Would it be possible just to 'turn off' cbr/abr encoding with q0? That way we would still be able to get the better results of the vbr without the poor abr/cbr results.

3.93.1 has just been tagged. It is not yet uploaded to sourceforge, but the code is (at least should be) frozen.
You will probably get it tomorow in daily compiles from Mitiok.

I'd like to thank those who helped tracking problems and solving it.
