hi Tim,

great stuff I downloaded it and it works great on WMP12/Win7

Do you have any plans to enable multiple song editing - in the ATE, if you selected multiple songs, the options are greyed out until you clicked on a field. This was useful for compilation albums, for example, when the Album Artist was Various Artists and the Artist was different for each song

Thanks

Yes, multiple song editing, just like with the Advanced Tag Editor, will be possible in the next major version of Windows Media Player Plus!.

Awesome job I was just playing with the other functions

re-enable all plug-ins after a crash is a godsend. (not saying WMP crashes often, but I have more than a few plugins LOL

Hello sir, your application is great
I just install it on my windows7 64bit
But the plugin only work with the 32bit (x86) version of wmp
I normally use 64bit version of wmp as it runs very fast and smooth on my machine
it will be great if you integrate this application to work with the (x64) version of wmp. (64 bit windows 7 contain both the x86 and x64 version of wmp)

By the way your app works great and it rocks

Thank you

Unfortunately, there currently aren't any plans for a 64-bit version of WMP Plus!. This would require a lot of work and time, which I would rather spend on adding new features instead. The x86 version of WMP should run just as fast and smooth on Windows 7 64-bit, though.

General news: Windows Media Player Plus! has gone out of beta and the final 1.0 version has been released. The official Windows Media Player Plus! web page can be found at http://bmproductions.fixnum.org/wmpplus (http://bmproductions.fixnum.org/wmpplus)

hey tim thanks for the work on this one.

when i saw the screenshot for the tag editor plus i thought maybe you had figured out a way to force WMP to sort by disc number.  the problem is that it writes the field but WMP doesn't use it to sort.  it is spelled out a bit in this thread here:

http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums...9d-64ea9a07953e (http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en/w7itpromedia/thread/47e46e5a-63c0-4a92-b39d-64ea9a07953e)

and in this post in this thread:

http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums...36-778c21554017 (http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/w7itpromedia/thread/469fb26b-79ca-4a64-8ac6-62161901b714/#7ed3ac70-4ca2-4063-9236-778c21554017)

i still don't see the filename collision issue with only the set field.  if i picked an equally poor naming convention that didn't accomodate for this with other fields that may be duplicated across two discs, or even the same disc, i'd have the same problem.

is there any chance you'd be able to fix this issue or force WMP to use the set field with the next version?

If you're having that problem, it's because you're not using WMP's standard disc number convention.

Title Disc #

is what WMP uses. So for example, for a multidisc release of AwesomeAlbum, "AwesomeAlbum Disc 1" and "AwesomeAlbum Disc 2" will give you the proper ordering in the library. I know this because I've manually added multidisc albums to my library before.

Basically WMP takes its defaults from the AMG metadata lookup service it uses. If you use AMG's conventions for manually edited tracks as above, you'll be OK.

that was kind of discussed in the links i provided above.  it really is a personal preference thing, and for conformity to the standards of multiple other players.  the field is there, WMP sees it and can write it, but it does not use it to sort, so i was inquiring if it would be possible to tell WMP to use it.  i don't want to seperate the album into different discs.  i want to go into MC and chose play album once and have it play the whole album in the right order.  i have a twelve disc collection of bethoven sonatas and would have to add each one when really it is a full release.  the workaround i used for now was to set the tracknumbers to 101-110, 201-210, etc...  this just messes up support in other players somewhat.

Yes, sorting by disc number is certainly something that I'm going to look into for the next major version of WMP Plus!. I can't promise anything yet though, it may be too hard or simply impossible to implement.

I hear you. Yeah, cross-player/platform compatibility is still a real mess.

Show currently playing media in WMP's title bar.

This part isn't working for me. Fortunately it is finally displaying it in the taskbar button, but still not showing on the titlebar.

Using WMP12 on Windows 7 Pro x64 (using the 32bit version of WMP).

Is this in Library or in Now Playing mode? Does it still work in the other mode?

Would it be possible to post a screenshot of this?

If possible, can a feature be added to WMP Plus to fix the skip forward/back shortcut key functions that were  "broken" in WMP12?

For background, see this thread: http://social.answers.microsoft.com/Forums...e7-672c4456f1a8 (http://social.answers.microsoft.com/Forums/en/w7pictures/thread/156cc63d-4b09-45cf-95e7-672c4456f1a8)

In summary, WMP 12 has been changed so that the shortcut keys for skipping only work if the focus is on the slider bar.

We need a plug in like WMP Plus that will intercept the keys and allow skipping forward and back by various sized steps (5 sec, 30 sec, 3 minutes for example) using keyboard shortcuts.
The keyboard shortcuts need to function regardless of of the application's focus, and work equally well in full screen or minimized mode.

There are also requests to make the space bar function as play/pause (it is not mapped to anything else)

It seems clear that the people at MSFT that make decisions on the WMP user interface doesn't actually use WMP.

Yes, WMP Plus! 2.0 will definitely add a global hotkeys feature to WMP, and hotkeys for skipping forward/backward will be included too.

There are also requests to make the space bar function as play/pause (it is not mapped to anything else)

In WMP 12, the space bar does seem to work for playing/pausing, but only when certain parts of the window are focused (like the Library or Playlist pane). I'll see if I can add something in WMP Plus! 2.0 to make it work regardless of the focused window, this shouldn't be too hard.

Great - I'll be watching for WMP Plus! 2.0.

You are probably already aware of this, but there is a Sourceforge project for a plugin that does some global shortcut key functions for WMP: http://sourceforge.net/projects/wmpkeys/ (http://sourceforge.net/projects/wmpkeys/)
I downloaded the source and was thinking about modifying it myself, but if you are close to releasing WMP Plus! 2.0, I can just wait for that.

seriously looking forward to this! definatley a must!
another suggestion, maybe add an auto update feature or a suggested update that u can turn on or off?
Title: Windows Media Player Plus! - Various enhancements for WMP
Post by: Tim De Baets on 2010-06-08 15:43:12
Well, I have tried some things in the meantime. The displayed track numbers are relatively easy to change, but sorting still happens for the original values, so that's not very useful. I'm afraid that it will be very hard to change the way WMP sorts tracks, so it's unlikely that this will be included in the next major version.

Auto-update would indeed be a nice feature. I have already planned more than enough new features for WMP Plus! 2.0, but perhaps a later version will have this.

any chance you could alter the codecs so that windows media player can rip to aac or even mp3 lame encoder instead of the poor one it uses now

No, that's not worth the trouble, in my opinion. There are much better programs than WMP for ripping, that offer far more options. Examples are CDex and Exact Audio Copy.

You can still get album art, and sync the MP3 files, after they have been added to WMP's library.

Hey Tim De Baets, your idea of a plugin to fix WMP is awesome. With version 11 and version 12, MS removed quite a lot of features from WMP. Do you think you can add most of them back? See what they removed here (and my wish list is the same): http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Windows_Media...emoved_features (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Windows_Media_Player#Removed_features) (WMPlus already restores some of them). Great addin. Thanks.

Wow, that's quite a lot of items, and there simply isn't enough time to re-add them all to WMP. Could you please list the ones (5 or so) that are the most important to you?

Also, I currently don't have any plans to add features to the sync, burn or rip functionality of WMP, so only library and playback enhancements will be considered.

Hey Tim, I've been having a few issues with WMP+ on Windows 7 Pro x86 (Core Duo). When the option to display the track metadata in the window title is enabled, WMP's UI freezes sometimes when a new track that has been added to a Watch folder but not yet automatically detected and added by WMP is played. Since this happens a lot when I add new media to my home PC, I've disabled it there. The plugin works just fine on Vista Ultimate x64 though (Core 2 Duo).

Thanks for reporting this. Have you changed the format of the title bar text, or is it still set to the default (%title%[ - %artist%] - Windows Media Player)? How exactly are you starting playback, by double-clicking the track in Explorer? What's the file type of these tracks? Are there any other WMP plug-ins loaded?

For now, I have been unable to reproduce this problem on my Windows 7 system. I first tried to copy a music file into the My Music folder, but WMP added the file to its library before I had a chance to start playing it. Then, I removed a music folder from the monitored folders list, and re-added it. While WMP was adding the files back to its library, I now had a chance to play some files that weren't added yet, but still no hang.

Hey Tim, any possibility of extending tag editing to Matroska videos?
Title: Windows Media Player Plus! - Various enhancements for WMP

That's more a suggestion for WMP Tag Plus (http://www.hydrogenaudio.org/forums/index.php?showtopic=75123) than for Windows Media Player Plus!, but no, there currently are no plans to add Matroska tag support to WMP Tag Plus. If you are a developer, you could write such support yourself, by making use of the Tag Support API (http://bmproductions.fixnum.org/wiki/Tag_Support_API).

Hey Tim 2cool,
I have noticed sevaral bugs with WMP11 XP SP3, though.
1. If WMP Digital Media Ed. Plus! AlarmClock.exe is running,
a. Comp Restart hangs, until Task Manager\AlarmClock.exe\End Process is done.
b.Right, or double, clicking on AlarmClock tray icon does nothing. One con get to AlarmClock props in WMP options.
c. This happens even when WMP Plus! is disabled in WMP.
2. DW20.exe and DWwin.exe toss errors on comp shutdown. These indicate they never initialized properly to begin with.
3. These all go away, when WMP Plus! is uninstalled.

I suspect it ties in with Dr. Watson error reporting issues and altered WMP Plus! Error panel. This happens even when these options are unchecked in WMP Plus! options.

Since this is a semi-independent plugin which runs without wmplayer.exe, it may tie in with shell extension issues from WMP Plus! right click File menu additions. I'd surmise that other such plugins may have the same effect. That's my guess.

One last question, is Tag Plus! as complete and up to date as the full WMP Tag Plus! app?

Hope this helps. Maybe ver. 2.0 will fix these?

Thanks!

Regarding the first problem, I installed MS Plus! Digital Media Edition and WMP Plus! on my XP SP3 system, but didn't notice any problems at all. What's your version of AlarmClock.exe? I tested with version 1.0.0.2239. Also, did you install Plus! Digital Media Edition to the default location? Is there any chance that it was installed in the Windows Media Player folder instead?

a. Comp Restart hangs, until Task Manager\AlarmClock.exe\End Process is done.

Does it hang when Windows is shutting down (with the Not responding-dialog (http://i38.photobucket.com/albums/e150/ruffdiamond/tea-1.png)), or at the subsequent Windows start-up?

For the DW20.exe and DWwin.exe errors (these are actually crashes), I need some more information. Please go to Start - Run, type eventvwr.msc and press Enter. Go to the Application log, and look for Error events in the list, there should be at least one for each crash, and sometimes even two. Double-click each event corresponding to a crash, and press the copy-button to copy all information. Then, please send me a PM containing the information of these crash events.

One last question, is Tag Plus! as complete and up to date as the full WMP Tag Plus! app?

What's the difference between Tag Plus! and the 'full WMP Tag Plus! app'? There's only one version of the WMP Tag Plus plug-in. Perhaps you are confusing WMP Tag Plus with Windows Media Player Plus?
Title: Windows Media Player Plus! - Various enhancements for WMP

AlarmClock ver. = 1.1.0.2428
Since DWxxx's are the error reporting progs of Win, there are no error reports generated! I'm assuming they are hooked into the altered error pages included in WMP Plus! I did not try the Tag Plus! features. Since the options were in the WMP Plus! options, I thought a pared down ver. may have been included. Maybe dimming those when Tag Plus! is not installed would help. Not all the text on the options screen are screenreader friendly. Some improvement there would help, as well. I have been a MSDN dev and IBM brat, so have been through all the avg TS steps, before posting.
No confusion here. I'm short on time, but will try to keep up on this.
Thanks Tim.

