Redoing mp3gain

I have applied mp3gain on my songs with the default target of 89db without the undo tags. Now I want to reapply with a higher db target. Will it degrade the sound? (apart from possible clipping). I'm no expert, but AFAIK, mp3gain changes only the gain value of the frames, not the frames themselves. So in theory it's possible to redo the gain without problems. Or am I wrong?
