prevent ignorant tag updaters (WMP, Win Expl) from destroying mp3 cust

Apparently Windows Media Player and Windows Explorer still don't support ID3v2.4 (jeez), and I have also read they don't recognize custom TXXX frames, and using either one can result in your tags getting destroyed if for some reason it tries to update the mp3 file.    Aside from making the file read-only, if I don't care if WMP/WE ever is able to recognize the file, will it protect the file from damage more to:

1) use v2.4 with TXXX frames,  or
2) use v2.3 with TXXX frames

Or neither?

Is the big problem with v2.4 because of UTF-8 character coding, and not necessarily with the tags themselves?