I still haven't been able to reproduce the problems with Alarm Clock. I tried installing some updates of Plus! Digital Media Edition, but then Alarm Clock wouldn't even run, because I can't activate it without a serial. I did notice that the AlarmClock.exe process doesn't quit when I select Exit, but this happens with or without WMP Plus! installed.

About the DW20.exe and DWwin.exe errors, you sure understand that this is far too little information for me to go with? I definitely need the technical information of these crashes, you should be able to get this by clicking something like Details in the error reporting dialogs. If you have done troubleshooting before, then maybe you know what crash dumps are? It would be great if you could send me the crash dumps of these crashes.

I think that you are confused about the Plug-in properties menu added by WMP Plus!. This menu allows you to quickly access the properties of all installed plug-ins, not just WMP Plus!. So if you have WMP Tag Plus installed, it will appear in this menu. If you have the WMPKeys plug-in, it will be there too, and so on.

Not all the text on the options screen are screenreader friendly.

If you could tell me which text isn't screenreader friendly, then I might be able to fix this.

Hi Tim,  really like what you've done with WMP+.  I'm a bit of a newbie on this stuff having used Advanced Tag Editor quite happily in WMP-11.  Now running WMP 12 and struggling with how it manage tags etc. I'm no expert and I'm afraid this is a bit of a long post...

What I want to do is rip compilation CDs and then re-tag each track with its original artist/album/track number etc.  This should leave a number of albums in both the library each with only a few of the original tracks, so I

a) rip the CD and let WMP auto populate the tags (so I get the correct contributing artists, track names etc, but with album artist usually set to 'various artists', the album title set to that of the compilation and the track number being the one on the compilation).

b) use your "tag editor plus" to change the album name, album artist and track number. (However this doesn't always change the relevant fields in the "advanced" section (e.g. AlbumID) until I do something next like change the genre and then the advanced tags pick up the correct info - which is presumably a seperate issue).  So far so good, when I do this to the first track it appears as only track of a separate album in the WMP library.

Now what I then want to do is pick up the correct album art, date of release etc associated with this "original" album.  so I

c) Use "find album info" on the track. Now for some reason WMP still remembers that it was part of the compilation - the "find album info" pop-up shows the "existing information" to be that of the compilation (!). So I then search for the actual artist & album title that I need, I select it and instead of just showing me a mapping of the one track, it shows the whole "original" album. If I say OK it now retags ALL of the compilation tracks as if they were the tracks on the "original" album by that one artist.  Somehow WMP is still linking them all together and I've no idea how or why. The info that I can see in Windows explorer, WMP and tag editor plus doesn't give me any clues

(I've also tried this using WMP 'apply media information changes' at various stages but makes no difference - apart from having to wait 5 minutes each time)

Can someone point me in the right direction please....  (and I know you may ask why do I want to do this breaking up of compilations but that's a different question!)

Thanks
Chuck

What I want to do is rip compilation CDs and then re-tag each track with its original artist/album/track number etc.
If that's what you want to do, then you do NOT want to use WMP to rip the CDs. The reason is WMP inserts a CD TOC (Table of Contents) in the tag for each track it rips, which not only allows it to permanently "remember" which CD each track was originally ripped from but also links all the ripped tracks together in the database. Change the metadata (album art, etc.) for one of them, and the corresponding field changes for ALL the media library tracks ripped from that CD. This makes editing tags of files ripped with WMP a batch process for albums, but as you've seen it results in some inconveniences.

The only way to stop WMP from being able to recall the original track source is to remove the TOC tag, which is not something you can do within WMP itself. You'll have to use a 3rd party tag editor (I recommend Mp3tag) to completely strip the file(s) of all tags. Once that's done, find them in WMP again by searching for some part of the filename, and then run the "Find Album Info" process again. You'll now be able to edit to your heart's delight without any of the issues you mentioned previously

Another option, which I recommend more is to use EAC as the original ripping tool so you don't wind up with TOC tags in the first place.

I believe that it's the WM/WMCollectionID and/or WM/WMCollectionGroupID tags that are responsible for this. You can see these on the Advanced page of Tag Editor Plus, but unfortunately, they are read-only, so they can't be removed there.

Quote

Another option (that will preserve all normal tags) is to use ID3-TagIT (http://www.id3-tagit.de/). Select the file in ID3-TagIT, click More... on the right, go to Not supported, uncheck all PRIV frames, and click OK (you may need to remove the tracks from library first for this to work).

In conclusion, the simplest workaround is indeed to use a different program for ripping CDs, as LANjackal suggested.

Thanks, I wasn't aware of that one

That's more a suggestion for WMP Tag Plus (http://www.hydrogenaudio.org/forums/index.php?showtopic=75123) than for Windows Media Player Plus!, but no, there currently are no plans to add Matroska tag support to WMP Tag Plus. If you are a developer, you could write such support yourself, by making use of the Tag Support API (http://bmproductions.fixnum.org/wiki/Tag_Support_API).

Even if I did write a tag addon for Matroska, it doesn't appear that WMP Tag Plus hooks into it. (I am also running with the assumption that WMP Plus includes Tag Plus as a component.) So there's still the need to add the ability to use the tag editor on videos, and preferably also on files in the "Other Media" category.

Just to be clear, Windows Media Player Plus! doesn't include WMP Tag Plus, these are two separate plug-ins.

In the next major version of WMP Plus!, I might make Tag Editor Plus available for other media types, such as videos, but only the Advanced page will be shown. The other pages are too music-oriented, and most of tags in these pages are only available for music.

WMP places the Matroska files in Other Media because it doesn't recognize the file type. To make it recognize them as video, a registry patch (http://a8t8.spaces.live.com/blog/cns!2518DD508BB713E8!220.entry) needs to be installed for WMP 11. For WMP 12, it seems that you need to install DivX Plus (http://a8t8.spaces.live.com/blog/cns!2518DD508BB713E8!802.entry).

Actually, it's not the file type issue -- with KLCP installed, WMP does recognize quite a few of my mkvs as videos and organizes them appropriately. So it knows that (at least some) are videos. However, it is not at all consistent about it; I have the exact same video in two different places on my system, one of which WMP has under Videos and the other under Other Media.

With KLCP, do you mean Kazaa Lite Codec Pack? If so, I suggest that you uninstall that. The Kazaa Lite codec pack is notorious for damaging people's systems (which applies to most other codec packs as well).

This isn't really the place for WMP support, but have you tried re-adding the videos to your library? I'm pretty sure that WMP 11 only looks at the file type for classification, in WMP 12 it could be different. If you still need help, you could ask this in the Windows Forums (http://social.answers.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/group/WindowsAnswers), more specifically in the Pictures and Video forum of your version of Windows.

I strongly second this opinion. Codec Packs are nothing short of pre-built recipes for disaster. If you want multiformat codec support, just use VLC.

Hi Tim!

I use WMP Tag Plus! with WMP12, but the Advanced Tag Editor option doesn't show up in the context menu.
They are selected in the WMP Plus!'s configuration.

Any solution to this?

And a different question: are you planning adding l10n support for your plugins?

Wow, that's quite a lot of items, and there simply isn't enough time to re-add them all to WMP. Could you please list the ones (5 or so) that are the most important to you?

Also, I currently don't have any plans to add features to the sync, burn or rip functionality of WMP, so only library and playback enhancements will be considered.

Hi - Well one thing that I'd certainly like to see (and not listed on the Wikipedia list) is to bring back the "Recently Added" tab to the the Music library.  Given that I'm always adding stuff and often forgetting what I've added,  I used to use this a lot, but it disappered in WMP 12.

Thanks for all your hard work!

I think that you're confusing Windows Media Player Plus! with WMP Tag Plus. They are two completely different plug-ins, the difference between them can be clearly seen on my website (http://www.bm-productions.tk/).

For the new tag editor, you need to download and install Windows Media Player Plus! (http://bmproductions.fixnum.org/wmpplus/). After installing, right-click a song in the library and choose Tag Editor Plus.

No, not at the moment. For WMP Tag Plus, I don't really think it's worth it, given the minimal UI (most people will only see the plug-in settings once, or a few times at most). For Windows Media Player Plus!, perhaps in a future version.

And what are the new features of WMP Plus!?
Some more new features will be added as well, but I prefer not to tell anything about them until the release.

You can pretty easily create your own Recently Added list as an auto playlist. In WMP's library, click the arrow next to Create playlist and select Create auto playlist. Enter a name for the playlist and add the condition Date Added under Music in my library. You can then further customize the condition to something like Date added is after last 30 days or Date added is after yesterday.

The option is actually called "Tag Editor Plus", are you sure that it's not in the context menu? Are you right-clicking a song in the library center pane, or in the List Pane on the right? Is the song in your media library? (this is currently required)

Can you see Windows Media Player Plus! in the Tools - Plug-ins menu (press Ctrl+M if you don't see the Tools menu), and is it ticked (loaded)?

Thank you for volunteering to translate. I have noted this, and will contact you by PM when I'm planning to add l10n support.

Hi there, thx for the plug in!

Do you have any update on the 'sort by Disc#', it's the only thing keeping me away from using Windows Media Player.

The funny thing is, Explorer has support for it and Zune has support for it. But no support for WMP or WMC, which is to me very weird.
I simply refuse to call every album 'Album Title Disc 1' and 'Album Title Disc 2' etc, since most software nowadays support the tag.

Cheers!

Yes, sorting by disc number will likely be included in the next major version of WMP Plus!, although it will still be experimental (i.e. not turned on by default, and with a warning).

Ok.

Do you perhaps have any estimated time of when 2.0 will be out? I mean, are we talking 2011 or 2012?

Another thing I would like to see is to have the option to disable the Ctrl+Left/or Right arrow keyboard shortcut for skipping playlist. It is very annoying when I'm editing fields in WMP, and want to jump over words etc.

2.0 will probably be released in one of the first months of 2011, but "it will be done when it's done".

I can see what you mean with Ctrl+Left/Right now working as it should. I might try to work around this in a future version of Windows Media Player Plus!.

I'm using version 2.1 as of now, and the 'Restore last active playlist' (EDIT: actually the entire 'Restore last playing media on startup') option is a bit buggy for me. It refuses to save the playlists when I restart the player. The problem is specifically for ad-hoc playlists that I created by dragging stuff onto the 'Now Playing' sidebar. Auto-playlists (and normal playlists, I presume) work just fine.

Is this just me?
Title: Windows Media Player Plus! - Various enhancements for WMP
Post by: Tim De Baets on 2011-03-31 23:24:24
Did you already have this problem with version 1.x or 2.0? I don't really see the difference between ad-hoc playlists and normal playlists. Would it be possible to report your exact steps, so I can try to reproduce the problem?
Title: Windows Media Player Plus! - Various enhancements for WMP
Post by: coffretmugs on 2011-04-01 03:26:33
I can't say for sure about version 1.x, as I've only started using WMP again recently. I can confirm the same problem on 2.0 and 2.1, though.

Steps to reproduce the problem:
1. Open WMP, clear all previous playlists.
2. Add songs from Library view to the 'Now Playing' sidebar on the right. I do this from dragging albums from search results, from dragging albums in 'Artist' view, etc.
3. Songs are now in 'Now Playing', playback ensues.
4. Quit WMP. Start WMP again.
5. Name of the playlist is somewhat preserved (e.g. name of the Album that I dragged), but track items and media state are gone.

Which version of WMP and Windows are you using?

When WMP is closed, Windows Media Player Plus! will save the current media, playlist, play state and position in the HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\BM-productions\WMP Plus\WMPState registry key. Please check if this is the case on your system, you should at least see an ActiveMedia and an ActivePlaylist entry in that key, after having closed WMP.

I'm using WMP 12 on Win 7 Home Premium 64-bit. I can confirm the appearance of the registry keys.

Attached are some pictures that may be of some use.

1. This is how it looks like when I'm making an ad-hoc playlist. A file is selected and playing.

2. This is what happens when I restart WMP. The playlist name is still stored (same info as the regkeys), but the tracklist and currently playingfile is lost.
Title: Windows Media Player Plus! - Various enhancements for WMP
Post by: Tim De Baets on 2011-04-01 19:34:19
Unfortunately, I'm unable to reproduce this on my Windows 7 test systems. With "clear all previous playlists", do you mean clicking the Clear list button at the top?

When Windows Media Player Plus! needs to restore a playlist that hasn't been saved yet, it will instead restore the lastplayed.wpl file in C:\Users\<yourusername>\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Media Player. If you open that file with Notepad after closing WMP, does it contain the playlist that should be restored?

Also, what's the value of <yourusername> in that path? Does it contain any special characters?

I have used tag editor since some months and I have installed tag editor plus 2.1.  But now, I don't manage to change tags of my music.
I select a track, I launch tag editor, I see the windows "track info", I change an info, I select OK and the default below appears :

What's the full version number of WMP on your system? You can see the full version through Help - About Windows Media Player (press Ctrl+M if you don't see the Help menu).

Did you have a chance to try this with Windows Media Player Plus! 2.0 too, or did you only use version 1.0 and 2.1?

Also, please report your exact steps, so I can try to imitate your behaviour as much as possible.

I don't have install SP1 of Windows 7, can it be a pb ?

Exact step :
open WMP
right clic on a song
select tag editor plus
select Sheet "Summary"
Enter another number of track (the pb appears whatever the info I change)
select apply or OK
The error appears.

I try to uninstall wmp plus 2.1, I install wmp plus 2.0 and I have the same pb.
When I have installed wmp plus 2.1, I don't remember if I have unistall before wmp plus V1.0. Can it be a problem ?
I try to unactive and active wmp but the pb doesn't disappeared.

I have just tried Tag Editor Plus on that exact same version of WMP, but still no errors there. Not having SP1 installed shouldn't be a problem. Installing version 2.1 before uninstalling 1.0 shouldn't be a problem either.

When you change a field in Tag Editor Plus and click OK/Apply, does the field change in WMP's library, despite of the error? And does the changed field 'stick' (not change back to the original value)?

Also, can you change fields directly in WMP's library, without using Tag Editor Plus (by right-clicking the field and selecting Edit)? Does the change 'stick' then?

Would it be possible to upload one of the affected songs? You can use something like Yousendit (https://www.yousendit.com/), and send me the link by PM, or through the e-mail address in Windows Media Player Plus! Settings - About.

Feature suggestion: Album Shuffle.

I think it's pretty cool to shuffle albums instead of tracks. Shuffling the current view (i.e. search results, categories) would also be pretty awesome instead of shuffling the entire library.

I've tried looking around for this functionality, and the closest one I found was this: http://ablumshufflewmp.sourceforge.net/ (http://ablumshufflewmp.sourceforge.net/) -- Yes, it's a typo. However, the project seems to be stagnant. The project page doesn't even have clear instructions on how to use it.

No, I don't have any plans for such a feature, even if it were technically possible (which I doubt). If music from WMP sounds better than music from a browser, then you should probably try to fix that issue instead (e.g. by updating sound drivers).

If this is because of some enhancements (like SRS WOW), I believe that Windows Vista/7 also allow you to set these enhancements for the whole system, not just WMP.

I have taken a look at that plug-in, and it seems that the first two buttons (< Random and >) can be used for shuffling albums. Not sure what the other buttons are for, though. Album Shuffle might be added to Windows Media Player Plus! in the future, but I don't have any concrete plans yet.

It's already possible to shuffle the current view in WMP's library - when you double-click a song, all songs in the current view will get added to Now Playing, and will be played shuffled when Shuffle mode is enabled.

I actually meant this in the context of album shuffle. Say if I were to look at songs I've rated 4 stars or songs from my search of "Vocaloid": I'd like to shuffle them by album instead of individually.

Of course, this is just a thought that I've thrown out. I just caught myself thinking "Hey it would probably be cool if I can hear my favorite songs by album".

Thanks Tim for a great plug-in. I have only recently moved to Windows7 and WMP12 and was despairing of the lack of the ATE which I used to split Albums and add lyrics. Your plug-in answers that prayer.

The only other problem that I have with WMP12 is that the Now Playing screen which had previously always shown Genre now doesn't. I had used Genre for quite a lot of extra album information which I wanted displayed in Now Playing. Is there anyway for the user to determine what fields are displayed in Now Playing?

Do you mean the genre that appears when you hover the mouse over the musical note in the top-right corner of WMP 11's Now Playing mode?

There currently aren't any plans for making Now Playing UI customizations possible. However, if there are enough user requests for it, I might consider adding that in the future.

Yes. The genre in WMP 11 Now Playing appears in the third row down when you place the cursor on the Album Art (a musical note if left blank). I would leave the cursor there with the Magnifier running to get readable-from-a-distance music information.

I have found that the Plus! editor does not remember the last few entries in the edit boxes as the old ATE used to do. This was a convenience but can be worked around.

I have no experience with MKV subtitles at all, but you may want to give the Local Subtitles for WMP (https://sourceforge.net/projects/wmpsub/) plug-in a try. It also seems weird that FFDShow can only do DXVA on 64-bit. Is that a known issue, specific to Windows Server 2008?

Yes. The genre in WMP 11 Now Playing appears in the third row down when you place the cursor on the Album Art (a musical note if left blank). I would leave the cursor there with the Magnifier running to get readable-from-a-distance music information.

If a Now Playing customization does get added to Windows Media Player Plus!, then it will most likely be something that appears in place of the album art/visualization (but that will possibly display the album art itself).

I have found that the Plus! editor does not remember the last few entries in the edit boxes as the old ATE used to do. This was a convenience but can be worked around.

History (and auto-complete) for the fields in Tag Editor Plus might be added in one of the next versions.

I believe it's because of the driver. It's 64bit. And local subtiles for wmp it's just for local subtitle files. It can't read from mkv files.
For now I'll try again on a clean install to see if I can use ffdshow dxva with wmp 32bit.  If it's not working, I hope it won't take that long until you'll release a 64bit version.

As I said, a 64-bit version isn't going to happen anytime soon.

If it's not working on a clean install either, then I suggest that you ask for help in the official FFDShow forum topic (http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?t=120465).

A Now Playing customization in place of the album art makes sense. But you need to watch out for a peculiarity of WMP 12 that non-full screen Now Playing with lyrics does not show the album art at all.

What do you mean with "tag pro"? Tag Editor Plus perhaps?

Can you see Windows Media Player Plus! in the Tools - Plug-ins menu (press Ctrl+M if you don't see the Tools menu), and is it checked (loaded)?

This is completely off-topic here, but: why don't you use WMP's built in DXVA decoders?

It's not possible to use subtitles for mkv files.

It is possible. Try DirectVobsub or FFDShow subtitle renderer with Haali Media Splitter.

Feature Request: Shuffle + Play

How about adding a "Shuffle + Play" option?  This is how I prefer to do shuffle playback of playlists and genres.  That is, shuffle all the tracks before they are added to Now Playing.  I prefer this since I can see the concrete playback order and the next track that will be played instead of it randomly jumping around in the list (like in the normal shuffle mode).  Thanks for considering it.

P.S. "Shuffle + Add Next" and "Shuffle + Add To End" would be great too.

That's exactly what Party Shuffle does  Party Shuffle is included in WMP Plus since version 2.0.

Manually adding songs to Party Shuffle is possible with the Play next or Add to options of WMP's right-click menu.

Manually adding songs to Party Shuffle is possible with the Play next or Add to options of WMP's right-click menu.

Unfortunately, I can't figure out how to get this to work in the way I described.  If I start playing the "Party Shuffle" playlist, select tracks in a another playlist, and select "Play next" they get added to the Party Shuffle list in the same order as they are in the original playlist (not shuffled before added).  Also, they appear to be permanently added to the Party Shuffle list which could cause this to get pretty large over time.

What would be ideal for me is a way shuffle the tracks before adding to Now Playing as I described above (new commands in the right-click menu).  This would use the temporary "Unsaved List" that gets cleared out each time.  I hope you can consider adding this.  Thanks.

Oh, so you want something like a Play next (shuffled) command in the right-click menu? That currently isn't possible, but I'll consider adding it in the future.

Regarding Party Shuffle, by default, only the 5 last played songs will be kept in the list so it will automatically stay in a reasonable size. Note that you can also set Party Shuffle to randomly pick songs from another playlist in the library (see the plug-in's settings).

Indeed, it doesn't seem like it's possible to search for artist names that include a colon symbol. This is probably because the colon can be used for more advanced queries like artist:"Daft Punk". Even enclosing the name with the colon in double quotes doesn't seem to work. Unfortunately, I don't think that there's anything that WMP Plus can do about this.

You should install WMP Tag Plus (http://bmproductions.fixnum.org/index.htm?http://bmproductions.fixnum.org/wmptagplus/index.htm). But your are in the wrong thread, use this (http://www.hydrogenaudio.org/forums/index.php?showtopic=75123).

Hey Tim, great plugin, but unfortunately I am getting the same error as WonderCsabo when I try to edit a certain tags in certain files. I can't upload any of the files right now as I am on a painfully slow connections (we're talking single digit kb/s here), but will try to at a later stage.

By the way, a great addition would be the ability to edit multiple tags at once (handy for album/artist when editing a whole album's tags) and a "next" button allowing me to go straight to editing the tag on the next song in the playlist.

In the meantime, WonderCsabo has uploaded the affected file and it turns out that the error is most likely caused by the file itself that isn't completely valid. So I suggest that you scan the files for problems with MP3 Validator (http://www.gromkov.com/faq/repair/mp3_validator.html) and let that program repair any problems it found. Then check if you still get the error afterwards.

Hi,

I hope this is not too trivial a matter.

Windows Media Player keeps 'losing' the plugin. It starts fine after download and installing if I launch WMP from the installation wizard but as soon as WMP is closed and then restarted the plugin is missing and not listed in the plugin options of WMP.

After reading through this thread I see there is no 64 bit version (I am running win 7 64), however it is mentioned that x86 should run seamlessly. Is the issue caused by my using 64 bit and how can I download the x86 version mentioned? I have just upgraded to 7 from XP and I don't want to use WMP without the beloved Plus plugin.

I would be very greatful if you could help me with the problem.

Kind regards,

Simon

To check which version of WMP is running, you can press Ctrl+Alt+Del to start Task Manager. In Task Manager, look for wmplayer.exe on the Processes tab, it will have *32 next to it if it's the 32-bit version. If not, it's the 64-bit version which is indeed incompatible with WMP Plus.

See the following article for instructions on how to make the 32-bit version the default: (right after "To undo the x64 change")

http://www.mydigitallife.info/how-to-set-6...-default-player (http://www.mydigitallife.info/how-to-set-64-bit-windows-media-player-12-wmp12-as-default-player)

Just running the %WinDir%\system32\unregmp2.exe /SwapTo:32 command might be enough, I'm not sure if you'll also need to create and run the .reg file.

I've been using WMP Plus! for a while and have found it to be amazingly helpful. I recently switched over to Windows 7 & here's my comments/suggestions/issues.

1. I would really appreciate if you could integrate the "show currently playing media in Windows media player's title bar now playing" feature into the "Now Playing" window. (Would it be possible to make it scroll when the info is too long to fit?)

2. In that feature I use the ATF Editor to display a lot of file attributes. I would like to display whether the file is VBR  or CBR but it always displays CBR (sometimes it'll start off VBR, and then immediately switch to saying CBR), additionally is it possible to display dynamic bitrate like foobar2000 does?

3. I find that when I choose the option to re-enable all previously active plugins after a crash the plugins do not get enabled.

4. Would it be possible to add a feature to restore the "Find in Library" context menu item to files that are in the playlists. It really bugs me that this was removed in WMP12.

5. 2 issues with the feature to display the File context menu. First, can you set an accelerator key for it to make it easier to use w/o a mouse, ('f' is taken by 'Find album info' & 'e' by 'Edit', so it would have to be 'i' or 'l')
Second, I'm having issues with getting all the context menu items to appear. Sometimes most of them don't display, and I don't know what causes it. It seems like it depends on which file I'm clicking on, or sometimes even which field I clicked on. Here's 3 screenshots to show what I mean:

1. I would really appreciate if you could integrate the "show currently playing media in Windows media player's title bar now playing" feature into the "Now Playing" window. (Would it be possible to make it scroll when the info is too long to fit?)

This is a current limitation of that feature. For what it's worth, the currently playing media does show up in the Now Playing title bar when the Windows Classic theme is used. I will look into this for one of the next releases.

At the moment, I don't have any plans to make the text scroll. It would be hard to determine the exact amount of text that fits in title bar anyway, especially with resizable windows and theming.

I would like to display whether the file is VBR  or CBR but it always displays CBR (sometimes it'll start off VBR, and then immediately switch to saying CBR), additionally is it possible to display dynamic bitrate like foobar2000 does?

I have also seen the %vbr% field returning incorrect values, but it simply returns what is provided by WMP so there's little that I can do about that. The switch during playback is a bit weirder but could be explained by the fact that a song needs to be played at least once for WMP to get the correct info. Does the switch occur every time you play a specific song?

With dynamic bitrate, do you mean that the shown bitrate constantly gets updated with the current value? Unfortunately, WMP doesn't seem to provide that info so I'm afraid that it's not possible.

Quote
3. I find that when I choose the option to re-enable all previously active plugins after a crash the plugins do not get enabled.

This is a known bug in the current version, at least on 64-bit editions of Windows Vista and 7. It can be worked around by running the following command in an administrator Command Prompt:

Code: [Select]
sdbinst -u -g {00a8ce68-cb2e-4652-aecd-c05c0d9d53a7}

Note that after applying this workaround, each time you run WMP after having used Media Center, WMP will automatically open the properties of some plug-ins (including WMP Plus).

Quote
4. Would it be possible to add a feature to restore the "Find in Library" context menu item to files that are in the playlists. It really bugs me that this was removed in WMP12.

I'm not sure yet if it's possible, but I will also look into it for one of the next releases.

Setting a fixed accelerator isn't feasible because the accelerators for WMP's own menu items differ between languages, so each letter of "File" is probably going to conflict in some language. I might add code to automatically set a non-conflicting accelerator, although that could confuse users if the accelerator changes between versions.

Quote

That definitely shouldn't happen and doesn't occur on any of my systems. Are you using the latest version of the plug-in (2.1)? Does it happen for the same songs each time or is it completely random? Would it be possible to provide some exact steps to reproduce?

I seem to be having an issue with the What I'm listening to feature of Windows Media Player Plus!

When I go to activate it, I am told that the Windows Live Messenger Music plugin is still enabled, even though it is deactivated in Windows Media Player.  I am currently using a fresh install of Windows 7 x64 SP1 which has WMP version 12.0.7601.17514, and the latest version of Windows Live Messenger which came out about a week or so ago, version 15.4.3555.308.  The only other thing I have installed related to Windows Live Messenger would be the latest version of MSGPlus!.  Prior to running MSN for the first time I also used A-Patch to remove the banner ads in the program.

For good measure I also tried unchecking Show information about the song I'm listening to in Live Messenger itself thinking that maybe it was causing the plugin to load even with it disabled in WMP, but no luck there either.

I am at a loss as to what else to try to get What I'm listening to working in WMP/WLM.

Are you using the latest version of WMP Plus as well (2.1)?

Please close WMP, copy/paste the following into Notepad, save it as a WMP.reg file, and double-click this file to add it to the registry:

Code: [Select]
Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\MediaPlayer\UIPlugins\{0776F107-F5A6-404B-9A78-7027FA6EAADD}]
"Running"=dword:00000000

"Running"=dword:00000000

Then restart WMP. Are you able to activate the What I'm Listening To feature of WMP Plus now?

Yes, I am running version 2.1 of your plugin.

It seems like the Wow6432Node key was the culprit, changing Running from 1 to 0 did the trick and lets me use the What I'm Listening To feature now.

Thanks for the assistance with the problem.

Hi
Just downloaded WMP+ 2.1 and tried to instal. Get error message that it cannot find WMP.
I am running Windows 7 Home 32bit. WMP is version 12.0.7601.17514 - x86 architecture and the computer came with everything installed - nothing special has been done and WMP runs without any problem for native files.
I have checked the Processes Tab in Task Manager and WMP does not have 32 marked against it, so I presume it is running the 64 bit version and this is the reason it comes up with the error message (?). Is there an easy way to convert to the 32 bit version so I can get WMP+ to load?
Cheers
David

Did you perhaps use some registry 'cleaner'? These are known to sometimes remove perfectly valid registry entries as well, with the result that the WMP Plus! installer can't determine where WMP is installed.

Please copy/paste the code below into Notepad, save it as a WMP.reg file, and double-click this file to add it to the registry. Can you install WMP Plus! now?

Code: [Select]
Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

Is there an easy way to convert to the 32 bit version so I can get WMP+ to load?

If you're running Windows 7 32-bit then you're always running the 32-bit version of WMP as well. It's not possible to run 64-bit programs on a 32-bit operating system.

Thanks Tim, that did it, and yes, my registry cleaner must have been the culprit.

Hi Tim,

Thanks for this plugin. I am wondering if there is a way to remove the stock advanced tag editor from the context menu. When I setup wmp for folks, I would like them to use your superior tag editor. It would be nice to not have the stock one available in the context menu. Thanks...

I'd rather not do this. I don't see any practical use and it can only cause confusion ("Hey, where did the Advanced Tag Editor go?"). Why not just let these people decide which tag editor they want to use, instead of forcing them to use the one in the plug-in?

If you really don't want the Advanced Tag Editor, you could still setup Windows 7 with WMP 12.

OK Tim,

I understand your concerns but you could have an option under Context Menus/Advanced Text Editor. It could be set to show or enabled by default. Then the user has the option to remove or disable. However if you do not want to add this option I understand. Can you at least point me to were I can disable it myself? Is the context menu stored in the registry or is it hard coded in a dll? Thanks for your support...

You might be able to remove the menu by editing the menu resources in the wmploc.dll file with a tool like XN Resource Editor (http://www.wilsonc.demon.co.uk/d10resourceeditor.htm).

Hi Tim,

Thanks for pointing me in the right direction. The XN Resource editor is a really neat app. I was able to track down and remove the stock Advanced Tag Editor. I had to rename wmploc.dll in dllcache so windows file protection would not replace my patched version with the original. WFP poped up and complained but it allowed me to keep the new file. The hack does not seem to cause any problems. The context menu still functions and your superior Tag Editor Plus works great. FYI my research has shown that the reason the stock tag editor was removed from WMP12 was because it was buggy and caused problems. This way when I set up a machine for someone, they will always use your tag editor without bugs and problems. Thanks again...

Hi Tim,

I have been loading a library for a friend and have run into a problem. I am using "Show disc numbers ('Set') in the track number-column". It was working perfectly but now is no longer displaying the disc number. I guess I have run into the 500 item limit. This is a nightmare as I have many multiple disc sets already in the library. I have had no problems what so ever with this option (i.e. no unexpected behavior or crashes). I am not sure why you had performance problems when you coded this? I there anyway I can override the 500 item limit? If not would you consider removing the limit in a new release? Thanks for your support...
Title: Windows Media Player Plus! - Various enhancements for WMP
Post by: Tim De Baets on 2012-06-22 14:42:48
First note that the limit doesn't apply to the total size of your library, but to how many songs you're currently viewing. So the disc numbers will still be shown if you're viewing an individual album, as long as that album has less than 500 tracks.

The limit has been added because the including of disc numbers slowed down WMP too much when it needed to load a large list of songs (up to a loading time of 1 second or more). If you really want to, you can change the limit by editing the IncludeSetMaxItemCount registry value in HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\BM-productions\WMP Plus.

Hi Tim,

OK I just figured out what you are saying. If you are viewing an artist with less than 500 songs then disc number will be displayed. However when I go to songs which displays all albums/songs, then if there are more songs than the value of IncludeSetMaxItemCount, disc number will not be displayed. I currently have 2419 songs in my library. I find that if I change the registry value to anything lower than 2419 the disc numbers are not displayed. If the value is 2419 or higher than disc numbers are displayed correctly when viewing all albums/songs. So this is working by design. I have to decide if I want to increase the registry value to a higher value or go back to not using disc numbers. I find it hard to believe that WMP does not support disc numbers by default.

I have another question regarding file naming conventions for multi disc albums. Currently I am using the library setting "Rename music files using rip music settings". Unfortunately disc number is not included in the file name options under rip settings. This of course presents a problem when adding multi disc albums. The filename will be changed from "discnumber-tracknumber song title" to "tracknumber song title". I have found the dialog box for file naming options using the XN Resource Editor. However there is no way to add disc number. Even if I could add it, I suspect the code would not pick it up and use it. Do you have any suggestions on how to handle this problem? How do you have yours setup? Thanks for your support...

I don't really see why you absolutely need to have the disc numbers in Songs view. They aren't going to be used for sorting anyway.

Indeed, WMP's automatic renaming functionality doesn't support disc numbers. You could rename your music files with an external tool that does support these, such as Mp3tag (http://www.mp3tag.de/en/).

I personally use MP3 Rename to give my music files a proper filename. This program doesn't support disc numbers either but I don't need those. Filenames in the %artist% - %title% format are good enough for me. And in a separate folder for each album of course.

Hi Tim,

Thanks for your reply. Well disc number is definately used for sorting in song mode in the case of a multi-disc album that is in one folder. Otherwise you will get disc1 track1, disc2 track1, etc. With your switch it displays all tracks in disc one first then disc two. I do use mp3tag to change my filenames to include disc number for a multi-disc album. However "Rename music files using rip music settings" will change them back if the album has not already been added to the library.

With all this being said, I think the best approach for me is to not use disc number or the set switch from WMP Plus. I will just put each disc from a multi-disc album in its own folder. This way I can use "Rename music files using rip music settings" if the names are not correct and I do not have to worry about the sorting in song view. It is annoying that I will have multiple entries in the library for multi-disc albums but that is just how it is. BTW I see what you mean about the performance issues when using the set switch. I have about a 2-3 second delay. Thanks for all your help and advise...

Oh, I understand what you mean now. Disc numbers are in fact also used for sorting songs in WMP's Songs view, my apologies. I just hadn't noticed this before because all my multi-disc albums are compilations, so each track is listed under a different artist.

Unfortunately there's not much I can do about the performance issue, so the limit will have to stay for now.

Hi

I recently downloaded and installed WMP Plus! v2.1 on a Windows 7 Pro x64 laptop with WMP 12. All was well I was able to complete a lot of tag editing and was overall very pleased with the plug-in.

However when going back into WMP some days later, I found that I had to re-enable WMP Plus! in the Tools option as the Tag Editor Plus option in the drop down menu was missing. So is this normal behaviour or is there something strange happening with my WMP that is disabling the plug-in?

I stopped using WMP 12 for one reason: The library is not updated properly and no way to force the update. Some plans do something about it?

I wouldn't really call this normal behaviour. Was this a one-time event or does the plug-in keep getting disabled frequently?

WMP automatically disables all of its plug-ins when it's not properly closed or has crashed, so that could be the cause - although then it's weird that you didn't see the 'plug-ins disabled' dialog at WMP startup. Another possibility is that you launched the 64-bit version of WMP. Since WMP Plus! is 32-bit only, that would disable the plug-in as well. WMP Plus's installer comes with a fix to prevent this from happening but perhaps this fix wasn't installed correctly?

A library that doesn't get updated anymore could be a symptom of library corruption. In any case not related to WMP Plus so off-topic here. The Windows 7 Media forum (http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/w7itpromedia/threads) is the right place to go with this.

The time values for Skip Forward and Skip Backward are fixed at 10 seconds.  Is it possible to change these time values ?  When you want to skip over commercials, only 10 seconds at a time is very tedious.

Thank you in advance.

Hey Tim, nice work on the plugin. Just installed it and it is working great.

I've got a feature request though. When you save a playlist in WMP 12, it automatically saves it as .wpl. Would it be possible to include a feature so you could order WMP 12 to automatically save the playlist as .m3u instead?

Thanks in advance and again, good job!

This is most likely because the latest release of WMP Plus! doesn't really support Windows 8 yet. The soon-to-be-released WMP Plus! 2.5 will support Windows 8. I'll PM you the download link to a beta of this version, so you can give that one a try.

Thank you for the feature request. However, I currently don't have any plans to add such a feature, because I don't think that many users are going to notice or need this, and because I doubt if it's even possible to implement.

Sorry, I only noticed your post just now because I didn't receive any e-mail notification for it (probably because it was posted somewhere else and moved in here later on).

I'm not sure about making the time values customizable, but what do you think of separate actions to skip forward/backward 30 seconds?

Okay, fair enough Tim. The reason for my request is just that .wpl is a proprietary format which not all players support. Therefore it would be easier if WMP saved directly to .m3u instead of .wpl, thus making life a bit easier by not having to keep manually saving the playlists as .m3u.

But yeah, I can see how it's a niche feature. I'll find a way to work around it.

It's quite likely that someone has already written a .wpl to .m3u batch converter. And if such a thing doesn't exist yet, it wouldn't be too hard to script it yourself.

WMP Plus! currently can't restore a playlist if it's not in the media library. Perhaps that's what was going on here?

I might look into removing this limitation for one of the next versions.

Hello, I've been getting errors from WMP Plus 2.5, while on Windows XP Home Edition (32-bit, FYI). After downloading the old 2.1 version (by changing the url in my download manager), the errors have stopped, so I guess there must be some non-XP-friendly code in there (). Here are my problems:

1. When I open WMP, I get a dll error: "An unexpected error has occurred while loading Windows Media Player Plus! Please contact the author if the problem persists. Exception Exception in module WMPPlus.dll at 002b700. CryptAquireContext failed."

2. Party Shuffle list is ALWAYS empty.

3. When I try to search through my library, I get another error message, telling me to report the error to Microsoft (you all know the one (http://www.freesmileys.org/smileys/smiley-basic/thumbsup.gif) (http://www.freesmileys.org/smileys.php)).

3.5 If I try to search for something with spaces, Windows Media Player closes without warning.

Things I tried before downgrading: reinstalling WMP, reinstalling WMP Plus, removing WMP Plus BEFORE reinstalling, and finally downgrading WITHOUT uninstalling (uninstalling first worked fine though).

My main system still runs XP SP3 and use WMP Plus 2.5 without any problems here, so there must be something else going on. Do you also have SP3 installed? Are you also using WMP 11?

The first error is related to Party Shuffle so that immediately explains why the Party Shuffle playlist remains empty. I'm not quite sure yet what exactly the cause is though.

Regarding problem 3, I assume that you're using WMP's Search field at the top? Does it make a difference if you start typing immediately or if you click in the Search field first?

I am using SP3, with all the lastest updates. Likewise for WMP 11, l. And yes, I am using the search field at the top. Whether it crashes immediately or not seems to depend on whether I search for something with spaces.

Also, I am having other problems with WMP. First off, I can't get my portable device to use MTP, which is unfortunate because this device was never able to effectively detect added/deleted/changed files Mass Storage Class mode. When I just now tried to fix this by reinstalling WMP, I got an error saying something like "Windows Media Player Install could not complete." I am wondering could these problems be related?

When you open an album, a screen appears which allows you to edit information listed in columns (as - Composer, Contributing Artist, Rating etc.). You can choose the columns shown from the Organise Layout panel, but album, artist and genre will now only  appear horizontally by the album art as total album entries. Previously you  could right click on a vacant part of the top bar to add these columns vertically so that they could be edited individually. Nothing happens if you right click now, not even an error message.

In the meantime, I've been able to reproduce the crash when searching for something with a space. The crash is a direct result of the error message at WMP startup, just like the empty Party Shuffle playlist. It happens because WMP Plus simply didn't initialize properly.

Does WMP also crash when you search for something without spaces? On my system, it only crashes when I type a space.

Now I just need to find out why the error message gets displayed in the first place. This can only be done with a special debug version of WMP Plus. Is it OK if I send you a download link to this version by PM? (this will be somewhere later this week)

These problems are unlikely to be related to WMP Plus. I suggest that you ask for help in the Windows 7 Media Forum (http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/w7itpromedia/threads), as that's the place for WMP support.

I still don't know what you mean with Organize Layout panel and top bar, but based on your description you might be looking for Details view but are in Expanded tile view instead. To switch, click the little arrow on the left of the Search field and select Details. By the way, this has nothing to do with WMP Plus.

If that's not it then I'm still confused. Please show what you mean by posting a screen shot (you can use Imgur (http://imgur.com/) for this).

Hi, thanks for this add-in, really handy for the tag editor, AND multi-disc sort.
Just a thought, if the disc number is 1 of 1 (and only 1), I don't think it's quite useful to display the disc number as part of the track number...

Also, without the plug-in, in Artist or Album view, I can press a letter and it will jump to the section starting with that letter.
With the plug-in, pressing a letter puts you automatically into search mode so I can't do that anymore.

I have used a few different applications over the years to rip my CDs. It just seems that a lot of them have set the disc number. I would need to do a massive job of removing all these tags. It can be done. I just figured that usually, since the point of these enhancements is to simplify our lives, I would take it into account in the code.

Thanks again.

I'm reluctant to change the code just for edge cases like this. It will also make the feature harder to understand for users, which isn't a good thing (especially since there's no documentation).

You can remove all these tags in batch with the Mp3tag (http://www.mp3tag.de/en/) tool, by creating an action that replaces "1/1" in the DISCNUMBER tag by an empty string. More info here (http://forums.mp3tag.de/index.php?showtopic=980).

Your plug-in seems to be exactly what I need.  What I'm most interested in is the tag editor.  But I couldn't even try it out because I happen to have the same problem as grimmis188 has (even though I downloaded version 2.5).  I'm using WMP 12 on Windows 8 64 bit.

Please check if Windows Media Player Plus! is still loaded in WMP: it should be checked in the Tools - Plug-ins menu (press Ctrl+M if you don't see the Tools menu).

If the plug-in is loaded, make sure that the song that you're right-clicking is in WMP's library (this is required for Tag Editor Plus to appear).

Also, are you right-clicking in WMP's Library mode or Now Playing mode? What's the language of WMP on your system?

Hi Tim,

Problem fixed!  You're a KING.

Since I'm about to record quite a few records, I was testing different tag solutions for FLAC files among which was WMP PLUS.  So I did not put any file in my Library.  From the moment i did put one test file, everything worked fine.

So, from now on, WMP PLUS is no longer one among the solutions.  It is THE solution I adopt.

Super good work.  And thanks for your prompt reply.

Since I installed WMP plus (on Windows 7 Home, WMP version 12) I have regularly experienced a problem where WMP will play a few songs and then return a "Windows Media Player encountered a problem while playing the file" message and stop playing.  In the playlist, the songs that it claims to have failed to played will ave the little red circle with a cross in next to their name.

If I close WMP and restart it and try and play the exact same songs, it will do so - but will then fail again a few songs later in the same way.

Do you have any idea what could be causing this and how it could be fixed?

No, I've never heard of such a problem so I would like to do some further troubleshooting. Are you using the latest version of WMP Plus, 2.5?

What's the file type (or types) of the affected music files (MP3, WMA, WAV...)?

If you click on the little red circle next to a song and select Error details, what's the full text of the message that appears?

Do you still experience the problem if you disable WMP Plus by unchecking it in the Tools - Plug-ins menu? (press Ctrl+M if you don't see the Tools menu).

Thanks for the prompt reply.  To answer your questions:
1) yes, using version 2.5
2) its all types of files - not one particular type
3) Error details: full text is just "Windows Media Player encountered a problem while playing the file."
4) yes, it still happens if plugin is disabled

It tends to go rapidly through five files, decide each is unplayable, and then give up (I know this as five consecutive files have the red cross next to them in the playlist)

Do you have any other plug-ins loaded in WMP? Does the problem go away if you uninstall WMP Plus again?

Web help takes me to http://windows.microsoft.com/en-gb/windows7/c00d11b1 (http://windows.microsoft.com/en-gb/windows7/c00d11b1).  i'd tried following hte instructions, and the drivers don't need updating.

No other plugins installed, though I can't test the uninstalling thing as I can't find any way to uninstall it.  When I go into plugins, the button saying "remove2 for WMP Plus is greyed out

You can uninstall WMP Plus at Control Panel - Programs - View installed programs.

