How do i make an album by various artists appear as a single album? I have added the "Album Artist" column and entered the "%album artist%" in the display field. But when i try to arrange albums that have various artists through this column, they appear next to one another but spread out, and i want them to be grouped. Under the artist field i have the correct name of each artist, and under Album artist i have "Various artists". This works on itunes, but not here on foobar.
Any help?

in the Default user interface in Preferences, Custom Grouping Schemes, add new, fill the pattern as %album% and name whatever.
I use Columns UI so I haven't tested this, but it should work.
Make sure you're using %album artist% for the grouping? If no album artist tag is found, this defaults back to %artist%, so it works well.

Wouldn't that end up grouping many albums of the same album artist together?
Yes, I guess so, so you should also add %album%... I forgot that I use 2 groupings on top of eachother, one for %album artist% and one for %album%. Oh and i use CUI but I don't think it really changes much between this and DUI...
I also set it up so that if the %album artist% is Various Artists, it shows the %artist% tag after the title, like this:

Cool. I just add a new column, haven't thought of that. I guess I'll just steal it for myself
Well i dont understand of what you've said so far nothing so far
I use Colums UI, and i have set the "Album Artist" column and i have entered the "[%album artist%]" under display. And when i want to arrange albums by album artist, this is how the songs of one compilation look like:

This is one album called "Five years of hyperdub", by different artists. If i tag this as by various artists, then i wont be able to know by whom each song is. This is why i want to arrange them by album artist.
I am new to foobar customizing, so please be as simple as possible.
Thanks
First think of some combination of tags that will be the same per album and different when the album changes. Then use it as a group string.

So i have to make some changes on the albums tags? Not the columns? Well these songs have the same genre, same label, so how could make a combinations so they appear as a group?

Try this:

After that, sort by albums if they're still separated.
Bryter, here is how grouping works:
For every single track a string is generated, according to the grouping scheme. Tracks are grouped together if and only if these strings are equal. So the very first task, when you want to get some desired gruoping, is to find out what combination of tags you should use in the grouping scheme such that the grouping is done as you want it. You can do this completely without a computer, assuming your files are properly tagged. After you have found such a tag combination you can formulate the actual grouping scheme.

Try this:
I am having another problem regarding the arrangement of albums. This time its from one artist, and i have chosen to arrange it by artist album. Under grouping i have entered these values: %album artist%[ / %album%][ / %discnumber%]
And this is how the tags look for this album (and the artist album column specifications):

I have entered all the right tags. Yet , it is not showing as a group.
Thanks to anyone who can help.
Grouping by discnumber seems to be the problem here.
Also, why would you need an album artist tag for a single artist album?
Actually the main main problem was that those songs were not grouped together in the right way in folders (in windows). I grouped them properly, and then removed some unnecessary tags, and now its working properly.
Didn't know that foobar cares how you store the songs on folders...

It don't cares unless you told it to.
disc one and disc two in your screenshot were unsorted and
you told foobar to display by %discnumber%...
Also the unnecessary tag removing might have had an impact
on your grouping too.
Try using %BAND% instead of %album artist%.
