Title: 0.9.5.4: keyboard shortcuts?
Post by: endersdouble on 2008-08-01 08:19:18
Hi, on my new computer, I tossed the new version (.9.5.4) on, whereas before I had been using .9.3.1.  I noticed, to my dismay, that most of the keyboard shortcuts I had been relying on (z,x,c,v for stop/pause/play/next, most notably) were absent.  I see the keyboard shortcuts dialog in Preferences, so I could always add them manually--but there are rather a lot, and I'd prefer not to have to manually add every shortcut.  Is there either a) an option I missed somewhere to enable all the traditional shortcuts or b) a way to export my shortcuts from the old install and import them here?

Thanks.

thread about one letter shortcuts for >= 0.9.5 (http://www.hydrogenaudio.org/forums/index.php?showtopic=59366&hl=)

Keyboard shortcuts
In order to minimize potential interference with typing in the new Default User Interface, existing single-letter shortcuts without Alt or Control modifier keys are removed on the first run after installing 0.9.5. Manually re-adding these shortcuts, while possible, is not recommended due to the issues stated above.

is that it?

Well, that explains what happened, yes.  I'm more curious, especially since I don't use the default UI (I use Columns) why the change was necessary, and if there's a "good" set of shortcuts people like to use for quickly doing normal stuff like start/stop/pause/next/previous.

It really surprises me negatively that foobar is still released with NO keyboard shortcuts, basic part of a program interface. Maybe not optical, but still an interface. And still the technical reasons for not alllowing one-key shortcuts or whether will  ever be fixed remain unclear.

I  find myself using more n more 0.8.3 version, which  resided in my machine because of some not-ported plugins...

I think the main reason why one-key shortcuts are not default anymore is that shortcuts now work throughout the whole application, even when the focus is in a text editing field (e.g. Media Library Search). A shortcut then would be triggered everytime you type a certain letter.

However, one-key shortcuts still can be assigned. But you will have the "problem" that they work, regardless which sub-window or UI element (especially text fields) of the program is active.

That information is outdated. Single-letter keyboard shortcuts should not be triggered in edit fields.

@thecircusfreak:

That issue has been fixed long ago. You might want to try a recent version.

oh! thank you frank.

I was using the last ver but I hadnt tried to change any shortcuts. I was just looking the changelogs for any notes on this.

So it was just a temporary measure(thats what i had thought in beginning), great!

Yeah it would be nice to have better control of keyboard shortcuts, it all seems a bit divided as it is, on the one hand there is the option to set keyboard shortcuts, on the other hand developers can set their own which you can't control or override.

As long as they don't work in text boxes I don't see the problem with single key shortcuts either...

Still I think there are problems and these will remain because then each key combination should be processed individually if we'd like to get rid of all these problems.
E.G. in elder versions we were able to use left and right arrow keys for fast forward and revind within a currently playing track. Currently if such a key is assigned it clashes with the default user interface and it is no longer possible to expand or colapse treeviews using arrow keys, it is also inpossible to move between tabs using arrow keys and many more.
