) Copy & paste the following into it...

REGEDIT4
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Mozilla\Mozilla Firebird]
"GeckoVer"="1.0.1"
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Mozilla\Mozilla Firebird\bin]
"PathToExe"="d:\\Firebird\\MozillaFirebird.exe"
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Mozilla\Mozilla Firebird\Extensions]
"Plugins"="d:\\Firebird\\Plugins"
"Components"="d:\\Firebird\\Components"
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\mozilla.org\Mozilla]
"CurrentVersion"="1.0"

***replace all occurances of d:\\Firebird with your path (ie c:\\Program Files\\MozillaFirebird)***

4) Save the file as Firebird.reg
5) Now run Firebird.reg
6) Restart Firebird
7) Go here and pick Other Applets (ie Bubbles) to test

Another easy way to avoid problems when installing Java or other plugins is to use this  unofficial installer (compressed with 7-Zip) for instance:
