Porcus' link shows information from March 2013. A slightly differing view from the Netherlands is found at:

Hans is a longstanding audio writer. That particular video is rather discouraging of using a computer for audiophile work. My original inquiry regarding Docker containers for foobar2000 was based upon the idea of using the NAS as a "light" computer as the video describes, with tagging and cataloging being handled on a different beast.

There are many ways to skin this cat. I just can't afford to be separated from too much money in the process.

The padding block is overwritten with zeros (cleared) by most software when metadata is changed, and it is extended if the new metadata is shorter. Padding is never removed until you invoke a special command for it. This is by design and allows to remove the cover and add another cover in its place or extend the text data quickly without rewriting the file.

When you edit the text data, the padding is still there but it is smaller. In a file with a large cover art, editing text data causes a noticeable delay in Foobar because it accesses the cover data too.

The task is to display the path in the filters, or rather part of the path - the folder in the middle of the path

Eg: g:\Audio\Metal\Swallow the Sun\2021 - Name Album

My music is sorted on the disk by genre - I want to sort genres without nested and parent folders, how to experiment with variables?

%_path% / %_directoryname%

Do you have that dash in the name of your genres "Pop-Rock" or you just used it on the forum?
Do you put hard rock bands in "Pop-Rock" as well. Right?

I use the dash in the tag, yes; could use a slash but when (automatically) sorting the music into folders (with Foobar) it gets converted to a dash anyway.
Yes, it is a catch-all category for anything pop- or rock-like or -related (e.g. what some others consider "disco", "progressive" or other subtle distinctions, whatever they mean by that). As I'm no huge "rock" fan (even though I'm a geologist) that's enough for my needs.

Case, what do you think of these two software packages; Audio Optimizer and Fidelizer Pro? I do not own them but found them referred to in some other discussions. They are supposed to shut down extraneous processes in a Windows based music server to reduce jitter. Are they snake oil in your opinion?
They might in theory work on some machine, but not the way the authors describe. There are known cases of harware monitoring tools and broken drivers causing DPC latency issues that make realtime audio playback glitchy. If these tools happened to close whatever process or driver was responsible for the issue then they would introduce an actual improvement in sound. But if one suffers from this problem the solution is not to buy these expensive tools but to uninstall the bad software / find the broken driver and update or disable it.

As Porcus' link showed, extra process activity does not cause extra jitter.

The bit depths you see are reported by the decoders. Assuming you use identical status bar configuration on both machines the differences must be caused by you having different version of foo_input_sacd.

The built-in update check can only update components that exist in the official component repository. SACD decoder isn't there, it must be updated manually.

PS: you can safely remove foo_input_dsdiff.

Yes, Pop/Rock seems to be the catchall genre. I found a book on Google mentioning the same.

I'll go with that, it's much easier for me to just put bands like Pink Floyd, Queen, Van Halen, Madonna, and all these together. I really don't have the time and energy to think what Rock or what Pop are they and it doesn't worth it. I will only create separate genres for music like R&B, Country, New Age, or Christmas.

Pop and Rock are two of trickiest genres, some pop music has rock elements in it, some don't.  I think that's why the allmusic website uses a similar approach putting the two together, or Spotify even dropping all the genre thing and don't even showing them up. I will rely on the artist name for searching for music. I don't really collect compilations.
