4:3 letterbox movie needing 16:9 treatment in GKnot

I have a 4:3 letterbox widescreen movie that I am encoding.  The movie shows up in DGIndex as 4:3 but when I choose 4:3 Non-Anamorphic in Gordian Knot and do an autocrop, GKnot does not get the right aspect ratio.  When I choose 4:3 in Gknot, Gknot gives me an aspect ratio of about 1.85 when the movie is 2.35.  When I change the setting to 16:9 Anamorphic in GKnot, GKnot seems to get the correct aspect ratio of 2.35.  Why is that?

either a bug in dgindex or in gknot, but there should not be a problem determining visualy if the movie is 4:3 or 16:9.