The problem with Web help is that you immediately get redirected to another URL that contains less info. So would it be possible to click Web help again, but this time with your Internet connection disabled? This will prevent the redirect from happening and allow you to retrieve the full URL with all error details. Thanks!

Sorry for the late reply here - not needed to use windows media player in the last few days.  I can now confirm the problem *does* go away if I uninstall WMP Plus.

I will now reinstall again and will report back on whether the problem comes back; and if it does, I'll post the error message

Thanks again for your help

Yes its definitely happening again when I reinstall.  I see what you mean about the immediaate redirect - however when I do it without an internet connection, then Windows Media Player refuses to open internet explorer  I'll try again when I get back from work

I only tried Web help without Internet connection on XP, but on Windows 7 the button indeed doesn't do anything without a connection. I'll quickly add something to WMP Plus to get all error details and will PM you the download link when it's ready (probably during the weekend).

Thanks.  Its possible I might be able to find another way in the meantime, and if so, I will post here.

Incidentally, WMP Plus is great.  One extra feature that might be good for the future is to have a way of getting the playlists/libraries to always display in a custom order.  I have some playlists that I like to sort in order of date last played; and yet WMP never remembers this, so I have to reset it each time I open it

Thanks for retrieving the full error URL  Unfortunately, I'm still unable to reproduce this problem on my Windows 7 system so I'll need some more info.

After approximately how many songs does the issue start occurring? Are you using any of WMP Plus!'s features in the meantime?

What are the file versions of the mf.dll, mfplat.dll and audioeng.dll files in your C:\Windows\System32 folder?

Does the issue still occur when you boot Windows in Clean Boot (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/929135) mode?

Thanks for the suggestion, but the problem is that I haven't found a way yet for WMP Plus! to determine the current view in the library. So unless the custom sort order gets applied in all views (which would be less useful), this isn't going to be added anytime soon I'm afraid.

I'd say roughly about 6-7 songs or 15 minutes; but this varies and has been longer/shorter.  When I tried to "engineer" the error message appearing by skipping straight to the end of each song, I never managed to make the issue occur, so it may be more due to time than number of songs, but that is a total guess!

Yes.  Most of the features that were activated by default are still activated, as well as "disable group headers in the library pane

Those 3 file versions match the ones on my system. I tried to reproduce this again but still no errors after having let songs play for more than an hour. These were all MP3 songs though. Could you please check if it only happens when other music formats are involved? If these formats aren't natively supported then please also report back which codec is installed for playback.

Also, if you go to Control Panel - Sound, select Speakers, click Properties and then go to Enhancements, are there any enhancements enabled there?

OK just tried it again and I'm beginning to wonder if file type may be an issue after all

I played one list that was just MP3 for over an hour with no issues

I then moved to a list of mixed MP3 and WMA.  It played MP3 fine.  When it got to the first WMA it took a long time to begin the song but eventually did.  Then when it came to the next song (also WMA) the error message came up.  I'm wondering if somehow, when it took a long time to "work out" how to play the first WMA, it then caused some sort of system malfuntion that prevented it from playing any further songs?  Almost as if some variable in the code somewhere gets misdefined the first time a WMA song is played  (I don't really have a clue what I'm saying here - my only programming experience is in VBA  )

Thanks for the additional info. I now have a playlist with MP3 and WMA files that triggers a C00D11B1 error, but only at the end of the last song. It also happens without WMP Plus so it's probably still a different issue, although it could be related.

Do you know how these WMA files were created? Are they protected and/or lossless? To find out if they're protected, right-click the song in WMP's Library and go to Properties - Media Usage Rights. Lossless files can be recognized by their file size or by opening the file in the GSpot (http://www.headbands.com/gspot/) tool.

Also, if you right-click an empty area in WMP's Now Playing mode and select Enhancements - Crossfading and auto volume leveling, is crossfading turned on and if so, at how many seconds?

Crossfading not turned on.

Have put it on random and am keeping a track of what's playing tonight:
1) mp3, unprotected, no issues occurred
2) wma, unprotected, no issues occurred
3) mp3, unprotected, no issues occurred
4) wma, unprotected, no issues occurred
5) mp3, unprotected, no issues occurred
6) wma, unprotected, no issues occurred
7) wma, unprotected, no issues occurred
8) wma, unprotected, no issues occurred
9) mp3, unprotected, no issues occurred
10) wma, unprotected, no issues occurred
(at this point I got bored and just flicked through 10 more files quickly without checking them - no issues)
11) mp3, unprotected, no issues occurred
12) wma, some degree of protection but which allows infinite plays/burns, no issues occurred during the playing of this song

then the issue occurred: it flicked through 4-5 files in quick succession and then gave the error message with each file aving the red cross next to it.
the one it came to land on was an m4a file with no protection.  I looked through the list, and the others were an unprotected wma, an unprotected m4a, unprotected wma and unprotected mp3.

I wonder if it was the protection on song 12 that caused the issue...

I wasn't too sure how to recognise lossless files, but I downloaded GSpot and put each file through it, and I certainly didn't see the word "lossless" appear for anything

Can I also say thanks for the thoroughness of your replies and help here!

Update - tried it again this morning.  Same thing: it works fine, until it hits the first file with some degree of protection.  This morning it played about 10 songs with no protection, then one with it, then a second one with it, and then failed when it tried to move to the next song without

Just adding this in in case the fact that it played two protected ones in a row (as opposed to failing after the first) is significant!

WMA protection indeed was the key to get this reproduced. I've been able to perfectly reproduce the issue on my system with the two protected WMA files that I created.

It definitely looks like an issue caused by WMP Plus but I'll have to do some more investigation to find the exact cause. Hopefully I'll be able to come up with a fix quickly. When I have one, I'll PM you the download link to a version of WMP Plus with the fix included, so you can try it as well. Thanks again!

No, they're not the same. Tag Editor Plus is included in Windows Media Player Plus and is, not surprisingly, a tag editor. WMP Tag Plus is a completely different plug-in. For FLAC library and tagging support in WMP, you'll need WMP Tag Plus.

The difference between the two plug-ins is clearly shown on their respective homepages.

Announcement: Windows Media Player Plus! 2.6 (http://bmproductions.fixnum.org/wmpplus/) is now available for download. What was the message for the first song?

Can you please check if the song isn't being held open by WMP itself? You can do this by opening WMP's Play tab - the currently opened song will be highlighted (it doesn't necessarily have to be playing).

Which version of WMP Plus were you using before updating? It would surprise me if this got introduced with version 2.6 since there weren't any changes to the tag editor.

The first song lyrics page is editable in the normal way - there is no message. This would be the first song edited in WMP after a restart of Windows7. The play list is empty when the second song shows the error message. I now notice that all songs in the library with lyrics display the same error message after the first opening after a restart of Windows.

I am not sure which version immediately preceded 2.6. I had certainly already downloaded a 2.? version.

Then what exactly does happen when you try to edit the lyrics of the first song?

Are you saying that you don't see the message on songs without lyrics? Can you add lyrics to these songs?

What's the file type (or types) of the affected songs?

It seems that I can't reproduce this on my own Windows 7 system, so as far as I can tell, the songs are really open in another application. Can you check if you can edit the lyrics outside of WMP, such as in Explorer or Mp3tag (http://www.mp3tag.de/en/)? And can you also check if you see the same issues when booting Windows in Clean Boot (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/929135) mode? Thanks!

Yes, you can change the limit by editing the IncludeSetMaxItemCount registry value in HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\BM-productions\WMP Plus and restarting WMP. But note that the performance of browsing the library may suffer if the limit is too high.

It would be really nice if WMPPlus would support unicode file paths (at least i think that's the problem):
When editing files with Tag Editor Plus, "The request is invalid in the current state" pops up if the file path is not contained in the standard character set, e.g. if it's in cyrillic.
As Windows supports those paths, I would find it consequent for the plugin to support it as well.
This shouldn't be to hard to implement (maybe even only a compiler switch?) and make things a whole lot easier for people with other alphabets.
The error shows up if a tag is unicode and the file is not within a unicode path, but if you hit "apply" and then "OK" it is applied anyways - when pression only "OK" it usually isn't.

Otherwise I love your plugin, thanks a lot for it!

WMP Plus should already support Unicode file paths. Are you using the latest version, 2.6? On which version of WMP/Windows?

It's more likely that these issues are caused by the tags contained within the files. What's the file type (or types) of these files?

Would it be possible to upload one of the affected files, so I can take a look? You can use Dropbox or a file sharing website like SkyDrive/RapidShare, and send me the download link via PM. Thanks!

I came to that conclusion, as in the interface unicode strings are often displayed as question marks (eg. in Settings->Party Shuffle in the list of playlists, as well as in the error messages) and adding images works, if they are moved to another, non-unicode path.

Screenshot of the Messages / Folder: Dropbox link (https://www.dropbox.com/sh/04m9ygb41c35osi/WwabBFwCf3)
If you want, I can upload a audio file, too, but as it happens with every unicode named file I don't see much point in doing so.

Indeed, the Party Shuffle settings as well as the error messages don't properly support Unicode paths yet. Thanks for reporting.

What exactly do you mean when you say that adding images works?

Please do upload an audio file. I'm still suspecting that the errors are related to the tags, because using Tag Editor Plus on a Unicode-named file works fine on my Windows 7 system.

When adding images, unicode paths aren't supported (when moving the selected image to a non-unicode path there is no problem).
Second bug when adding images: after an error like the one created by a unicode path, the OFD won't show up again.

Hello Mr. De Baets,

Excellent piece of software. Unfortunately, some recent Windows update seems to have messed up the context menu functionality.

The issue is present when Windows Media Player Plus! is enabled, and absent when Windows Media Player Plus! is disabled. I tried resetting WMP settings and reinstalling both WMP and Windows Media Player Plus!, but the issue persisted. Disabling all the context menu features of Windows Media Player Plus did not fix the issue either.

I have windows 8.1 and in the November patch Tuesday there was this update http://support.microsoft.com/kb/3000850 (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/3000850) which seems to be almost like a service pack for windows 8.1. I am not sure if this is the source of the issue but seeing as I haven’t changed anything else since then that is my only guess.

Thanks!!!

Announcement: Windows Media Player Plus! 2.7 (http://bmproductions.fixnum.org/wmpplus/) is now available for download. This update fixes broken plug-in functionality on Windows 8.1 after installation of the November 2014 Windows update rollup (KB3000850). Additionally, a possible Windows Media Player crash has been fixed. Updating is highly recommended.

See the Version History (http://bmproductions.fixnum.org/wmpplus/history.htm) page for a detailed list of what has been fixed.

Please report back the technical details of the crash. Open the Start screen, type eventvwr.msc, and press Enter. In Event Viewer, go to Windows Logs - Application, and look for Error in that list, there should be such an event for each crash. Double-click the latest event and copy/paste its description into your reply. Thanks!

Hi;

I only recently acquired a new computer and was introduced to the horrors of the "new and improved" Media Player 12. A little searching led me to your wonderful program. After a couple of weeks
with it, I to started suffering the disappearing 'Tag Editor Plus' and 'Find In Library' choices. I have 2.7 installed and am still having those buttons go missing. Yesterday I re-installed the program and
it worked for awhile. Today, however, right-clicking a song again fails to offer those choices.

Which version of Windows are you running? 32-bit or 64-bit?

