EAC or ASUS BW-12B1ST overburned on my CD, damaging it

I'm not sure whether it was EAC or my ASUS BW-12B1ST (no firmware replacement, stock), but I've used it before with no issues, albeit it has been a while..

Today I put a new CD in to rip, and proceeded to start the "Detect Gaps" function as normal first. It sat on track 1 for very long time . I listened to the drive and it was making a lot of squeaking noises. Then I heard a very VERY bad reader sound come from the drive.

I then took the disc out and literally half a centimeter of the beginning track looks like it has been overburned, effectively permanently ruining the CD. What the hell?

How is this possible? I figure the firmware would prevent this from happening? Is my drive bad? Have people found their EAC malfunctioning on Windows 10 too? I'm at a loss. I'm not sure I want to put other discs in this drive. But I'm not sure if EAC is the culprit here.

I should add that this is a copy-protected disc. Writing shouldn't even be possible.

My thoughts, the 'burn' is probably a 'scrape'. The CD was out of balance, improperly loaded, or there is a failure within the drive that allowed the area of the CD to make contact with another surface inside the drive while it was spinning.

I wondered that too, but the plastic isn't damaged. It's in the actual underside of the label. The way the light reflects proves it.

Was that a "homemade" CD?   You can't "burn" a commercially pressed CD.

I think it is clear that OP was trying to rip CD, not "burn". And then CD literally burned. Like burned with fire.

Correct. I am ripping a mass-produced copy-protected CD that just released by a major label. A label I'm pretty sure would have Sony manufacture the CD. I cannot explain it. The disc opened up in EAC perfectly fine initially, but once I initiated the gap detection, it just went to shit. I could hear squeaking noises coming from my disc drive that clearly sounded wrong. It sounded like the laser was moving vigorously.

If the drive really did damage the CD using excessive laser output, it's time to contact ASUS customer support.

Your drive may be faulty, so don't put any discs in it that you wouldn't be able to replace.

The copy protection on the CD may have triggered a bug in the drive firmware. If you buy a replacement CD, you might want to avoid PC disc drives until you're sure that wasn't it. (I'd suggest avoiding similar drives only, but it's hard to tell which drives are similar since ASUS doesn't manufacture their own drives.)

Maybe as korth said something in the drive physically damaged the disc, but on the top side where data is actually pressed. Bottom is just a translucent plastic.

The top label is perfectly fine. It was just the underside of the label. It very clearly looks like a laser overburned it.

You know what. My brain forgot that the first track is on the inside of the disc, Not the outside. Still, it will not read in anything so maybe there was a manufacturing flaw or my drive is just damaged. False alarm I guess. Big oof. I already ordered a replacement drive and have this CD being returned for a replacement.

Yep probably the drive is dead.
