Title: Suggestions for "pre-assembled" foobar2k/foo_abx package?
Post by: knutinh on 2011-05-19 15:26:48
Is it possible to make a minimal-intervention package of audio files etc that will launch right into foobar2k/foo_abx in such a way that your mother will be able to install it? And so chances of "cheating" are reduced?

Only unmodified installers can be redistributed; redistribution of foobar2000 binaries in any other form is not permitted.

and you can't stop people cheating with foo_abx. besides, results on their own mean nothing. you'll only be taken seriously if other people can re-produce your findings.

Thank you for replying.

Demanding that the user installs a regular foobar2k is ok. Demanding that he finds the foo_abx.dll and drops it into the right folder is too high a threshold for my mother. Is there no fix for this that is within the license?

Is there some way to script/command-line control foobar2k into opening a given set of files directly into the ABX comparator? Hiding the regular foobar2k window?

I was not hoping to stop people from cheating, only making it a little more cumbersome.

I do believe that making these tools more accessible will further the understanding and respect for blind testing.

i don't think installing it manually is much of a stretch for someone who wants to participate in a listening test.

1) download the installer: http://www.foobar2000.org/download (http://www.foobar2000.org/download)
2) run the installer
3) download foo_abx http://www.foobar2000.org/components/view/foo_abx (http://www.foobar2000.org/components/view/foo_abx)
4) file>preferences>components>click the "install" button and browse to the saved zip file.
5) restart foobar when prompted. add 2 files to playlist. right click>can't remember the exact option as i don't have it installed.

or maybe consider a standalone ABX application? sorry i don't have any recommendations though.

You could try with a batch script
Assuming you have wget or similar, then running silent customized install - check out "foobar2000_setup.exe /?"
You only need to get sample of foobar install.ini, to know how to customize install process, then you can have your one-click custom foobar package (perhaps even portable)

I did this and it's working fine. My only problem is that i almost fell out of my chair because the volume in the ABX test is very high, is there any way to change that?
