Title: Crossfeed 0.60 for Winamp 2.x
Post by: Trelane on 2002-12-01 04:25:44
Hello. After a month or so of tweaking, I'm releasing the latest version of my crossfeed DSP plugin. So, what's new? I've added simple triangular dithering with 2nd-order noise shaping, modified the lowpass curve, and fixed a silly bug that could cause problems with unsupported PCM formats.

For right now, this is a binary-only release.

The old configuration system has been temporarily removed. It will be back in a later release in a much sleeker (codewise, anyway), more customizable form.

Download it and let me know what you think. Thanks!

This is a great DSP, it really made a difference on my Sennheiser HD570s. Certainly does make the music sound a heck of a lot more natural.

Thanks!

WTF? I tired this Plugin with a variety of songs but I cannot hear any difference with my Sony MDR-CD170, cannot even ABX it . I created a CRC checksum of some files to make sure the plugin is working right. Is anything wrong with my hearing ?

Well, it makes the music slightly more spacially seperated, and also seems to physically raise where I hear the music in my head. It really does improve how I hear the kind of music I listen too (dance/techno). So far I've tried it with a lot of songs, and it's a really good plugin.

Do you have any other Winamp DSP plugins running? They might be conflicting with each other and cancelling out the effect.

Try playing a piece of dance music with this DSP off for about a few seconds, then enable it as it's playing. You should actually hear how the music changes. It's not a massive change, but it's enough to make it sound better... for me, anyway.

Perhaps other people (or even the coder himself) could recommend a piece of music that sounds obviously different, to demonstrate to you how it works.

I doubt it. If the music you tried was mono (especially below about 1200 hz), then there will be no apparent difference when run through the plugin.

Download this clip (http://www.naivesoftware.com/crap/ffsi.mp3) and give it a listen. It's Self Immolation from Fear Factory's album Concrete. Listen to the guitar in the right channel and the cymbals in the left as you enable the plugin. They should appear to be pulled slightly forward.

Ah, it's very obvious with that clip! Thanks .

Great work!
Together with the EQ of the Kx drivers the sound seems to come "out in front" if I can describe it like that
Thanks a lot for this! Waiting for even better things from you

Just wanted to write you to say that I, too, enjoy your plugin. Thanks for making (and updating) it!

I use it with a pair of Sennheiser 580's and a Musical Fidelity X-Cans headphone amp. The combination sounds great on its own, but your plugin really help a lot when my heaering is already fatigued and/or the mix is extreme in regards to panning. I have tried others, but none I've used before quite got the balance right enough to be really useful. Well done!

Wow, an even better headphone crossfeed!

The new plugin moves hard-panned sounds even further away from my ears than the previous version (v0.53, was it?), and keeps the open, airy feeling to some songs that v0.53 had made "stuffy-sounding" (the effect was most apparent for me with songs that had fuzz guitar effects). Placement of off-center instruments feels more well-defined, too... I can close my eyes and point to the "location" of instruments more easily.

This plugin is truly a pleasure! I can't wait for the next version... I miss the 40% crossfeed preset!