Please make sure that WMP Plus is still loaded - it should be listed and checked in WMP's Tools - Plug-ins menu (press Ctrl+M if you don't see the Tools menu).

When the menu items don't appear, where exactly in WMP's user interface are you right-clicking a song?

64-Bit. I know it's not guaranteed to work with it, and I wouldn't have said anything if it hadn't worked before, and for a couple of weeks.

Okay, I checked the Tools and it's there, and it was unchecked. I checked the box and decided to answer your last question before taking a look.

It was happening in the Now Playing list pane and in the regular Album screen.

And now that you gave me that info I just reloaded WMP and it's back! Thank you so much for that information. If I have anymore trouble I'll look there first.

I do have another possibly stupid question: Is there a way to turn "Party Shuffle" off altogether? I don't really do playlists.

Thanks again for your quick response and your help.

Just to prevent any misunderstandings, WMP Plus is fully supported and should work fine on 64-bit Windows Vista/7/8.

Unfortunately, it's currently not possible to completely turn off Party Shuffle. This is intentional because the feature is only really active while the Party Shuffle playlist is playing. If you don't need it then you can just ignore this playlist. But one of the next versions of WMP Plus probably won't recreate the Party Shuffle playlist anymore, so then you will be able to just remove the playlist once.

Thank you Tim De Baets for this great plugin. It works great. However, WMP has a really annoying issue with the sorting preferences in its library. The issue is that it does not save a custom sorting preference, so when I close WMP or change the view, it reverts to the default sorting options.
For example, if I’m in the library, in the Album view, and I choose a specific artist, I can see all the albums by that artist sorted alphabetically. I can sort the albums by year if I tick the option “Include release date in default sort order”. The albums are now sorted by release date, from NEWEST to OLDEST. I find this annoying. So if I click on Album column, the albums become sorted from OLDEST to NEWEST. GREAT. Now if I go to another view, say Genre, then go back to Album and choose the artist I was browsing earlier, the albums become sorted from NEWEST to OLDEST again! And this is the case for any other change I make to the sorting. Every time I do a custom sorting (in whichever section of the library) and change the view (or exit WMP), that sorting preference is gone and reverted to the default sorting of WMP.
So, is there a way for the plugin to save and keep these custom sorting preferences? Any chance of an update to include this?
Thanks in advance...

Thank you for the suggestion, but I currently don't have any plans to add such a feature to WMP Plus, mainly because it's not possible for the plug-in to know what the current library view is. If you really want to have a custom sort order for your songs, you could create an auto playlist containing a Sort by condition.

Since installing 2.7  MPP,  WMP is very slow (+15 sec delay) to load/initialise/return input to user on initial load,....and more specifically bringing up the properties for MPP  2.7 plugin is very slow..even a 2nd or 3rd time within same session...

With MPP WMP disabled...no slow down on wmp load....

i had made a custom change in registry  on a earlier version of MPP to change the number of tracks before which MPP stopped showing disc number...in case thats relevant...

WMP 12
Win 7 SP1 64bit

reverting to MPP 2.6...no slow down....

thank you

I went through the changes that were made for version 2.7, but couldn't immediately see anything that could have degraded performance. Are you sure that this isn't happening with version 2.6?

Is it possible that the slowness only occurs when an external program is using WMP, such as Media Center or perhaps something for externally controlling WMP (like from a toolbar)?

With custom registry change, do you mean the IncludeSetMaxItemCount setting? If you set it back to its default value (500), does that help?

i was back on default reg settings anyways as it happens..
there is 100% correlation of slow down / speed up between 2.7..2.6

it is immediate and consistent...dont think its related to external program due to reproducibility of issue...as well as having no knowledge of external program....
i am also using tag plus..

edit
after it being very consistent over 5 installs and uninstalls...its now slow on 2.6...something else is going on..

edit..no it seems that installing 2.6..is not overwriting 2.7 anymore...

Unfortunately, my tests didn't reveal any possible explanation for the slowness that you're experiencing, so I'll need some more info to troubleshoot the issue.

If you completely uninstall both Windows Media Player Plus and WMP Tag Plus, and then only install Windows Media Player Plus 2.7, does the issue still occur?

Do you have any other WMP plug-ins installed? If so, which ones? If you disable or uninstall these, does that help?

Does the issue still occur when booting Windows in Clean Boot mode (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/929135)?

Indeed, I'm aware of issues with Windows Media Player Plus on Windows 8.1 after installation of the latest Windows Updates. Similar issues have already been reported in the WMP Tag Plus forum thread but they affect Windows Media Player Plus as well. I've nailed the issues down to one of these 5 updates, with the first being the most likely one:

KB3039066
KB3035132
KB3046049
KB3035126
KB3035131

I'll release a new version of Windows Media Player Plus that addresses these issues soon. An announcement will be posted here when the new version is available.

That's unfortunately not possible, because there isn't any search functionality in the Windows Media Player Plus! plug-in. All the plug-in does is setting the focus to the Search field when you type the first letter. From then on, the search is handled completely by WMP. If you want to search in lyrics then you should probably use a specialized tool like Mp3tag.

Any possibility to compile a x64 version of the plugin? I prefer x64 player more, because I think it more stable. But now I have to switch to x86 version in order to use the plugin.

I know, this is not the only plugin that doesn't support x64 (e.g. MadVR), but it's better to have an x64 version. That would be convenient.

Not that I know of. I definitely wouldn't recommend it, because when multiple instances write to the library database file at the same time, there's a high risk that the file gets corrupt. The proper way to do this is to run WMP on different user accounts (each with its own library), and to use Fast User Switching.

I just wanted to thank you SO MUCH for the Add disc number option.
I've been using your plugins for so long and I've never noticed it! This was my biggest annoyance with WMP since the vanilla multiple disc suport is so dumb that I had to separate my albums into Album CD1 and Album CD2 resulting in two entries with same artwork
Now I am off to remove those dumb CD1/CD2 suffixes from album names!

May I ask what does that 500 songs limit mean? Is that 500 per album or something? I have more than 500 songs in total and it still works fine.
Title: Windows Media Player Plus! - Various enhancements for WMP
Post by: Tim De Baets on 2015-12-31 20:07:08
That limit applies to the number of songs shown in the current view of the library. So if the current view consists of more than 500 songs (e.g. when selecting the Music category), the disc numbers won't be shown. As long as you don't have a multi-disc album of more than 500 songs, you probably won't even notice this limit.

Ah what a bummer
I have kinda found a solution though. I mean it is nowhere close to what I wanted but it works
In the "Music" view (like artist view, album view etc), typing conductor:NAME (replace NAME with the conductor's name) shows all the titles/songs/compositions of that conductor. It is not a "clean" or "smooth" (lol) process but it works. Do tell me if you know something better

What's your exact Windows 10 version and build number? (press Win+R, type winver, Enter)

What exactly happens when you try the 'restore media' feature? Does anything get restored at all? Are you sure that everything is enabled in Restore Media at Startup in the plug-in's settings?

What's the file type of the music or video file that should be restored?

Any chance of getting a 64-bit release of this awesome plugin?

the 32-bit media player is struggling to play HEVC 4k videos via codecs so in a year or two it will be obsolete.

I would support a 64-bit release in any way I can (am a developer).

No, there are no plans for a 64-bit release. I have little free time left to work on the plug-in, and I prefer to spend it on polishing current features and working on new features.

It seems striking to me if playback of a video would require *that* much memory, even if the video is 4K.

No, there are no plans for a 64-bit release. I have little free time left to work on the plug-in, and I prefer to spend it on polishing current features and working on new features.

It seems striking to me if playback of a video would require *that* much memory, even if the video is 4K.

that is unfortunate. It could be that the LAV filter's x64 codec has been worked on more than the 32-bit variant. Either way there is a clear performance drop with 4k HEVC when played on the 32-bit wmp

Hi, are you using the latest version of WMP Plus, version 2.8?
What's your exact Windows 10 version and build number? (press Win+R, type winver, Enter)
What exactly happens when you try the 'restore media' feature? Does anything get restored at all? Are you sure that everything is enabled in Restore Media at Startup in the plug-in's settings?
What's the file type of the music or video file that should be restored?

Hi,
Yes, I use the 2.8 version. Tried to reinstall but still not works the restore media feature.
Windows 10 version: 1607 (14393.693)
Yes all options enabled. Nothing restored. When I open WMP I see the Media Library and an empty playlist on the right side.
I have mp3 files in my Media Library, but I tried some videos now without success.

I found something: If I save the playlist before close WMP, on next start restores the media and it continuous the last media from the last state. What could be the problem?

Thanks!

In WMP, please go to Tools - Options - Privacy (press Ctrl+M if you don't see the Tools menu). Is the Playlists item near the bottom ticked? If it isn't, tick it and click OK. Does that fix the issue?

Announcement: the beta version of Windows Media Player Plus! 2.10 is now available for download here (http://bmproductions.fixnum.org/links/?linkid=14). This is a bugfix release primarily meant to fix a "Windows Media Player is not installed properly and must be reinstalled" error message in recent Windows 10 Insider Preview builds. Additionally, a compatibility issue with Symantec Endpoint Protection software has been fixed.

As this is a beta version, it’s possible that it still contains some bugs. Please let me know if you encounter any problems, so I can fix them for the final release. Thanks!

Is there any way to sort albums/EPs by date? Currently the best I can do is sort by Year but when an artist has multiple releases in an year, they get sorted by name
Title: Re: Windows Media Player Plus! - Various enhancements for WMP

WMP definitely can't sort tracks by release date - it only takes the year part into account. So I would say that sorting albums by release date isn't possible either.

What if I use custom 1 and 2 tags? Would it be possible then?
If yes then can you tell how do I edit these custom tags. Tag Editor Plus doesn't have the option

Yes, you could use the Custom 1/Custom 2 tags for individual tracks, but not for albums because WMP's Album view doesn't support those columns.

To edit these tags with Tag Editor Plus, go to the Advanced tab, right-click anywhere in the left column, select Add, and select UserCustom1 or UserCustom2. You can also edit these tags just like any other tag in WMP's detailed song view (right-click - Edit).

Awesome job on this addon!  On the topic of album sorting, is it at least possible to have the addon remember the sort order?  I have WMP sort by release year, but every time I open the app, it defaults to descending order.  I prefer ascending (oldest at the top), and would love if WMP Plus! would allow that setting to persist across sessions.  Thoughts?
Title: Re: Windows Media Player Plus! - Various enhancements for WMP
Post by: Tim De Baets on 2018-03-12 11:53:36
Just out of curiosity, how did you set WMP to sort by release year? As far as I know, WMP doesn't just forget the ascending/descending order, but completely restores the default sort order each time, e.g. sorting by album name in Album view.

Unfortunately, I don't have any plans to add a feature that would persist custom sort ordering in WMP.
Title: Re: Windows Media Player Plus! - Various enhancements for WMP
Post by: Gaviin on 2018-03-12 16:05:59
Ah, too bad.  Makes no sense why preferences like that wouldn't persist.  Boo Microsoft.

