Replaygain Source mode: By playback order

Hi, So as I understand it, setting Replaygain Source mode to "by playback order" is the new normal (default), rather than Source mode set to album? That is, for normal listening, this works no matter if I listen to albums, tracks, shuffle or random playback; is this correct? As well, this now alleviates the need for foo_rg_trn?

Thanks.

correct. "by playback order" will automatically use ALBUM RG values if playing tracks from same album back to back and use TRACK RG if playing a mixture of tracks from different albums.  I use this mode, but can't recall whether it is selected by default.  I know I have it selected in preferences in my own use case.

Thanks for confirming that for me. Shouldn't Replaygain default to "By playback order" rather than 'Album'?

Why? If some song is quiet then it's probably quiet on purpose, isn't it? Why should it be loud when shuffle/random mode is active?

That's an almost philosophical/existential question, so much so that I was compelled to answer despite it being such an old thread.
Well, I'm dealing with ReplayGain atm, so that's also a reason.

What you say makes sense for tracks that are specifically meant to be quiet (= not just quieter than the rest of the album, but quiet in an absolute way). Which happens more often in classical music but not only.
But by having Album as default source, even tracks that aren't specifically meant to be absolutely quiet would play at a quieter volume than if the Track Gain would be used, somehow partially negating the whole purpose of ReplayGain.

So, it seems that the choice is between playing quieter track a bit louder or normal tracks a bit quieter, when using shuffle or mixed playlists.
I can't think of a solution to this dilemma.
The only solution I can think about is to manually modifying the Track Gain value of each of those "born to be quiet" tracks that we want to be played at the Album Gain value.
Or maybe someone will make a ReplayGain scanner which has the option to set a threshold under which a track has to be considered "intentionally quiet", and for these tracks the album gain should be used as track gain.

I'm not sure though how many people would consider such feature necessary.
From what I see, most people are happy enough with either playing all at Album value or at Track value and coping with the tradeoff.

Essentially ALBUM RG does keep "intentionally quiet" songs quieter than normal (as compared with TRACK RG).  TRACK RG used to be called Radio mode (as in, every song you hear on the radio has the same basic volume level).   I personally use "smart RG" in my players. It automatically uses TRACK gain if playing a mixture of tracks from different albums or album gain if playing songs from same album.
