Title: New Foobar Logo
Post by: Luceo D'Martis on 2008-03-19 01:39:26
Here is a quick and simple re-design of foobar's logo for Peter Pawlowski's consideration. If interested, Contact me and I can provide the original PDF, no strings attached. Cheers.

Wow, that's actually quite nice. The only thing I would suggest is that the ears are a little too tall. I think they should be shortened a bit. Not lengthening the face, mind you, but shortening the ears, such that the whole shape becomes more square.

I wouldn't mind having a copy just to make icons with for personal use.

Funny, was thinking the same and was already in the process of modification. The revised version does look better in my opinion. I entered another with a slightly tighter frame.

Wow, that actually looks pretty awesome. The middle one with the shortened ears, and more round head is the one I perfer. Good job .

I like the middle one as well. Good work.

Indeed, the middle one is excellent. The only other thing I might do is move the eyes and mouth up a bit (maybe just the eyes) because the forehead seems a bit large. Not a big deal though.

Here it is. Took the middle one and made the eyes slightly larger and the frame just a tad tighter so that the forehead appears better proportioned. Heres hoping that it actually gets adopted into the next update. Also, I always thought the little detail was a nose, not a mouth.

Can anyone here reproduce the current icons foobar has using this logo? I would do it myself, but I am already knee deep in other projects. I just made this logo because it was a quick deal. I would appreciate a copy, of coarse.

Anyways, let me know via PM, give me your e-mail and I will provide the PNG.

Sorry when I first saw this I must think of BATMAN because of the ears. the head looks a bit like the head of a bat in my opinion.

I agree with the Batman likeness, but is that a bad thing? What exactly does a foobar look like or supposed to look like?

We wont know if it scales well unless someone actually tries.

Will everything with pointy ears forever allude to the batman? Here is a sketch I made, compare for yourself.

Taking the criticism (albeit not in the bit least constructive) into consideration I decided to redesign further, assuming that the changes I made were those my critics were alluding to, I think you will be pleased with the results, I know I am.

Also, I realize I can't please everyone, but I can at least try to accommodate. So from now on, if anyone has any input be sure its constructive so that I can work with it. Just take a look at Emon's posts, for examples of good constructive criticism. Anyways, here is the latest result. Enjoy.

Good stuff. But the 32x32 below is too smoothed, the small icons need a cleaner/sharper design. They're imporatnt, because I really don't use monster icons even in vista.

I agree, I believe the design should not be outlined. The outline may look good with bigger designs, but it becomes too complex when scaled down. That goes for the word MP3 as well.

I am almost positive this will take care of the problem.

Another note, the Icon should try to take up as much space as it can in the icon box, this will also help.

Excellent work!

I prefer the current logo of foobar over your new layouts.

But as long as you offer them on a plugin-basis I have no problems with that ;-)

I think it wouldn't hurt to try some other new icons, eejadx made some really nice tango style ones. I like to new ones that come standard as well, and I like the look of this new one as well. If you're allowed too, i would keep on working on them. Foobar does support alot of codecs. Probably take sometime making all those  Anyway, nice work (Keikonium, and Luceo D'Martis)

One advantage, which is noticable with this design though, is that the cat-head scales better to lower sizes, simply because it is wider than the official one. So even if the decisionmakers of the official design do not like this one, they may take this advantage as an inspiration on how to make the official logo scale better at small sizes.

Even if this does not become the official icon, i would still like to see this followed through like others have done in the past. You can use them at will.

I created another scale example. This time, with a few tweaks (mostly pixels and such) as well as using the latest logo. I also disabled the border on the smaller icons so they didn't look as cramped.

The two 48x48 icons: The first one is WITH a border, and the second one is WITHOUT a border. I personally perfer the one WITH a border.

I am thinking about using a pixel font on the smallest icons... but I have yet to see how it might look.

Any suggestions for improvements? Changes?

I think, the 16x16 should probably be just the head like foobars standard ones. I think that looks best. I like the without border one, (i got bad eye sight) but i can barely tell the difference.

The readability of "mp3" could be better on the 32x32 icon. I think another font could help there.

That font is terrible. Use something closer to Helvetica.
Title: New Foobar Logo
Post by: Lyx on 2008-03-23 01:14:14
i think that the font looks okay on the big icons (could be a little bit smaller vertically though), but it doesn't scale well to low sizes - something more "plain" would indeed be more readable at small sizes.

Any font face suggestions? After all, I want something that everyone is going to like, so user input is the best in this case I think.

I have done up these three prototypes that each use a different font. I think that the "mini" font looks good:

(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v326/keikonium/foobar/icons/newfont1scale.png)(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v326/keikonium/foobar/icons/newfont2scale.png)

The mini is the the easiest to read at 16x16 out of the three, but it is the least attractive on a big scale, in my opinion. The Swis721 is my pick, as it is highly  readable as well as simple. However, I still think the icon could cover more negative space. Perhaps half of the free space on either vertical end? By doing this the icon should also cover more of the horizontal space. One last suggestion, could we change the brown to black? Perhaps that will contrast the white font further, augmenting its readability.

I couldn't tell you what it will look like, but theres no harm in trying.

I have to agree with you about the fonts on second look. I can try to disabled the smoothing on the Swis font at smaller sizes and see if that helps readability. I don't know about others, but I use the color of the icon to tell the difference between codecs, so the readability at those smaller sizes isn't that big a deal since I use color anyways.

I can try and make the icon wider. I just don't want it looking like a square. I'll see what I can do.

The "brown" isn't there with all icons. Its actually black, with opacity that shows through the background color of the icon. As you can see in these older versions below:
.

EDIT:

Here is the icon wider, and I slightly darkened the "brown"-ness at the bottom. I think it looks okay, but maybe too square?

Better, but I think you use too much anti-aliasing for the font outlines so that they look unsharp or blurry. They lack the crispness that can be found in icons. I also would recommend to stick to a more standard font as they are very well balanced. I would suggest Calibri, Helvetica/Arial or Tahoma.

The "squared" suggestion looks fat to me.

Overall I look forward to the result

Your icons look good, however I think the smaller ones could use a more defined border around the icon itself. The bigger icons have a nice visible border but the smaller ones are more of a blur.

Thanks for the nice comments. I can't release them though. I haven't heard from Luceo. However i have been working on another icon. My DeviantArtWebpage (http://activethoughts.deviantart.com/art/Foobar2000-Icon-File-Types-P-88021375)
It's just a preview, but it looks fine in vista. I tried that tango style colors, but i found it hard for myself (since i'm not that good) to use those limited colors for all those file types.
If those icons aren't that great i am sorry, they are just going to be an alternative to the other ones available.
I would like to see someone come up with yet another foobar2000 alient cat logo.

Luceo's shiny icons look excellent. But black shadow with a black face makes it look blurry.. Maybe try to use bright shadow on all icons with black faces (like in FLAC)
You should probably move some effects on a 16x16 version. the text should be readable too, of course. The smallest icon might even not need the alien face at all.
oh, and the small cute mouth looks well... cute.
BTW, are you doing the icons with a raster editor (photoshop and similar) or a vector editing program (Inkscape, Illustrator)?

hah, I'm already beginning to see the old foobar logo as a legacy icon , even when it stays as the default one. because Luceo's version of the alien face looks much more modern

Activethoughts - i don't like the stroke and the exaggerated gloss on your icon, plus the file format should be on the 16x16 icon too. And with your chosen background, the text (fb2k) should be white (or at least brighter).

16x16 icons have the alien cat, no letters at all. Check the default icons.

There is no place on 16x16 to efficiently display file format text - dropping it is exactly the right thing to do IMO. But i agree that the gloss is exaggerated.

Title: New Foobar Logo
Post by: ingver on 2008-07-10 19:17:55
of course... what was i thinking... naturally there's no need to put file format text to 16x16 files.. who needs to know the exact format of the files in list (or equivalent) view. and if there's no format text, you'll have room for the cat.

what about little shadows under the icons.. not the 16x16 but the bigger ones. It should make a nice addition.. or is that too much? Most of the icons have some sort of shadow, these icons would fit right in.

16x16 is large enough to display 3 characters of text reasonably effectively. I would think it would be more sensible to display the extension than the aliencat, however gorgeous Luceo's design is.

I don't know, i for some reason still think the mouth is too small. However i do like Luceo's design a lot. Mine was just a sample of the mouth, that is all it was intended for. Not as a replacement of his actual design i think most people got that correct.

The purpose of most 16x16 icons isn't to give "explicit" information, but to just visually make various filetypes distinguishable (i.e., to see where a new group begins, if one sorts by filetype). I encourange people with lots of time, to try an explicit approach - just to actually test it, instead of just estimating it - but i myself am sceptic that it will work out well - by the way... you did consider, that those 16x16 icons may get SCALED further, by apps, in some scenarios, right?

I agree with you on this. The black face, is related to (lossless audio codecs) and the white face is (lossy codecs, and or general file type related icons, playlist's etc...) And color makes it distinguishable face color, and overall icon color.

Hi there!

Wonderful icons! Because I couldn't wait until you release the finished set, I already made my own based on your "beta" versions, which leads to my nexts question: As many people here seem to be quite anxious for these icons, i wanted to ask if i could post my set here?
Of course the full credits belong to you, as the icons are heavily based an yours, as I said.

Sure, why not? You can always edit your post later and remove them. HOWEVER you can NOT release them until you get Luceos' permission to release his logo design with your design. But a screen shot, would be nice for the time being.

OK, here's the sreenshot:

Well, these icons are surely quite nice, but not quite usable for all filetypes... If I am not mistaken, the icons are made for the usage in docks... Furthermore, there are only 2 icons in the pack, but to cover all filetypes many more are needed...

Hey sorry for the slow updates guys, the last thing I really need is the CDA, the 16x16, which have to be made separately without the file-type bar at the bottom to render correctly, and of coarse the program icon itself. Once I am completely done I will make .ico's out of them, and post them for everyone to enjoy.

Looks nice on the first sight... on the second I would think that the CD looks distorted, which is I suggest is an optical illusion caused by those two circles overlapping each other...

Yeah, it might be an optical illusion. However, I don't think at icon size that will be an issue.

Post by: bb10 on 2008-07-23 01:22:34
This is all I could find

The full set of standard icon sizes which should be provided for full Windows Vista compatibility:

  1. 256×256, 32-bit color, PNG compressed
  2. 256×256, 8-bit color, PNG compressed
  3. 256×256, 4-bit color, PNG compressed
  4. 48×48, 32-bit color, uncompressed
  5. 48×48, 8-bit color, uncompressed
  6. 48×48, 4-bit color, uncompressed
  7. 32×32, 32-bit color, uncompressed
  8. 32×32, 8-bit color, uncompressed
  9. 32×32, 4-bit color, uncompressed
  10. 16×16, 32-bit color, uncompressed
  11. 16×16, 8-bit color, uncompressed
  12. 16×16, 4-bit color, uncompressed

This should be in each ico file.

Never made icons either and I have 2 left hands when it comes to art.  But you can probably open the current foobar files in icon workshop and see how they are made or at least what they contain.

Its not that simple. I made two sets. One is meant for the 48x48 and 32x32's and the other for the 24x24 and 16x16 which don't have the black bar in the bottom. How do I make the icons switch from the 48/32's to the 24/16's when you switch to list view in windows?

The current Foobar Icons do that.

