How do I "install" this VU meter skin?

The skin looks like this when downloaded: (A .bin, a .vu, and some images.)



So my question is this: How do I manage to show this VU meter, like this: ?
I use a portable version of foobar if that makes a difference.

I think you will need foo_vis_vumeter component. Download it from here https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B6yNdh9XmS...dit?usp=sharing
component itself will be inside "foo_vis_vumeter_2013-02-16" archive
create foo_vis_vumeter folder inside user-components folder in your foobar installation. Unzip everything from "foo_vis_vumeter_2013-02-16.zip" archive to it. Copy your .bin file to this folder too. After that you should be able to add ui element "VU meter" inside foobar and choose your skin

Thanks. I did exactly as you said, but how am I supposed to change the skin? Nothing different when right clicking on the VU Meter.

Not sure why, sorry. It works for me even with the same skin. I just copied "Blue Sea.bin" to "foobar2000/user-components/foo_vis_vumeter" folder and skin became available in right click menu

Your help is appreciated either way. But how weird... I have now the following files placed like this:

Inside foobar2000\components\foo_vis_vumeter:
7inch_3.bin
foo_vis_vumeter.dll
Model 702 (2).bin
VUMeter.js
VUMeter.txt

I have no "user-components" folder, but I have a "components" folder instead. My "components" folder is where I place all my other plugins, like foo_uie_esplaylist.dll (EsPlaylist) for example, so this folder should be the right one I suppose.

Am I missing something? does your "foo_vis_vumeter" folder look exactly like mine?

No..You didn't install this correctly..
You must have ''user-components'' for portable install.

Reinstall this component..
File>preferences>right click on foo_vis_vumeter.dll> remove. Delete all related to this component, from configuration folder and components folder..
Open Foobar.. In: file>preferences>components , click on ''Install'' button.
Find: ''foo_vis_vumeter.dll''.
(if you don't see: ''foo_vis_vumeter.dll'', in ''file name''  type: *.* , then ''open'')
Click apply>ok. And install this component again.

Then go to: ''foobar profile folder''>user-components>foo_vis_vumeter'' and put ''bin'' files in this folder.
Then right click on Vu Meter and choose skin...

To simplify it all I figured I'll just download a completely new portable foobar. But I still have no ''user-components" folder. This "'user-components" folder should be placed directly under the path to the portable foobar right?

This is folder in main directory ex. ''foobar2000\user-components''

When you install any other component that is not foobar default component, then foobar create this folder.
You can't just move some component in foobar2000\components folder and expect that this component work properly.
This is not installation..
You must install component with install button..
So just do what i'm telling you:

Go to: file>preferences>components , click on ''Install'' button.
Find: ''foo_vis_vumeter.dll''.
Click apply>ok. And install this component.
Then you will have folder ''user-components''.
Then go to: ''foobar2000\user-components\foo_vis_vumeter'' folder, in that folder put ''bin'' files.
That's all you have to do..

You can install the component with the help of foobar2000. Just open the "Components" page in the "Preferences" window. Now you have two options: (1) Drag the foo_vis_vumeter ZIP file onto the components list. (2) Click the "Install..." button and select the foo_vis_vumeter ZIP file. In both cases foobar2000 will tell you it needs to restart. Click OK and foobar2000 will put the contents of the ZIP file in the proper location.

Thanks to both of you. I think I got a hold of it now, but I still get no right click menu that lets me change the skin.

I reset foobar like it asked me to. Then I placed my .bin in user-components\foo_vis_vumeter, right beside foo_vis_vumeter.dll that'a also there. Then I reset foobar once again to be on the safe side. According to Preferences I think UV Meter is correctly installed. But when I right click on a UV Meter control there is no menu that lets me change the skin...

The usual main menu (File, Edit, View...)? Yes.
"VU Meter version 2013-02-16" it says in the Preferences.

You have not by chance confused VU meter with Analog VU meter when you placed the component in your layout?

Choose Replace UI Element... (shown on your screenshot) and then choose Analog VU Meter in the Playback Visualization section.

Oh sorry! I missed that there was an Analog VU Meter like you said! Now I got it to work correctly. 

Thanks for all your help, people. Now I've learned how to install components too. I never realized there was a difference to placing dll's in "components" folder.

You may find it necessary to adjust rise time and preamplification (the sensitivity of the meter).
E.g. Rise time = 0.02 second and preamp = -3 dB (x2).

fb2k main menu: File -> Preferences -> Advanced -> Display -> VU Meter -> (...)

Note: Here the Analog VU Meter is called VU Meter and not Analog VU Meter. Sigh.

Thanks for the advance. I think I'll set this differently at least.

But another question... Can I for example change the background color of a meter skin? I taught that with these files:

Maybe I can modify back.png, create a new .bin file, and use that one instead? Is that possible?

Oh, Ok. I've tried making some skins today, but I don't fully understand how the needle works...

Say that I have a meter from 0 - 100%. like this:

When there is nothing playing, I want the needle to be at 0, and when the volume is really loud I want the needle to be at 100. Everything in between should work as well too, naturally.

0 doesn't seem to be when everything is quiet according to my experiments... So what range is best to use? And what's the difference between the "Interpolations"?

Excuse my noob questions, I've never worked with VU Meters before =).

EDIT: Also... What is that called that sometimes goes from -20 to +3? And what is that called that sometimes goes from 0.001 - 200? Is some of them Watt? Ampere? Volt? Ohm?

It's hard to say how this Vu should work..
Your VU from picture probably goes from -20db up to +10db = 100(from picture).
-20 is 0.

But it's hard to say how to set, because it use 0, 20,40,60,80,100 in picture..
You need to set approximately..

Mostly.. You move needle to be at 0 - from menu select -20,
then move needle to be at -5 - from menu select -5,
move needle to be at 0 and -from menu select 0,
move needle to be at +5 and -from menu select +5,
..and so on..


Is best that you set range between -20 to +10, because most songs rearly goes up..

I see. Yes I noticed that most meters goes from -20 to like +3. And I figured out how to make it work in the program now, thanks.

But what does these numbers actually represent? Some says that it is decibels, but how can it be decibels when it goes under 0, and when 0 is when the sound starts to "go badly"? 0 decibels is normally all quiet...

Oh, I see. Well, I got it to work as I wanted, so thanks for all your help people.
