Title: Looking for a way / software to help prepare album booklet scans
Post by: dpr on 2023-02-22 21:43:12

I am looking a way or software to trim/crop scans of booklets to be 'good'. I have scans of the booklets from various CDs. There are multiple jpgs, one for each page or pair of pages from the booklet. When I move from one file to the next, there can be some visual 'jolts'. This is because

- the images aren't the exact same size
- the distance from the text to the edge of the image in the file (the margin) is different

So, I'm looking for some way to crop or trim a set of images to be 'good':
- same size
- same margin

Thanks for any ideas other than doing it manually which is very time consuming and impossible to get right!

I've not done exactly this, but plenty of other things similar, and no I've not found anything better than manual editing.

It might be possible to use image recognition to extract the coordinates of the corners of a presumed rectangle, and then it would be possible to use those extracted metrics to automatically rotate, crop, and scale to a uniform size, but that relies on the standard to which the corner coordinates can be extracted in the first place.  High contrast with the background is good, but not always available.

iOS > Notes > New Note > Camera > Scan Documents goes a long way towards this, but still requires manual intervention at times.  Once the scans are in a note, they can be extracted to camera roll and exported elsewhere.  Whether this is quicker than grabbing quick scans/photos without intervention and then tidying up manually afterwards is debatable.

You may want to try VueScan.

What does that bring to the party?  Their website is short on detail.

Take a look at ScanTailor (https://github.com/4lex4/scantailor-advanced), it may be able to help with alignment and cropping.

I've used BatchCrop (https://batchcrop.com/) to automate the cropping to some extent. But it's not 100% and it sometimes requires manual tweaking.

No "one" software can do it because of software proprietary.
It's a long process between scanner - photo editor - Pdf software.

It totally sucks.
