From Yoko Kanno, I prefer Escaflowne OST. Brain Powerd is cool too.

Hummm... My favorite soundtrack of all time is probably Chariots of Fire (I really enjoy Vangelis, so I like 1492 and Blade Runner as well)

(No, it isn't More... or Obscured by Clouds  )

Besides, I would like to mention "The Last Emperor" (David Byrne + Ryuichi Sakamoto)
Dances With Wolves
The Untouchables (Morricone, I think)
The Godfather
Forrest Gump (Wanna a piece of cho'colate?)
Heaven & Earth (Kitaro)
...

>>I don't know but horror movie themes are best, halloween, The exorcist.

The only tune I remember from it is Oldfield's "Tubular Bells", was there more good stuff in it besides that?

Speaking of animated shows - some of the music in "Samuri Jack" is very cool.
Of course, not much beats Marge & Homer's version of the "All in the Family" theme.

edit> How could I forget Twin Peaks (or vitually anything by Badalamenti w/ Lynch & Julee Cruise)

Heh. I agree that Miyazaki is a fantastic filmmaker. But, IMHO, Joe Hisaishi's soundtracks plain suck. I don't think he's a great composer. And I simply can't stand Nausicaä's soundtrack.

(Spirited Away has some nice tunes though)

All great OSTs. But only the first and last were great movies.

I agree with fewtch, in the fact that Conan the Barbarian is the best movie soundtrack I've ever heard (although I'm still mad at the horrible job of mastering that was done on the album.  It sounds like it was recorded in the 50s, not the 80s).  John Williams soundtracks are okay, except that he rips a lot of stuff off from composers like Holst, Mahler, Wagner, and Dukas, to name a few.  (Listen to the end of Holst's Mars, Bringer of War if you don't believe me).  As far as game soundtracks go, Chrono Cross takes the cake (I even went so far as to run the audio output from the PS to my computer to record many of the songs.  If anyone knows of a better way to rip PS audio direct, I'd love to hear it).

Hey Tim,

You haven't heard the Conan soundtrack on vinyl by any chance have you?  I'm wondering if the mastering is any better with the vinyl release... since it was the early 80's, mastering for digital was in its infancy...

Cheers,

fewtch

Several proggies convert from Sony ADPCM (XA) to WAV.

One nice option is PSMplay.

But they are all based on reverse engineering (I think), so maybe the PS native decoder has better quality (even recording through line in)

Anyway, the best way to get CC's soundtrack is buying the CDs

I have them, and like them a lot.

Roberto.

Thanks for the advice.

@fewtch - Sorry, I've only got the CD.  I was only 2 when the original came out, and my old 60s turntable broke a few years ago, so I gave up on vinyl after that.  It would have been cool if they would have done a new digital performance of it for the 20th anniversary this year, but what are you gonna do?

I know it would be best to actually buy the soundtrack, but I wanted the songs right away!  And it was good practice using line in recording.
