Best tagger for me.
Stylish interface and almost all features i need.
Don't even want to think about something else
Just try it if you haven't used it before...though it's a matter of taste.

Testing Tagscanner 4.9 build 490 dev alpha 5

works great, but....

When I use the %U,%F or %D in the TAG processor section, the names are shown in the dosformat (8 characters).
The results are written to the tags too.

And on the subject, could there be a clear all fields option on that screen?

thanks, great tagger

I've got mp3's that have some text in the comment field and for the life of me can't get rid of it. Here's the text...

YRIGHT = 1994 YEAR: 1994

Look like some kind of corruption. I've tried removing tags, editing tags, can't get rid of it. I had it in 3 mp3's and did manage to get rid of it in 2 of them. How I don't know.

I'm using alpha 6 btw.

Firstly, I want to say how great this tagger is  - it just gets better and better.

One thing I'd like to see though - would it be possible to add an option to write an image to the ID3v2 tag in the 'TAG Processor' - that way all files from an album could be tagged with the same image at the same time. I'd love it if this could be done.

Cheers

Wonderful program, very useful ... it makes me save a lot of time dealing with tags and file names ....
THANK YOU VERY MUCH!!!!

A little bug ... with build 6 I tried to remove a track number with Tag Editor, but I couldn't .... I tried both save and autosave, but track was still there ...

In "Music renamer" first format is "%7. %1 - %2" instead "%7 - %1 - %2": is it wanted? If so, can you also add "%7 - %1 - %2"?

Can I suggest two little features?
1. could you make List maker pane customizabile so that is possible to choose which columns view in the pane?
For example I'd like to see immediately also birtate of each file ....

2. could add Rescan button to List maker please?

Thanks

Claudio

Another little bug of "Dev alpha 6".

In "LIST MAKER" I changed field order to produce an Excel list.
After closing and reopening the program, this setting has been lost.

(in other words something like the web-based search at the freedb.org site http://freedb.org/freedb_search.php (http://freedb.org/freedb_search.php) )

Thanks.

But I couldn't find anywhere on the control panel nor there was any guides as to how to uninstall this program from the official webpage.

is it hard to implement new token:
%ENCODER ?
so, eg one could place encoder name in the comment field of id3tag

as base, you can use EncSpotConsole code.

i've ported it to Linux (this took about halfanhour - including make skeleton :) and i hope this feature (encoder-name2comment) will be done soon through the set of scripts. but i think this could be useful also for windows users

Does anyone ever get those tags that just don't seem to be able to edit? Example. I have a CD where I am trying to get rid of the comment field and can only do it to some of the songs. Go into tag editor, clear the field and save it, go back and it's still there, grrr.

I've tried everything, removed tags, changed tags, etc... just can't get rid of the comment. It's frustrating.

Can you add translit convertion task in TAG processor mode? (to convert cyrilic ID3-tag info translit, for mp3 players, that don't support cyrilic letters)

I have been using your program for 2 or 3 years, probably as long as you have had it out there, and definately longer than you have been posting updates to hydrogenaudio (glad you finally came around here  ).  Well, here is a bug/non-feature I have found in the program.  There is no ability to case change files without tags.  I tried %N as the format, and as I figured, this doesn't work along with the Case change feature, because it outputs the Old Filename.  Would it be possible to leave the %N usage as-is (because it can be used for data retention), and instead make available an option to use the Case change features on Filenames themselves?  Obviously, "Only first up in block" in this case would be altered to "Only first up per word".

Hi,

Question for the user group:

I imagine that like most of you, not every one of my MP3 files is named 100% perfectly.  E.g., some of them are:

Artist - Song.mp3

Some are namee:

Artist - Album - Song.mp3

etc.  You get the point.

My question to all of you is:  Is there a way to get the TAG Processor to handle both of these situations at the same time?  Or do I have to physically separate the files?  I've tried using %2 and %3 in the various fields, but in one case %2 is the album name, and in the other it is the Song name.  I'm stuck doing it manually.

Any assistance is appreciated.

Thanks,
Fb

Both tag.exe & foobar tell me that lyrics (created with TagScanner) are out of sync.

