I was generally curious of what the difference is between the two and why Standard Quality Mode (Normal Bitrate) is preferable over Approximate Bitrate encoding even though AB achieves a higher bitrate.

The reasoning i've usually  heard is that it is a better quality than CBR.

Oggvorbis works best in Quality mode. In simple terms, Average bitrate is next best followed by CBR which is not true CBR but highly constrained ABR.
