I contacted Kenwood again and they pointed me to this page, which lists some specs/limitations, for example the 999 folders limit:

So I tried with a different set of files, with around 600 folders and it still didn't show them all. But this time it topped at 347. So the 310 from before is not a hard limit and something else is going on.

Anyway, I don't think I'll bother with this anymore. It's not something that affects my use case and it's just a mild curiosity at this point.