Hope I wasn't too confusing.

png2ico (http://www.winterdrache.de/freeware/png2ico/) - console app targeted at favicon generation, but I believe it will do multiple size png -> one ico'
Paint.NET (http://www.getpaint.net/) with the Icon, Cursor and Animated Cursor plugin (http://paintdotnet.forumer.com/viewtopic.php?f=16&t=1152) - Full raster image editing program

Here it is. I still couldn't figure out how to apply the 16x16 set I had to the current icons though. I had a specially made set that featured only the face, which made it scale well at 16x16. If anyone can figure out how it is you combine the two please let me know.

nice set, i can't seem to find WavPack icon, wv
and frog, should be renamed to ofr , just to let people know
could you also make a la, (lossless audio) icon too?
edit: as for the icon for the main program you just right click on the icon on your desktop , then go to properties and the select shortcut tab, and then change icon, and browse for that icon you wish to have.

I added the wv, seems I had forgot it. I also renamed the frog to ofr. Now I need to make an fth, but if I can get the icon itself minus the logo I can manage that easily. Lastly, what does a LA look like?

A few comments:

1) the highlight on your user pic looks way better than the highlight on these icons; the highlight/sheen/whatever on the icons looks really out-of-place. Some don't even have it!

2) the MP2/MP3 icons have a completely different-looking gradient than the others

3) (edit: not used to round, sorry  )

The aliencat looks awesome, Luceo, but in terms of overall polish, I quite prefer your previous edition (http://www.hydrogenaudio.org/forums/index.php?s=&showtopic=62001&view=findpost&p=575684).

Thats what I have been talking about. I did a specially made set just for 16x16 without the bar at the bottom. Thats why I was asking people how to incorporate them with the regular .ico's
Title: New Foobar Logo
Post by: Sounds Blast on 2008-07-27 05:02:05
oh, well i would assume you can do the following, use the original file you made for the 16x16 design and use your icon creator/editor and copy and paste it over the existing 16x16 file and it should then scale it's self down to 16x16, and to the correct color bits.Example, 16x16 32 bits, then you should be able to delete your regular 16x16 and paste your new one instead in your icon creator and should be 16x16 32 bits. Then repeat process for the rest of the bits, 8, 4. (sorry if that doesn't sound clear, i do it very easily)sorry for the misunderstanding. Or you could import new image into the icon, and select that FILE you have specially made for the NEW 16x16, and you should be able to choose, size, and color bits.Still requires deleting your existing (old 16x16 one) for the NEW one to take the 16x16 place(works just as good)

I do it the same as SmilerSmiles also. I highly recommend Axialis. It supports vista, mac, and xp icons, at many sizes. And you can export into different image formats.

Also, it supports .psd if I'm not mistaken. Great program.

well luceo.. i think you should should do as SmilerSmiles shows here..
I can't really explain anything cause i don't know what kind of software do you use (Axialis iconworkshop and PS?)
I use Aicon (supports PSD too) and Inkscape.. so the process of making a 16x16 icon out of bigger sizes is different then in raster programs.
what i can tell is that you should make the 16x16 icons (once the black bar has been removed) a bit wider.. i made them thin at first but as i later found out - they don't scale so well and look too small. 16x16 icons should look more like squares and fill as much space as possible. since 16 x 16 pixels is already quite small
Oh and one thing more.. Perhaps don't make the outer borders complete black. imo it would look better when the icons had a dark red, dark blue, dark green strokes..
But i guess you have already done the new versions of 16x16 icons and just want to import them to your complete icons. -)

Activethoughts - i think you were clear enough

Download them here (http://flo.ge8.de/foobar_icons.zip)

Of course, all icons are included in the set, not only the ones shown in the image above... The CDA and main icon are directly taken from Luceo's set, the others are self-made.

Sorry missed those. on my system i have the icons set to 96x96 and yours look very pixelated at that size.

Given that both of these icons sets are supposed to originate from Luceo's designs, I'm confused about the differences present.

In XP's "Tile" view (48x48) I prefer SmilerSmiles' icons; however the sheen is totally different to Luceo's avitar and Blackash's icons (an issue previously raised by Canar IIRC).

I prefer Blackash's at 16x16.

SmilerSmiles has more icons: 28 over 27.  Blackash has no SPX icon or LA icon, and TTA is misnamed TTK.  Can't currently see what additional icon he has...  SmilerSmiles' LA icon doesn't really look like part of the set (no sheen visible).

