High AccurateRip Confidence But Verification Fails

After doing some research I'm 90% sure I know the answer to this question, but for peace of mind I'm going to ask it anyway. I'm using Exact Audio Copy 1.1 and AccurateRip cannot verify one specific track even though the confidence is consistent with the rest of the tracks from the disc:

Code: [Select]
Track  9

     Filename C:\Music\Def Leppard - Pyromania\09 Def Leppard - Rock Of Ages.wav

     Peak level 100.0 %
     Extraction speed 8.1 X
     Track quality 99.9 %
     Copy CRC B390D08F
Cannot be verified as accurate (confidence 67)  [447C9337], AccurateRip returned [C9E97861]  (AR v2)
     Copy OK

Later the log summary provides details regarding the AccurateRip discrepancy:

Code: [Select]
  9   | (55/57) Differs in 115 samples @04:20:22,04:21:34,04:21:69,04:22:29-04:22:31,04:23:25,04:33:13

What I think this means is that the data ripped from this specific track matches what the data ripped by 67 other people, but that whoever initially uploaded the data calculated a slightly different AccurateRip checksum, possibly due to a scratch or other disc imperfection. Is this correct? Also, why does the confidence (67) not match the corresponding number from the log summary (55)?

Thanks in advance for your help!

You're looking at results from two different databases. AccurateRip in the above and the CUETools database below.

Your rip of this track differs from the one in the accuraterip database (possibly ripped in error despite what EAC is telling you?).

Your rip of this track differs from the one in the cuetools database by 115 samples.

The accuraterip database is not the same as the cuetools database.

EDIT: korth was faster.

EDIT #2: If it were me, I'd "repair" the track and then look at the differences.

If 55 of 57 people from the CUETools database generated the same AccurateRip checksum, isn't it a good bet that the 56 of us produced an accurate rip while the other two rips are outliers? Also, I assume that the "Copy CRC" is some type of file checksum used internally by EAC and not compared to an online database?

Thanks again for your help!

In relation to the track in question, to be clear, you are not part of the "us".

I'll attempt to address outliers when I have more time.

Understood, that's why I incremented the 55 from the log summary to 56 in order to include myself.

Regarding the "Copy CRC", is there a utility to verify this value at a later date? For example, if I wanted to verify that a file has not been modified since it was ripped. I'm not aware of a common checksum algorithm (e.g., MD-5 or SHA-1) that generates an eight hexadecimal character string...

That's misleading since you failed to present any data about the tracks that you ripped which were accurate.

Regarding the CRC, if you had included the EAC log header I could tell you what algorithm was used.  While it can be used to verify the integrity of the data, that is not the reason for EAC's presenting it.

High AccurateRip Confidence But Verification Fails

Indeed there is a probability that there is only one pressing, accounted for by 67 ARv2 contributors and 55 of 57 CTDB contributors, with the 2 of 57 being bad rips of that one pressing. There is also a probability that there is another pressing, one which is not as commonly ripped, and which differs from the common pressing by a few samples. If that's the case, and if your rip really was error-free, then there won't be any way to know for sure until someone else with the same pressing gets the same result as you, boosting the confidence to 2. You could try the rip with a different drive if you would like to expedite this determination.

You might want to try ripping at 4x instead of 8x, assuming your drive supports it.
8x is still fast enough to cause some errors due to speed.  Also, 115 samples isn't very much for errors.  They might not be audible.
But I can understand you wanting it to be zero.
Be a false negative of yourself!

This.

Hmm, I was under the impression that the "confidence 67" below indicates that my rip is identical to the rips of 67 other people, even though the AccurateRip checksum of my rip does not match the database:

Code: [Select]

     Filename C:\Music\Def Leppard - Pyromania\09 Def Leppard - Rock Of Ages.wav

You can't possibly know the 67 part based on the information provided.

It is also possible (albeit only remotely possible) that it could be 1/X as the database keeps 1-off checksums in limbo until there is a match from a different user ID.  I am not suggesting this is the case, however.  If it turned out that a unique user also submitted 447C9337, then subsequent matches would be shown with a confidence of 2.

In the event that there are different sets of AR checksums for a given track in a given record, the checksum and confidence that is shown to the user is that for the first entry in the record.

I'm not buying this for one second.

Also, FWIW the drive is clearly operating in CAV mode and is doing more like 25x by the time it's hitting this particular track.

Still, it wouldn't hurt to try ripping the track again with the speed throttled, though I wouldn't go as low as 8x, let alone 4x.  With the settings chosen, the actual ripping speed should be less than a third of whatever is selected.

In this case, simply re-ripping again without changing anything could give accurate results.  Ripping in burst mode may give accurate results as well (throttled or non-throttled).

So the confidence 67 reflects the C9E97861 rip, not my 447C9337 rip? And my 447C9337 checksum has not been previously submitted by anyone, otherwise the confidence would be at least 2? If so the format is confusing as confidence 67 is listed right next to 447C9337...

CRC32 for the raw PCM data only.

EAC presents a copy/read checksum so that you can compare with test checksum.

Edit: korndawg beat me to it.
So that would be the (confidence 67) found under [C9E97861] (ARv2) as shown in the log. That's what I meant by the 0/67.

Currently it would return (confidence 69) for that checksum

With only 115 different samples over the entire album, I don't see why that can't be done.

I'd love to know more about why EAC blessed the track, and welcome additional attempts at ripping using different settings.
