After giving up on STB's with FLAC support (AppleTV w/ XBMC, NeoTV 550, Sonos), it appears I have to build a PC to get what I want. Leaving the hardware out of it, what I want is something that behaves similar to Windows Media Center but that will work with my FLAC files. They are album FLAC files with embedded CUE sheets. Album art is external .jpg files.
I'd prefer something that shows the artists in alphabetical order, then the albums within it with cover art. If it can extract the song titles and allow me to play the individual track, even better. All must be done via a remote.
Does such an animal exist?
Of course, if there is a non-PC (non-Windows 7) box that does something similar, I'm still open to those suggestions too. It must have S/PDIF to go to my receiver.
It'd help with suggestions if you gave reasons why nothing you've tried to far was suitable.
I was immediately going to suggest XMBC but you say you've tried it.

Maybe I didn't configure it right. It supports album FLAC files with (internal/external) cover art and gapless track playing? Hmm.

With something like the Logitech Dinovo Mini (http://amzn.com/B008JGU3YA) as your remote you can probably control just about any software you want to use that has FLAC support.
Maybe you should have a closer look what DLNA/uPNP can do for you. It's not quite exactly what you asked for but maybe what you want.

Yeah, its done all that since at least the mid-2000s.

I don't think DLNA in general does gapless playback? I know it's not in the OPs list but it's one reason I stick to my Squeezebox. My TV and BR player both do DLNA but can't do gapless.
I use XBMC mounting an NFS share on the network and it plays FLAC files gapless without issue. I use 1 file per song so I don't know 1st hand about it's cue sheet support but I seem to recall reading somewhere that it supports them.

I don't want to get into the peculiarities of Windows + XMBC so I'll give OpenELEC a shot and see how it goes. Thanks.