Dunno, just seems like there should be a definitive set, rather than two (or more) interpretations of Luceo's work...

OK, I just downloaded Luceo's last version and read his response to Canar's remark.  It looks like Blaskash's icons are based on the old sheen and SmilerSmiles' on the new.  I still can't help wondering why some icons have the sheen and some don't.  It looks to me as though there are at least three different sheens there (aac, ape, mp3).

I'm sorry for appearing negative, it just seems to me as though the hard work by everyone is a little "misplaced" at the moment.  I'd like to see a more cohesive conclusion to this project.

Well, the reason for the differences is quite simple: I didn't actually USE Luceo's icons. I made my icons myself after looking at Luceo's "drafts". Therefore, a difference in appearance is obvious.
Oh, thanks for letting me know about the typo in the icon set, I'll fix that ASAP.

OK, thanks for the info.  I do much prefer the sheen on your icons, and the width and clarity of the 16x16 versions.  An updated FPL FTH would be nice.

Edit: Also, I much prefer the file size of your set, which is more in tunes with the original icons.  250KB for an icon seems a little steep.  I don't know how much effort it would be - once the definitive set has been agreed (if that is likely to happen) - to release an XP version, with limited sizes...

Thanks a million, Luceo. Your work on the aliencat pic is phenomenal, and I'm glad to see that others are picking up the torch. Hopefully we'll have some awesome icons shortly.

Here is something I've been working on. It scales really well, and has it's own 16x16 icon for those who like clearer small icons. Thoughts?

Way better, Keikonum! I really dig your version, if you could make one pack with all filetypes (maybe even with AIFF/AC3/DTS, all same as WAV/Generic) I would be highly pleased!
(...I just can't decide if I would like to have the light in the background of the font on the top or bottom... top looks a bit 'round' which I dislike. luceo had it on the bottom...)

I think there should be, now that there are so many different interpretations of Luceos work, at least an overview of those which are complete! Or maybe an "official" set?! Yay let's have a vote... xD

My set is completed with all the main formats, and a few extras. I designed it to be easy to make new formats that look identical to the rest of the set .

Is there a list anywhere of every format that foobar supports (including those provided by external components)? I would like to make my set as complete as possible.

I can release this soon .

Much.

here is one i've did in the style of a older set foobar had. I have different color text to try, black, or white.
They all look very nice.  The text gets a little hard to read in smaller sizes (white on orange?).

I was going to suggest looking in the foobar icons folder, and the foobar input components (http://wiki.hydrogenaudio.org/index.php?title=Foobar2000:Components_0.9#Input) wiki page; however the wiki page seems quite sparse. I would look at the other sets uploaded to ensure that you have all those covered.

Thanks for the nice compliments. I too don't like the white text with orange background but that is somewhat like the older ones had. I changed the text color to black. As for it being hard to read(the text at smaller sizes) feel free to point me to a better font. I have re-fixed the previous icon, as well as added a new one.

Here is a size chart. The new white glare lines I had added before my inital scale tests seems to look a bit weird scaled down, so I might have to remove that. I think it still looks good tho
(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v326/keikonium/sizechart.png)

And here is a playlist file:

Also, here is a flipped gradient bottom... I am kinda liking it more since it looks caved in compared to the bubble look previously:

Nice idea Keiko. The lines look great in big sizes but when scaled down, they loose their effect.. Perhaps you should make them more visible on smaller sizes, and try to make the borders sharper in the real release (atm smaller sizes look blurry). Otherwise nice work

Oh, i guess I'll post the links for MY final release here too.
not much improvements.. tried to make text more readable in some places.

...