An option copy (non locked) tags to all files would be good

I just started playing with TagScanner today. Good looking program...similar to Tag & Rename w/ less clutter. One thing I think it's needs is 2 methods of inputting files...the current whole directory (& subdir's if checked) method AND an Open dialog box where you can select only certain files to edit BEFORE they are scanned. I store files purely by extension (ie s:\ogg, s:\flac, etc). The ogg dir has several thousand files in it, and scanning it each time is cumbersome (TS does it faster than T&R...but still). Bringing in only the files you want cuts down on potential mistakes and so forth. T&R has checkboxes by the filename as does Tagger, so it's very clear what files your actually editing. I'm still learning the prog so I may have missed something, but 2 input modes would give TS a leg up. Nice work so far.

Hi Tarantul,

I just downloaded the latest version of tagscanner (4.9B3) and I'm speechless, it's amazing, the only problem that I encountered is that I cannot see the ID3v1 an ID3v2 in some mp3 that I can see without problem with any other tag editor. Maybe is a bug, could I send you an mp3 sample (1MB) by email?

Thanks in advance

Thanks a lot for this great program! I tried many taggers and TagScanner is my ONLY choice (already for a couple of years, I think). It's amazing it gets even better with every version! And copying/pasting tags for multiple files is just killing feature!

And now...

Bug?:
- TAG Editor: string "<varies/unchanged>" is not shown (in the fields where it should), especially when ID3v1 tag version is seleted and when using Ctrl+A to select all files. But it always shows up after switching tag versions.

Question:
- Unicode?: Can I somehow enter western characters with accents, umlauts etc.? The font TagScanner uses is cyrillic in my system, so I only get cyrillic letters instead.

Feature requests (growing in difficulty, I think ;-):
1) Shell integration: it would be great to have an ability to open mp3-folders from the shell's context menu.
2) Multiline tags editing: a separate window for editing such multiline tags (COMMENT, LYRICS) would bring much more comfort (maybe with controls to go to the next/previous files).
3) Find & Replace text in tags: let's say, I have a CD with a large number of tracks and I want to fill COMMENT field, which is the same almost for all files except for a few that must have another comments (for example, recording dates). First, I feed all files with one comment, and then I change it for that exceptional files. It's OK, but if made a mistake at the first step or changed my mind, I have to do everything once more, and that can be time consuming. Unless we have Find & Replace feature, of course ;-)

edit: Also I use the preview in TAG processor with resetted fields to have an overview of my tagging done so far. Here is two suggestions how to make it easier:
1) column autoresizing (after double-clicking column's border) and
2) floating tips (or hints? - sorry, I can't remember how to name it right  for fields not fitting the column's width and especially for miltiline COMMENT field.

Hi Tarantul,

This program just gets better and better. Two things though

1) Has the AutoSave of Tags in TAG Editor been removed? If so, why? It takes much longer to edit if I have to press Save for each file.

2) Would it possible to add a column in the TAG Editor which shows whether the TAG contains an image or not? Would make it much easier for me to figure out which files need their tags checking.

Thanks for the great work

If I'm using the new beta correctly, it appears I have two choices when tagging my music:

1)  Tag with ID3v1 or ID3v2 or APE
2)  Check the "All Tags" option and tag each file with all 3 tags

What if I want to use ID3v1 and ID3v2 but not APE?  Or any other combination of 2 tags?  Do I just perform option #1 above twice, or is there a 1-step solution to this?

AFAIK, in TAG editor you can only copy ID3v1 -> ID3v2 or ID3v1 -> APE (or to both if 'All tags' checked): just select files and press Save.

With TAG processor you can copy tags (see Task field) in following directions:
ID3v1 -> ID3v2
ID3v2 -> ID3v1
ID3v2 -> APE

...or you can generate them  - it is done for each version of TAG separately, but it's a matter of 2 buttons (select different TAG and press Generate).

Anyway, I agree that two checkboxes for two other tag versions would be better than 'All tags' checkbox.
And maybe tags copying APE -> ID3v2 would be useful for somebody.

Yes, CTRL+A not worked in current build.

You can't use Unicode in tags, but you can write accents, umlauts etc. if you setup your system local to needeв language.

