"Matching" of songs- Amazon and others

So Amazon has a premium service where they will take your tired, your poor, your low bit (or high bit rate) mp3's (and AAC?) and match to 256 VBR.

Question: Are they matching to original songs, or to covers, or to songs by the same artist but a version that was re-recorded to avoid copyright payments?

And if not the originals, can anyone let me know which other services do match to the originals?

Thanks.

Google Play Music has been replacing whichever uploaded song matches theirs and keeping the original file when it doesn't.
Listen to the music, not the media it's on.
