How good is AAC VBR in iTunes 5?

Sorry if I seem like a bit of a noob here, as most of this is still pretty new to me.

If I read this thread correctly, then ripping my CDs using iTunes as 160kbps VBR AAC is  the way to go if I want pretty much CD quality audio for my iPod and listening at home?

If I'm unclear or wrong in any part of my question, let me know and I'll reply.

Thanks in advance.
