$info(channels) differs from %channels%

I may have overlooked this someplace, but my understanding was that  $info(tagname) and %tagname% are two different notations for the same result? i.e. both returning the same value if one is present?

I was trying out the Dynamic DSP component and instead of tagging files with DSP chain names I started based on the number of channels. But to my suprise $info(channels) says "2" where %channels% says "stereo"

?