And sorry, I wasn't clear.  The release year sorting that I was referring to is within Artist view when you click into a specific artist.  That's where I was hoping to retain an ascending sort order instead of the default descending.
Title: Re: Windows Media Player Plus! - Various enhancements for WMP
Post by: Tim De Baets on 2018-03-13 14:41:49
It's still not clear to me where you get this default sorting by release year. When I use WMP 12 on Windows 7 and go to a specific artist in Artist view, the artist's songs are sorted by album.
Title: Re: Windows Media Player Plus! - Various enhancements for WMP
Post by: Gaviin on 2018-03-13 23:40:07
Sorry, apparently I'm not doing a good job communicating.  Going into an artist in Artist view does *group* the artist's songs by album, but the albums themselves are sorted by release year in descending order (most recent first).  The sort order of the songs within each album is by ascending track number, as one would expect.

It's a little strange because if I go into the Organize menu, then Sort by, nothing appears to be selected by default despite the clear sorting by release date.  If I click on "Release date", that's what reverses the sort order of the albums in the view to ascending, which is what I want.

Hope that makes sense.  If this isn't how your WMP works, I'm not sure what would be causing the difference.  Aside from installing your addon, I haven't done anything special in terms of configuration.  I'm running WMP 12 on Windows 10, but doubt that makes a difference.
Title: Re: Windows Media Player Plus! - Various enhancements for WMP
Post by: Tim De Baets on 2018-03-14 18:14:22
Hmm, for me, the albums of a specific artist are always sorted alphabetically. If I then click on the Release *year* column, there's no grouping by album anymore but by year instead. There's no Release *date* column as far as I know. I don't know what could be the difference either...

I've also tried checking Include release date in default sort order (right-click on column and select Choose columns), but that showed the same behavior as sorting by Release year manually. Strange...
Title: Re: Windows Media Player Plus! - Various enhancements for WMP
Post by: Gaviin on 2018-03-15 00:22:12
So weird.  To confirm, I do have Include release date in default sort order checked.  Neither the option above nor below that are checked.

Interestingly, I do not have a separate Release year column despite the fact that Release year is checked in the Choose Columns window, so I don't even have a column to click to quick-sort all the individual tracks by release year as you described.  The columns that display for me are Album (which contains the album art, album name, genre, and release year all together), Track number, Title, Length, Rating, Contributing artist, and Size.

Maybe the order of the checked items in the Choose Columns window has some effect on all this?  If you want to play with that, here's what mine is set to:

x  Album art
x  Track number
x  Title
x  Length
x  Rating
x  Contributing artist
x  Album
x  Genre
x  Release year
   Composer
x  Size
   Parental rating
   Album artist
x  Action

And the rest are unchecked.

Now it's clear to me: WMP also has a view mode that can be changed using the little arrow next to the Search field. I was in the Details view mode, while you're in Expanded tile mode according to your description.

After changing my view mode to Expanded tile, I indeed see the same behavior as you describe. Mystery solved :)

A small sidenote to make here, is that in Expanded tile mode, when there are tracks in a single album with a different Release year, then the album will be shown as multiple entries, each containing the tracks for a particular Release year.

WASAPIs allow the player to bypass the Windows mixer, allowing bit-exact output to the sound device (e.g., an AVR connected by HDMI) and muting all other sounds. ASIO is similar.

Important note about Windows 10: in more recent versions of Windows 10 (more specifically, since the April 2018 Update), there's a new setting in WMP called Write media information changes to files. By default, this setting is turned *off*, which means that any tag changes made in WMP won't be written back to file. This also applies to changes made with Tag Editor Plus, so it's highly recommended to turn that setting on - it can be found in Tools - Options - Library (press Ctrl+M if you don't see the Tools menu).

I've also created a FAQ page (http://bmproductions.fixnum.org/wiki/FAQ_(Windows_Media_Player_Plus!)) for Windows Media Player Plus! and have put this same info there.

I haven't checked, but it's pretty safe to assume that it doesn't. WMP has never written play counts to file. The option only applies to info that WMP used to write to file by default.

Hello Tim.
I’ve used the plugin on many machines in the past and it always worked as it should.
Now, I’ve started using it on a new desktop pc (win 10), and the “restore media at startup feature” is not working. If I’m playing a song and I close wmp, then open it, the playlist name changes to playlist 3, but the song that was playing doesn’t show up there.
I have k-lite codec pack installed, and i set wmp as default for all audio formats.
I tried uninstalling and reinstalling the plugin to no success. Other features (like name on the taskbar, find as you type...) are working normally.
Any ideas or suggestions?

Thank you so much! Ticking the playlists option fixed it :D
I also second the request to turn party shuffle off. Mainly because i like to keep my WMP library empty, but that causes an error (party shuffle playlist cannot be created...) to pop up every time i run WMP.

Do you mean that you're applying some specific tricks to keep your library empty? If so, which ones?

Could you also provide the full text of that error message, so I can take a look? Note that you can press Ctrl+C while the error dialog is in focus to copy its contents.
Title: Re: Windows Media Player Plus! - Various enhancements for WMP
Post by: mcbm24 on 2019-11-07 06:46:09
I go to File -> Manage libraries -> Music, and make sure the locations included don't have any music files (by default, Users\%USERNAME%\Music is included, and i don't keep any files there, so no problem with that).
I also go to Options, then under Player i untick the option "Add local media files to library when played".
This keeps my library empty.
Now i went to the device that was showing the error (it's a new laptop) and opened WMP (first time in over a week). I found 2 songs in my library. Turns out i hadn't unticked that option, so i must've played the 2 songs and that's why they were added to the library. I deleted them from the library, deleted the party shuffle playlist, and basically reset everything. Now when i open wmp, i don't get that error anymore (that said something like party shuffle playlist cannot be created). Instead, an empty party shuffle playlist gets created. I have no clue how this happened! If i ever manage to reproduce the error, i'll post back here.

Title: Re: Windows Media Player Plus! - Various enhancements for WMP

When the plug-in doesn't appear then that probably means that you're running the 64-bit version of WMP's executable file (wmplayer.exe), because the plug-in only supports the 32-bit version.

You should be able to resolve this by making sure that you're running C:\Program Files (x86)\Windows Media Player\wmplayer.exe (and *not* wmplayer.exe in C:\Program Files\Windows Media Player, which is 64-bit).

Im running the 32bit version. An observation after some fiddling around: i had a shortcut to close media player via the closeProcess system command. That's equivalent to going in task manager and force closing wmp
Turns out in win10 if that happens all Plugins are uninstalled

Then I assume that you added the space bar as a global (system-wide) hotkey in the plug-in's settings? That's indeed not such a good idea :) Instead of adding it on the Global Hotkeys tab in settings, go to the Local Hotkeys tab and tick the checkbox there to use the space bar to play/pause while WMP is in focus.

I have installed the enhanced version of WMP - however what I would like to do is to run wmp from a VB6 program,  thereby playing a song, then at the end of the song, I want to automatically close wmp and return to the VB6 program.    At present I am running wmp as the default player as below

Retval = ShellExecute(hwnd, "open", PlayFile, "", "", SW_SHOWNORMAL)

This  plays the song but does not close wmp.   I guess what I need to know is - how to run wmp using the app's exe file , playing the song and then closing wmp down - what are the switches that I need to use in order to do this ?    Indeed is this possible, I can see how to close after the song by a manual intervention, but I may as well just click to close wmp at the end anyway !

Running Win10pro and WinMediaPlayer 12.0.19041.4170
It appears to be the 64 bit version.

With WMP 2.4 and 3.0 beta, the install isn't persistent: on the next run of WMP, the plugin isn't there.

Note that I have something installed in my system called "windows media player 64-bit plugin fix"  Why?  It installed itself somehow when I installed your plugin.  Is this part of your install bundle???
Title: Re: Windows Media Player Plus! - Various enhancements for WMP

Windows Media Player Plus! only supports the 32-bit version of WMP. The installer will always run the 32-bit version. When you then launch WMP yourself you're most likely launching the 64-bit version. To fix this, make sure that you're launching the version in C:\Program Files (x86)\Windows Media Player (the 64-bit version, on the other hand, is located in C:\Program Files\Windows Media Player).

Windows Media Player 64-bit Plug-in Fix was indeed installed together with older versions of my WMP plug-ins. This was a fix for 32-bit-only plug-ins inadvertently getting disabled when running the 64-bit version of WMP. This fix has since been incorporated into another component of my plug-ins, so the entry in Apps & features can be safely uninstalled.

Thanks, Tim, for the quick response!

Yes, the 32-bit version behaves properly. But...

I went into the registry and pointed all the keys that refer to wmplayer to the 32 bit version.  There were maybe a dozen keys that wouldn't let me change them (presumably, some sort of security thing)...but when I double-click on an audio file, windows still runs the 64 bit version.

I then went to the default-applications system settings, and there is only one item shown for WMP -- and it points to the 64 bit version.

Do you have any idea how to resolve this double-click-on-the-mp3-file problem?
Title: Re: Windows Media Player Plus! - Various enhancements for WMP

You could try right-clicking on an MP3 file and selecting Open with. Then first tick Always use this app to open .mp3 files. Then click on More apps, scroll down and click Look for another app on this PC, and select the 32-bit wmplayer.exe.

If that doesn't help, you could also try changing the file association manually with the FileTypesMan (https://www.nirsoft.net/utils/file_types_manager.html) tool.

Hi Tim,
Thanks again for your swift response and ideas.  Just for completeness:
Open with>More Apps>Look for another app>select 32-bit version ... unfortunately, windows gets confused and still uses the 64 bit version.
Use FileTypesMan ... it gives an access-denied error, guess this is locked down in the registry by MSFT.  Grrrr...will see if I can override there.

Hi Tim,
Thanks again for your swift response and ideas.  Just for completeness:

Use FileTypesMan ... it gives an access-denied error, guess this is locked down in the registry by MSFT.  Grrrr...will see if I can override there.
OK, so here's what not to do... , I went through the registry and changed every key in the registry pointing to WMP, directing it to the 32 bit version rather than 64...there were a dozen or so that could not be changed due to permissions.  Tried WMP and it was still running the 64 bit version.  Then went through the keys that were locked down, changed the permissions / ownership so I could change those keys as well.  All I did was succeed in breaking WMP altogether ("class not registered").  Obviously a typo in one of my registry changes.  As WMP is a "windows feature" and not an uninstallable application, I couldn't do an automated repair.  So I disabled the feature, then re-enabled it (which does an uninstall/reinstall).

WMP works again, but back to square one--it still points to the 64 bit version.

So I go to chatGPT and after about 5 versions of the question, it finally suggests a method that works:

Navigate to C:\Program Files (x86)\Windows Media Player.
    Create a shortcut
    Cut the shortcut you created.
    Navigate to C:\Program Files (x86)\.
Create a new folder named "Media Player" or any suitable name.
Paste the shortcut into this new folder.
    Update file association:
        Right-click on any MP3 file.
Select "Open with" > "Choose another app."
Click on "always use this app to open .mp3 files."
Scroll through list and Click on "More apps."
Scroll down and select "Look for another app on this PC."
Navigate to C:\Program Files (x86)\Media Player.
Select the shortcut you created (named wmplayer.exe).
Click "OK" to set it as the default program.

Good to hear that you were finally able to find a solution. For what it's still worth:

Use FileTypesMan ... it gives an access-denied error, guess this is locked down in the registry by MSFT.  Grrrr...will see if I can override there.
In FileTypesMan, you can select Help - Run As TrustedInstaller. Then you should be able to change the file association without an "access denied" error.
