Title: hi res flac > foobar > gts 450 > avr - audio problem
Post by: ooztuncer on 2013-04-19 07:33:39
Hello all,

First post on the forums! I am having some problems with audio output through my htpc.

I have a denon 987 (same as 2807) and my connection is:
htpc (foobar version 1.1.18 > wasapi (event or push doesn't matter)) > gts450 video card's hdmi output > denon 987 receiver (hdmi1 - pure direct) > stereo speakers

I am getting an "Unsupported stream format: 96000 Hz / 24-bit / 2 channels" error and in the control panel it looks like 96000hz is not supported by denon (please see the below ss).

However, I believe 2807 supports 24bit/96000hz input via hdmi.

The test was done with HDtracks Anti-Master quality connection (high res flac files/format): https://www.hdtracks.com/index.php?file=log...ialbum_id=13277 (https://www.hdtracks.com/index.php?file=login&redirectto=samplealbumdownload&ialbum_id=13277)

As mentioned here (http://www.computeraudiophile.com/f13-audiophile-downloads/hdtracks-anti-master-quality-collection-14096/), "despite HDTracks stating that all tracks are 96/24, 4 tracks are actually 44.1 kHz - not 44 upsampled to 96, but actual 44.1 - and one is 88 kHz".

I have no problems with 44.1khz tracks but I am unable to play 96khz since in the control panel it seems like it is not supported.

ADDITIONAL INFO: I found out that AVR doesn't support 96khz FLAC file formats; however these files would be decoded into 96kHz LPCM by the foobar. And I am sure denon 987 accepts stereo LPCM via hdmi.

Now either foobar is not correctly converting flac to lpcm OR there is something wrong with the connection.

My concern is regardless of what foobar does or does not, in the control panel I should be able to see "96khz" in the supported formats section due to GTS 450, wouldn't I?

Best regards.

I'm pretty sure your AVR doesn't support FLAC.

1. Transcode the FLAC it to PCM yourself and play it back in foobar and see what happens.
2. Try a 16-bit 44.1KHz FLAC file and see what your AVR says.

Thank you for the quick reply.

Yesterday I learned that my avr doesn't support flac (and mentioned in my original post).

i) How am I going to transcode "HI-RES FLAC to PCM", is there a software for it or a plugin in foobar (i thought that foobar already does it)?

ii) Still, I am confused why in the control panel GTS450 shows that it doesn't support 96hz. (EDIT: I meant Denon not gts450)

Appreciate all the help.

No problem!

1. Use foobar's inbuilt converter and convert to WAV, then playback that WAV file. I know my AVR-2805 can support 96KHz over S/P-DIF and yours is a later model.
2. It maybe that your GTS450 is just passing on what your AVR supports? But that's just a guess on my part.

Is there a device supporting FLAC stream over digital input (SPDIF, HDMI)? I have not heard of any yet.

That's not really helping the OP is it.

IMO learning about the way my gear works with my chosen format can never hurt.

Hello again,

Here is the outcome: after converting high res flac to wav via foobar, I got the same result. It wont play through foobar +wasapi and I get the same error.

However, if I select DS (direct sound) rather than wasapi, 96khz flac or wav would play and on the avr i see the pcm signal. Downside is sound is rather distorted and if I remember correctly DS uses windows mixer and processing.

And for the last half an hour I am trying to get a spdif signal (red light) from realtek's onboard audio with no success. I was going to try digital out of onboard sound card.

Have you tried updating the video drivers? On www.geforce.com/hardware/desktop-gpus/geforce-gts-450/features (http://www.geforce.com/hardware/desktop-gpus/geforce-gts-450/features) it says:
Quote
(...), and 7.1 digital surround sound will be added in a Release 260 driver.

In case the new driver won't help, maybe 400 series cards are to old for HDMI audio: If I remember correctly, with the 200 series cards, HDMI audio only came through a additional wire connected to your mainboard spdif output (so they didn't generate the stream themselves). The formats your device supports look suspiciously the same as the formats a spdif connection supports.

Are your sure the receiver gets 96khz with directsound? I think DS resamples everything to a samplerate supported by the audio device.

If you only have spdif, you're stuck on 44.1/48 Stereo, but the Windows mixer of Win7 should be transparent, so you don't need to resample in Foobar.
