XviD or DivX

Which one do you prefer to backup your DVD's into XviD or DivX or any other video format, What about their output qualities?

That depends on later usage.
Have you got a SAP? You may prefer DivX. But you can use XviD's profiles too. If your SAP plays XviD S@L3, AS@L5, (tweak some settings for your SAP), you will have a faster encoding and in most cases a better result with XviD.

For playback only on PCs without any restrictions it's probably XviD, but if you have a fast CPU it will be a good idea to try AVC (x.264 for example) too.
Slow encoding, slow decoding (maybe not realtime) but in most cases delivering better quality.

In detail:

If link isn't working (Opera may have problems) click Archive -> 2005 -> 12/26 -> "2005 codec comparision"

Last time H.264 has faster decoding than MPEG-4 (ffdshow the fastest MPEG-4 ASP decoder + with Postproc. (PP) )

And it's possible to find settings to encode faster and still better result for H.264 High Progfile than MPEG-4 (Xvid 1.2 or divX)

Main reason for XviD:is FREE and OPENSOURCE, DivX is commercial product.

For quality XviD and DivX can do very good, speed is attribute of XviD, DivX at high quality settings is very-very-very slow, XviD 2pass encoding is great, H.264 is the future,
becose of hardware support for both encoding/decoding from modern graphics cards. So I recommend using XviD for now (in some coutries it is ilegal to use US, Japan etc.).

@IgorC
CoreAVC is commercial, the release was for testing only, so i ignored it. (Sorry for misunderstanding.)
I also don't do postprocessing, never tested with.

It depends on  taste and how good or bad is video. But :
1. ffdshow without PP is slower than CoreAVC without PP.
2. ffdshow with PP is slower than CoreAVC with PP.

True, CoreAVC is now fastest decoder.

CoreAVC don't have PP, ffdshow have but PP for AVC is unuse.

@NeDtHeOnE XviD is excelent choice becuse is better than any version of DivX. If you don't like x264, ateme you should use XviD.

CoreAVC does have PP  turned on for AVC  by default.  There was Core TCMP player where AVC PP was possible to turned off.
PP for AVC is mostly deblocking filter (aka inloop).
Also ffdshow has AVC and ASP pp. ASP decoding for AVC is useless and only hurt quality.

Yes but if want play without TCMP only AVC deblocking is turned on.