1) Maybe.
2) Why? Fileds for Comment and Lyrics already multilined.
3) I want то built in word replacer with various setting, but have no time for this module at this time

I think spib's "AutoSave" of Tags in TAG Editor means...
after click save button, focus must be placed at next file.
There are this function in previous version. New version is uncomfortable at this point.

when using the tag editor for tagging mp3 files, is it possible to add a tag all items tab instead of clicking on [save] X amount of times to tag a whole folder. That would be a cool function let me know if it can be done thanks always phraze. By the way this is the best app for making a list, as well as tagging mass amounts of mp3s, with the exception of clicking save a thousand times to get the whole job done.

Is there anyway to do this in TagScanner, the latest beta?

Is there a substitute to %1 or %E that will insert a track number, starting at #1, and increment it for each song.  So you can take a folder full of random mp3 files and make their filenames and track titles something like this
01 - song a
02 - song b

Even better, can i control what number it starts on?

thanx in advnce

Is there a possiblity that you could add a quality switch to the music renamer part

By Quality i mean

For mp3
Artist - Title [VBR 238].mp3
or
Artist - Title [CBR 192].mp3

For Mpc
Artist - Title [Extreme].mpc

etc

it makes it easier to organise my music through windows explorer

TagScanner has it's uninstaller, but it seems that some beta versions had not.
AFAIK it doesn't use the windows registry and resides only in its folder in Program Files.
So if you cannot uninstall it via Start Menu or Add/Remove Programs, you can safely remove TS's folder before installing new version.

Its nice to see so rapid development of my favorite tagger. Many
thanks, Sergey.

There was a very important feature for me all the time. All taggers what i know does not support this. Feature is kind of "Power tag synchronisation". Some files have useful information in their ID3v1, but ID3v2 contains a garbage like "Track 01", "Unknown artist" etc. Some files have tracknumber in ID3v1 but have not it in ID3v2 at all. Some have wrong tracknumber in id3v2 (e.g. 32 or 0) and correct in ID3v1. Some files have info in filename different than in tags.

The solution (the large the number the harder to implement):

#1 in tag editor mark (other color or special symbol) for files in which tag differs considerably (if one of ID3v1 fields is not a subset of corresponding ID3v2 field, or there is less than N equal symbols at the beginning of two fields)

#2Make TagSync mode, which will look for and show only such problematic files and files with names, that do not correspond choosed by user namind scheme(File names often contains more useful infos than tags).

#3=#2+ Using special complex algos for finding the lenght of largest common part of two fields in different tags (www.algolist.manual.ru).

Could you please make something like this?

I've just switched to 4.9 RC3 from 4.8 and two things immediately bothered me:

1) Drop-down list for Tag version instead of tabs
  (so now instead with one click I need three moves to select Tag version that will be displayed)

2) Scroll down list for Main, Extended, Lyrics and Image sections of IDv2
  (also instead one click I need to scroll for every tag to see if it has eg Image in it. And it doesn't support mouse wheel and it doesn't scroll while dragging but jumps after releasing scrollbar)

Also old bug stayed that when ID1 exists and IDv2 doesn't, contents of IDv1 are shown in both, so there's no way of determining whether IDv2 really exists but to use other tag editing application...

never the less this app kicks As$, beats all non-free tag editors out-there!

For ID3v2 used UTF16. You may convert all files at once by selecting in Tag editor (<varies/unchanged> in all fields) and clicking Save button.

A user of the program asked me if she should install the new version over an old version of the program, or if she needs to uninstall first. (I made the Spanish translation several months ago, that´s why she asked me).
I´d try by myself but can´t because a lack of internet connection at home and no CD-RW drive around here. Plus my floppy drive died, can you believe my luck?.

Thanks for your answer.

Post by: AudioBeans on 2005-03-13 18:58:38
I am trying to use TagScanner 4.9 build 495a beta to edit some FLAC tags without having much success.  I am doing the following:

- Launch TagScanner 4.9
- Select Tag Editor tab
- Browse -> Select one album's worth of files
- Select All
- Edit Genre Category
- Save

The status bar indicates that TagScanner is "processing" all of the files and then shows a "Done".  Despite this, the "Genre" category in the TagScanner window remains unchanged (not to mention the files themselves).

