What exactly is 'CRC Error Protection'?

In the switches for LAME, is a option for CRC Protection. I know that its done to prevent errors and corruption in files, but what exactly is it? What exactly does it do?

It's added to detect errors and corruption.  It cannot prevent errors and corruption, let alone repair errors and corruption.
