Title: Any .mka players for Android?
Post by: Wildbill_h on 2012-07-09 16:33:17
Hi, all.

I was wondering if there is an .mka player out there for Android, because I love how Matroska works on Foobar (especially the gapless chapter separation part). I tried some other gapless players, but I always hear gaps.

Do you know any kind of player (no matter how primitive it looks) which can play .mka on Android?

Thank you very much.

P. S.: I've been trying MX Player lately and it's great, but I can't see the chapters.

I will acquire my 1st Android device in a couple of months. So I have no hands-on experience with the different players available.

That being said. I think the new VLC port is worth checking out (still early beta):

Link to the git repo is here for those who are interested in the source code:

I don't think Poweramp (http://powerampapp.com/) supports Matroska, but it does play most codecs (including MP3) gaplessly, if that's what you're trying to get to.

Yeah, I got Poweramp a while ago, but the gapless function doesn't work properly. I mean, it's great for mp3 files (which usually have HUGE gaps) but sometimes rhythm overlaps, which is kind of annoying.

I wish I could get VLC, even a beta version. However, my device is not compatible with it for the moment.

If you're planning to get an Android, make sure you get the latest version of it. I have "gingerbread", and I get compatibility problems all the time.

Thats probably not a gingerbread thing, since thats basically what everything is designed for.  Newer Android versions are just starting to ship in larger numbers.

If it's a bug, you should report it. Poweramp is perfectly gapless on the two phones I owned, the Samsung Galaxy S and Galaxy Nexus.

Well, maybe it's a buffering issue, but sometimes it works perfect and some other times it doesn't work at all. But anyway, a huge amount of my music is ripped to mka. To be honest, I don't want to spend the next months ripping my music again to mp3 (because I'm traveling to Denmark for a fairly long time).

You don't need to rerip.  You can just unpack the mka to whatever its native format is (mp3, vorbis, etc.).

I don't have that problem with either LAME MP3s, AAC, Vorbis or Musepack. You're sure your files are encoded properly? I don't know about its maturity, but you could also give rockbox for Android a shot.

As far as I can tell the Matroska encapsulation of vorbis (at least) destroys the exact length information and I've not found any tools that preserve the length.  Is foobar2000 doing something smart here that other software should be nagged to do?

Putting it into MKA results in broken gapless?  The definitely should not happen.

Have you tried Rockbox port for Android (it's a sw player, not a fw)?
On the bottom there are nightly builds for different screen resolutions.
