General Audio / Re: Newb Question - is it better to conver Mod Files to FLAC or MP3?

doesn't mean that you should get warnings while transcoding to FLAC that it won't be lossless because it doesn't support float32
Yes you should. You should get warned when trying to encode lossily into a lossless format.
It doesn't matter that the loss is inaudible - encoding lossless is supposed to be just that (lossless), and if the user wants to downconvert, let them override.

The screenshots make it look like a difference in how fb2k displays them. In that case it is fb2k-specific.

Obvious first debugging to see if there is something odd about the files:
* Make a new folder with copies of the WavPack files
* wvunpack them
* open the unpacked .dsf in fb2k, ffmpeg -i them ... to check for anything suspicious
* WavPack them with 5.0 and with the newest 5.5 and check that 5.0 and 5.5 look the same in fb2k for each file. (First shot: just drag and drop them onto wavpack.exe - it won't use the "high", but it is good to check.)

Wow what are DAWs doing here, man, you're making things more confusing than they already are.

It really is very simple:
Most music sources (like CDs) and listening hardware is 16bit. That you encode to lossy format like MP3 which is floating point internally, doesn't mean that you should get warnings while transcoding to FLAC that it won't be lossless because it doesn't support float32, nor should you play it back at 32bits, nor should you have info in Properties dialog that MP3 is 32bit. And you don't.

It even more applies to legacy MODs and derivatives, which mostly come from 8bit hardware and contain 8bit samples. That one gets a warning while transcoding to FLAC that it won't be lossless because it doesn't support 32bits, or that Properties say that MOD is 32bit, is a design fault of plugin or fb2k.

Sure we can share to normal people additional knowledge that some module formats support DSP, are synth capable, may benefit from internal float32 processing, or that there even are tracker-derived DAWs like Renoise where 32bits might be worthwhile for further mixing, but the main message is simple:

There's no point in converting MODs to lossless formats at bit-depths higher than 16.

General Audio / Re: 16 bits is more than enough

An experimental format I made previously. Not really floating point but some sort of log approximation, with 8 or 12 bits quantization.
https://hydrogenaud.io/index.php/topic,121181.msg1005031.html#msg1005031

Half-float contains negative zero, infinity and NaN, so in practice the usable values are fewer than 16-bit integer.

The range of values are not the same but the total number of distinct value possible is the same.

For integer format: 2**32 = 4,294,967,296

For real, float, fixed, etc.. whatever the (sign, expo, etc..) layout:

fraction => 2**24 = 16,777,216
expo => 2**8 = 256

fraction * expo = 4,294,967,296 like for a int32 ou uint32

Windows Explorer does not handle ID3v2.4 or APE tags in mp3?

Try the big slash.

Also, beware that e.g. foobar2000 treats slashes in
ALBUMARTISTSORTORDER <--- fb2k's preferred!
ALBUM ARTIST SORT <--- written by Mp3tag, but will be changed by fb2k if you change any tag in fb2k
different.

Yes! in the app it shows correctly, but when I am trying to see it in the Windows app, it still shows as K;DA, no matter what i do :( I tried the other one with the BADDEST (APE) to see if it worked out, but no -.-. in Windows folder shows as noting.

Ugggh, is it just impossible?
