Ubuntu Set Up for Bit Perfect Output?

What are the set up steps for getting bit perfect output from Ubuntu Natty Narwhal (11.4)? I intend to run it on an Old Asus EEE Box (Intel Atom chip) that I have lying around. Output will be via the Toslink digital output. I will be using it mainly as a headless unit physically hooked up to my DAC. Music player can be MPD, Banshee or Rhythmbox, or whatever will allow me to remotely control it from an iphone/ipad or Mac laptop. I did try to do a google search but most of the info out there is confusing and often also very old.

Thanks.

Sincerely,

Hany.