My directory is *not* read-only and I have permission to write to these files.  Any idea what's causing this?

Up top, the settings are "Ape" and "Auto".

Thanks!

Good news!

I used to use tagSacnner v4.7 when i hadn't personnal connection... Very nice tool...
I've replaced it by foobar and his freeDB component when i gen internet at home... but since i gave up my conenction i'll come back to TagScanner (v4.9) now: for sure it's more ergonomic than the actual foobar2k masstagger... (very powerful thought)

Who knows maybe i'll return to foobar for offline batchtagging with soon v0.9 of peter player...

Hi,

I've found that TagScanner Build 495c have a problem - it erase some information that foobar2000 write into the file.

Here's my MP3 information shown in foobar2000's 'technical info':

Before

bitrate = 160
codec = MP3
channels = 2
samplerate = 44100
mp3_stereo_mode = stereo
replaygain_track_gain = -0.72 dB
replaygain_track_peak = 0.682060
----------
10041455 samples @ 44100Hz
File size: 4 550 926 bytes

After

bitrate = 160
codec = MP3
channels = 2
samplerate = 44100
mp3_stereo_mode = stereo
----------
10041455 samples @ 44100Hz
File size: 4 550 850 bytes

I want to preserve the ReplayGain Info, any workaround or need to wait for next version?

Thanks.

Rgds,
Johnson Lam.

Apparently the deletion of replaygain tags bug is back.

I have mp3 files with ID3v2 and replaygain tags (I think those are APE tags). When rewriting/adding ID3v2 tags it kills the replaygain tags.

I also noted that user defined ID3v2 tags are deleted during rewrite. The program also writes a tag called "contentgroup" that was not in the original files. Is this intended behaviour?

Unfortunately these problems are preventing me from using the software.

I'm using v4.9 build 497

Do not delete APEv2 tags if you want to keep replaygain information.

Program never! delete non-editible ID3v2 frames.

Really, program write to TIT1 genre value for compatibility with some players and catalogers.

I've noticed that pictures (cd covers...) in id3v2 are removed when you edit several files in the "tag editor" section, or sometimes all the pictures are replaced by a single picture (the picture in the tag of the file you last click on in fact).
Maybe what I'm doing is wrong?
BTW what it the button "lock" ?

This is really a great software package.  Thanks for making it available ... and for being so quick with the updates.  Not only is the interface intuitive and easy-to-use, but it's well-designed and very lightweight in terms of required resources -- it doesn't slow my system to a crawl like so many other windows-based apps these days.

My music is split in a number of directories and often along with TagScanner I also
have an Explorer window open to see files I need to work with.

I'd like to have the possibility to copy and paste the folder's path to the folder in the "Browse..." dialog box to select the working directory....

Thanks

A shame that 99% of the sites out there are too cheap to mirror files on their own.

I found a bug that is really unpleasant.
When trying to save mp3 tags in Japanese I find that it writes correctly to ID3 v1, but for ID3 v2 its totally screwed up.

Another problem I have found is usoing freedb to retrieve information for albums with Japanese titles, all the information that is in Japanese shows up as ???? and also write as  ???.

Ooooo WindowsMedia metadata editinggggg.... *drools*

I'm looking forward to that

And also it looked better... yumm...

One thing I really like is its clear showing of what tags are in the file, and to quickly copy from one tag format to another. The drawback was, you can't do this selectively. E.g. 40 MP3's, 39 with APEv2 tags, and 1 with ID3v2 tags, if you copy APEv2 to Complete, then that 1 file will lose all its tags.

I don't know if that's been fixed... we'll see.

Pozdrawiam

Hi

Im using TagScanner 4.9 and Creatives Organizer software.

My tags (in Tagscanner) are ID3V1 ID3V2 APE

However when I view the same mp3s in the Creative Organizer it displays them differently.

(for example I changed the name of one artist and its 'PW' in tagscanner but something else in the Organizer.

Any ideas?

thanks!

Maybe Creative Organizer can't read some tags (i.e. APE) ?

Long time lurker first time poster.