I think you should put that glare lines away, it really looks not that good scaled down... and what ingver already said, that the borders look rather blurry right now.
I had hoped for a size chart of the playlist icon as well, because of the "text lines" which I thought were too thick on luceos release, especially scaled down. (they became one big blurry something...)
well, so much of my critique

+1 for Inverted gradient!
Title: New Foobar Logo
Post by: Keikonium on 2008-08-01 00:03:21
Oh the text lines are black on sizes 256x256 to 48x48. Then 32x32 they are more grey. And on 16x16 there are none. I fixed the line blurriness problem. I had to much transparency surrounding the icon when I scaled it down, and removing that transparency made a much crisper image.

I'll see if I can do something about the glare lines. Maybe make them more transparent as the icon gets smaller, and not have them at all on the smaller icons (48x48 and below?). I'll play around a bit and try and make everything as crisp as possible.

sry, dunno if I misunderstood you with 'glare lines'... do you mean those vertical white lines which are inside and outside of the border? good to see on the .pls
this was what I meant, they are misplaced imho... well I'm too picky I think ^^
I think I'll wait and see...

and the size of the aliencat in the 16x16 is quite better than previous attempts.

Oh and your 16x16 icon should definitely have borders since otherwise it might not be so visible on certain backgrounds. Also, make it a bit wider since it appears too thin compared to bigger sizes (increase width).
Overall your icons do look a bit wider than other "interpretations" (mine included) but that's just as well since some file type names can take a lot of room.
But the colors in FLAC icon - orange and white. I think there should be more different colors. the orange looks kind of boring when it's covered with transparent white gradients... perhaps add a bit more yellow(for example a yellow inner glow with the border.. or make gradients yellow-ish. I'm not sure how it will look but its definitely worth a try

Ah ha sorry, yes I am done . I don't have a preview of it now, but it closely resembles my last preview. Hopefully it will satisfy everyone since I probably won't be making many, if any, changes to it. The PSD will be included however for those who want to tweak it.

But right now I am currently in the process of backing up all my stuff (it's actually burning right now ) since I am switching over to vista. So once my whole switch is complete, and everything is reinstalled, and I'm back to business, I shall post the set . Sorry to keep you guys waiting a week longer than expected >.<.

What i don't like:

I can't see the lines in the icons that were so visible in your mockups and the top white gradient is too white.. It makes white cats indistinguishable (the shadow doesn't look good at all) and the overall feel is too bright with too much contrast. Especially in 16x16 icons.

I understand that you wanted to add some more effects to make the icons more polished but i think you overdid it

The generic icon colors look dull. at least in smaller sizes.

Where are the playlist icons?(I actually don't care but I'd like to see how u make paper sheets )

Some colors in your icons are kinda dull compared to the frog icon. (btw, rename frog.ico to ofr.ico)
You should make the gradients and colors more consistent. Currently they vary in size and brightness/contrast (Compare flac and wma icon, for example)

Suggestions for improvement:

Make the gradient a little darker and the glare/lines more visible... just a little.
EDIT: something like that. and keep it consistent throughout the set
(http://www.rv.pri.ee/example.png)

the 16x16 icons need some work, again with the white gradient, because the white cat faces are hard see

What i do like:

Actually the lines look quite good, if the white shiny gradient wasn't so overwhelming. i like what you've done to them. A bit more color and less white and they'd look much better

The text is readable - always a good thing and the metallic look that you've achieved in some icons (m4a) looks great.

You have made the 16x16 icons, some people still try to simply scale them.

Your icons are already usable and of course you don't have to do as I suggest. I still prefer mine (mainly cause of the 16x16 icons that don't look so good in your set), but your stuff is more stylish.

Great work! Thanks for finding the time =)

Nope. I'm currently in school, working two jobs, and getting no sleep . I haven't had much of a life for anything the past month and a half or so . I really only get about 6-8 hours of sleep every day and the occasional day off each week trying to juggle two jobs.

But if anyone wants to tweak the icons themselves in Photoshop, I can provide the .psd. Everything is labeled, and set out in a fairly easy to understand method. Once you understand how it is done, you can make and modify all the icons for all sizes in about 20 minutes (I can anyways).

If anyone is interested, I will PM you the .psd when I have a bit of time.