Love TagScanner, Wonderful Program!

I too have Tagscanner starting in the bottom right corner.

Would it be possible to add a "Select All" option in the right click menu?
This would be helpful when doing a whole album request in Tag Processor.

I feel like the world's biggest idiot.

I've been using MusicMatch Jukebox to edit my MP3 tags. It is very fast and easy to use, with simple buttons for common processes, such as generating tags from filenames.

(http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y71/teh-roxxors/MMJBTagEditor.jpg)

Now I can't figure out how to do anything with tagscanner. Can't even figure out how to generate tags from the filenames. Can't seem to edit or create a tag for any MP3. I'm at a complete loss for what the various screens are used for.

(http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y71/teh-roxxors/tagscannertageditor.jpg)

If the developer has a little free time, maybe he can write some kind of manual, or just jot down instructions for some of the more common tasks, such as generating tags from file names, editing tags, and saving changes.

There. I've admitted to being an idiot. Let the healing being.

Ahem. Actually, I've figured out this much:

(http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y71/teh-roxxors/tagscannertagprocessorsettings.jpg)

(http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y71/teh-roxxors/tagscannertagprocessorgeneratetag.jpg)

(http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y71/teh-roxxors/tagscanneraddingpicture.jpg)

What I'm wondering now is if there is an easy way of getting the songs numbered, perhaps by their position in the playlist?

Here's the hex dump of an .m4a file tagged by iTunes
(http://images6.theimagehosting.com/Untitled-1.90b.gif)
As you can see the genre is not given as a text string but rather a numerical value, just like in ID3v1 (the file is tagged as 'Rock'). It'd be great if you could add support for this.

Thanks a lot Tarantul, you did an amazing work on v5, just wondering if you could consider:
* Add drag & drop support
* Batch rename for folders (including subfolders) according to the tag info of the files inside each folder (a very useful feature for those who want to classified the music for example by artist, album, genre... in explorer)
* An option to set the format of the autonumbering (ie: 1, 01 or 01/xx)

Hello, I looked at your program and it is very interesting, however I am missing one feature. I used (since now ID3V2.4 support is compliant but broken in foobar2000) to tag files according to their filenames but using a "pattern". The way you set it up makes it impossible for me to correctly tag my files. Let's say I have a file called:
09 Disturbed - Down With The Sickness.mp3
And since this album is from a movie, its various artists so for ipod compatibility and usability, I write the movie name in the artist field. so we actually have %tracknumber% %title%  I am unable to do it because if I set the separator to space, I will have to reconstruct the sentence (and this is not possible either). I'm on 5.0 latest beta, build 505.

Thanks for your work Sergey!

TagScanner is still having problems gettings Japanese characters off of freedb. (Unicode I believe)
Anything with Japanese titles or artists etc. seems to have character missing or blocks instead. I find myself having to find the disc on freedb and manually having  to copy and paste it from the site. >_<

Post by: MellowB on 2006-08-24 14:04:00
Ok, hey there folks.
I'm also a long-time user of TagScanner and i really like it a lot.
Esp. the new version 5 beta's are a huge step into the right direction.
I just wanted to say thanks for the great work there Tarantul and also wanted to request a small change/feature.

Well, i use foobar2000 to listen to my music. Most of my music tho is asian one may it be Japanese or Korean.
Unicode support in TagScanner is now flawless and also with old versions using Applocale and no unicode i always had great results with tagging my MP3s.
But tho there is still one problem. I like to keep my music with 2 different tags. First is ID3v2 tags with Unicode Japanese or Korean, ID3v1 tags are in romaji - thus a "readable" version for westerners.
The problem now is that TagScanner writes the ID3v2 tags as ID3v2.3 tags (if there were no ID3v2.4 tags before) and when now foobar opens these MP3s it gets a bit confused. Since there are also ID3v1 tags it loads rather the ID3v1 tags for lines that do NOT go over the char-limit in the ID3v1 tags. If some lines are longer that the limit of ID3v1 it loads the ID3v2.3 tag for those. So this looks kinda weird in foobar, some songs have the correct Kanji/Japanese names like i want them to show in my foobar, others have the romaji/western writing.
If i tag the files with ID3v2.4 tags foobar will always load the ID3v2 tag and ignore the v1 one even tho it is still there for players like WinAMP 2.9x or such.

So my request is now, could you add an option to make TagScanner explicitly write ID3v2.4 tags?
So that we can not only choose between ID3v1 and v2 but also choose WHICH v2 standard should be used.
That would be a great addition i'd say and really help at least me a lot.

So thanks again for this great program and i hope you can think about my request. ^^

Hey Tarantul!

I've been using your nice little program for quite some time now, well over two years I think.
It's really outstanding work and has helped my a lot!

Now, with version 5 arriving, I was really excited to see what's got updated/improved and was very easger to try it out.
I must say, I do like the new design.
At first, it was a bit strange accomodating but now I find it more ordered than the old one.

Anyway, I think I encountered a bug...
Ususally (with version 4.9), when when integrating the album cover art into the MP3 file, my MP3 player (or rather the organizing software) - a Rio Karma - had no problems indexing those files.

Now, with 5.0, files I have tagged with an album cover in JPEG format and ~ 300x300 pixels file dimensions do no longer show up in the indexing list of the organizing software leading me to believe those files are somehow "broken".
The indexing software is reading out the ID3 tags, and as I said, it worked perfectly fine with images in 4.9 but no longer in 5.0.

My question is therefore:
Did you change anything regarding the image tagging bahaviour in 5.0 and if so could you image this may have broken the ID3 tag and/or the file header somehow?

Also, is there any chance getting in back to how it worked in 4.9 or will I have to do without images in the future?

Thank you again for this simply outstanding program and for taking your time to (hopefully) answer and solve my problem

Best regards,

Helmi

Hello, Tarantul

First of all, I've been using TagScanner for a long time now, and its excellent.
But, there's one feature I'd like to ask you to implement, if it is possible, in the next version.

The ability to create some filter for Moving the files, like:

If there's less than 4 files of the artist, move it to one folder.
If not, move to another one.

That would be very usefull, and I couldnt find any program that does it.

I hope you like my suggestion, and thanks for this amazing program.

Thank you,

SN

Не работает получение тегов из FreeDB если находишься за корпоративным прокси с авторизацией (прокси ISA 2004)
+
При генерации тегов из имени файла было бы удобнее обрабатывать файлы по маске (например: "%7. %1 - %2" для "01. Queen - We Will Rock You")

-----------------------

Reception tags from FreeDB does not work if are behind a corporate proxy with authorization (proxy ISA 2004)

At generation tags from a name of a file it would be more convenient to process files on a mask (for example: "%7. %1 - %2 " for " 01. Queen - We Will Rock You ")

Hi, i'm using Tagscanner v5 build 508 and I notice a couple of annoying behaviors in this new version:

If I remove a tag in "tag editor" the changes are not displayed (fields are not blanked), so it's necesary to rescan the directory to see that the tags has been removed, would be nice if v5 could have the same behavior of v4.9 and refresh the files after remove tags.

I found too that at difference of v4.9 tagscanner now keep the selection of files made it in one tab (for example in "tag editor") when you jump to another tab (for example "music renamer" or tag processor"). I've to tell that this is really uncomfortable since often people only works with a couple of files in "tag editor" but it's common to work with all files in "tag renamer" and "tag processor". v4.9 worked by default with all files in "tag renamer" and "tag processor" (even to preview changes) so there was no need to press select all after jump to these tabs.

Another strange thing: I've 10 tracks loaded in "music renamer", I select 1 track and then I press preview, tagscanner show a preview only of that track (ok), then I press "settings" to come back to the main windows of "music renamer" and the track appear greyed, in order to preview all tracks I press "select all" and nothing happen, so I need to make a new manual selection to get these buttons ("select all" and "deselect all") works, so I'm wondering why the track appear greyed? it's right that the buttons "select all" & "deselect all" doesn't work instantly after made a preview? are not useless in this case if previously to use it I've to make a manual selection?

I love new features in v5 but I really miss the behavior of v4.9, it assumed some things (selection or refresh) by default that it made the work easier. Hope to see these behaviors back in future versions of Tagscanner
